Emmy?

[edit]

It is asserted on Degrassi Junior Highdiff that the episode It's Late (DJH episode) won an Emmy; someone should cite this fact. --Jack Merridew 11:18, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vincent Massey

[edit]

Degrassi was not filmed at Vincent Massey Collegiate Institute, regardless of what a printed resource book may say. I attended Vincent Massey during its final five years of life, and the school shown on Degrassi bore no physical resemblance whatsoever. It was filmed at Degrassi Junior Public School in Etobicoke. I'm updating the article and adding a citation, but I also want to mention it here as it seems to be a recurring misconception. Daveharr 17:38, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

BBC? Similar/same show?

[edit]

On a recent trip to the UK I was channel surfing and came across one of those "looking back to the 80's" retrospective shows. In the midst of it, a show that looked exactly like Degrassi was presented for a short period of time. All the same characters were in it, even the same hallmark fashions. However, I don't recall the name "Degrassi" being used, but something else?

So, did the BBC have their own version adapted from the Canadian one? Did they play it under a different name? Or was I simply drunk?

Article expansion

[edit]

As you may have noticed, for this past month, I've expanded this article dramatically. The citation style is not right because I copypasted from ProQuest, but this will also be fixed, and I've also overkilled citations (which will be also rectified) but this article was a sad state of affairs compared to the amount of media coverage and even scholarly analysis I was able to find. A lot of it was basically original research and had a whopping four sources. Now, the article has a similar structure to Degrassi: The Next Generation now. Hopefully this helps. Infobox and lead

[edit]
Yeah, Toronto, Ontario seems like a better option. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 00:57, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done. ToQ100gou (talk) 01:47, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The infobox genre and runtime need references per the template.
    • Sources I've already used in this article describe it as a teen drama so this is no problem (there is also the entire section where it discusses it's influence on the genre), but how would you reference the runtime? ToQ100gou (talk) 00:53, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The guidelines on the template say that the genre and runtime need sources.
On finding a source, I would look for newspaper clippings, books, TV Guides, or reviews with runtimes.
Done. ToQ100gou (talk) 07:43, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not sure "and others" is necessary. The "starring" section should mention every lead in the opening credits / link to character list.
    • The show does not contain opening cast credits, and the ending credits vary depending on the characters relevant to the episode. The starring section lists all the actors in the show who played notable characters that already have articles. I can remove that and replace it the character list if that's a problem. ToQ100gou (talk) 00:53, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If the "starring" section is not definitive then a character list link would be better. Some Dude From North Carolina (talk) 01:00, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Reception and impact

[edit]
  • See WP:RECEPTION.
    • I already have, I've been continuously trying to make the section not seem repetitive, even though in my opinion, there's only so much literary gymnastics you can do over what truly does boil down to "he said this, she said this". I don't mind suggestions. ToQ100gou (talk) 02:06, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • The last sentence in the first paragraph of #In_popular_culture needs a source.
  • Be consistent with the dmy format here too.
    • As above, fixed.
  • "it's" is a contraction between it and is. However, several sections in this article use "it's" to describe a season (ex. "it's second season") when it should be "its second season" so correct them. They can be found in "First-run broadcast", "Critical reception", and "Awards and nominations".

5x expanded by ToQ100gou (talk). Self-nominated at 12:55, 14 May 2021 (UTC).[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation

Image eligibility:

QPQ: None required.

Overall: It wasn't 5x expanded on May 14, but promoted to GA status on that date so it still qualifies for DYK. While the quote in the source talks about the production company of the show being goodwill ambassadors, other parts of the source talk about the actors meeting with similar UNICEF ambassadors in New York, so I will give it a pass. Image is not used in the article and it is licensed with some rights reserved, so I don't think its eligible for DYK per WP:DYKIMG. ToQ100gou if you want I can approve the ALT0 hook and we don't have to worry about the image. Z1720 (talk) 00:33, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review! As for the expansion date, I actually put it under the date where I began expanding it (February 14) because the expansion happened over three months, but it got shoved to May 14. I'm fine with the ALT0 hook being used: it looked like an image was required and because it was my first nomination I sort of had a brain fog there. ToQ100gou (talk) 00:40, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ALT0 approved, I struck out ALT1 so the preppers won't use it. The 5x expansion has to happen over a period of 7 days, which is probably why it got bumped to here. Z1720 (talk) 02:57, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Grade 9 & high school

[edit]

"...Grade 9, which is typically the first year of high school in Canada..."

Really? When I was growing up in Canada in the 1980s and 1990s (in PEI and Alberta), grades 7-9 were considered "junior high" and grades 10-12 were considered "senior high". I'm >20 years out of touch now and have heard anecdotally that the US-style "middle school" of grades ~6-8 and "high school" of grades 9-12 is becoming more prevalent, but I did not encounter that terminology in Canada until several years after graduating high school. Ontario (where the series is set) may also have been different than other parts of Canada at the time, but it would still surprise me if Ontario considered grade 9 to be high school at the time, since their high school went up to grade 13 during that period.

If this was in fact the standard terminology in Ontario at the time that the show aired, then I recommend that the text quoted above be changed to something like "Grade 9, which was typically considered the first year of high school in Ontario at the time...". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.227.248.191 (talk) 18:38, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

According to this:
"Also known as secondary school, high school runs from grades 9 to 12 in most Canadian provinces and territories".
Likewise, the article on the Ontario Academic Credit says: "grade 13 was replaced by OAC for students starting high school (grade 9) in 1984."
In Degrassi Junior High, the school initially did not have a Grade 9 until the producers added one in season 3 to keep everything together, and the grade 9 students were taken to an actual high school for certain classes. Likewise, at the start of Degrassi High School, there was a Grade 9, hence the "niners". I think high school in Ontario started at Grade 9 all along? ToQ100gou (talk) 01:39, 8 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
