Both articles about the Rao couple read like advertisements
[edit]I cannot comment on the veracity of the various claims made in these two articles, but it's troubling that they seem to rely on many primary sources (subjects' own websites etc.) and overall the tone is such that they read like self-aggrandising advertisements. A neutral third party with no connection to the subjects or their work needs to edit both articles to reflect a more NPOV.
Controversy
[edit]https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/fmxx7c/fake_rickson_gracie_black_belt/ Not only is there a reddit thread on this, there are also several YouTube videos, although YouTube is not necessarily a notable source. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kys85_1X0HA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyRxg9-D0YU - Intro to BS Jiu Jitsu.
I strongly feel that there should be a section on controversy.

There is no small amount of controversy regarding Mr. Deepak Rao's claimed martial arts accomplishments and rankings, as well as the veracity of other claims of his, to include claims regarding degrees in medicine, law, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BasicsOnly (talk • contribs) 23:23, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Vendetta
[edit]@King of Hearts: I would like to invite you to observe this discussion as well as the two deletion pages for Deepak Rao and Seema Rao as we had discussed this issue prior on my talk page. I want to ensure everything is above board and handled appropriately and I defer to your experience regarding matters concerning Wikipedia and the policies of the website. Thank you. V/R BasicsOnly (talk) 08:53, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
There are enough sources on news portals and official govt portal of him being an honorary officer in the Indian army. There are references of Richard Bustillo talking about him being one of only 3 people who are doing JKD right [1]
His inclusion in the Indian Army is mentioned on the official website of the Indian Army [2]
I went through the bullshido threads. Almost all of them are by the same user. Instead of filtering out content that is not acceptable here is a clear case of trying to score a personal score. Wikipedia is hardly the place for it.
In the current state, the article is not a candidate for deletion.
He is a Registered Medical Practitioner with Registration Number 59449 which can be easily verified by putting the registration number on this site https://www.mciindia.org/CMS/information-desk/indian-medical-register (talk)
- @BasicsOnly: You seem to be a man on a mission to tarnish the major's image and reputation. If it's something personal wikipedia isn't the place Ssk1720 (talk) 18:23, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Modyyash: You forgot to sign your post. Interestingly enough, out of your 79 edits on Wikipedia since 2012, 61 of them have to do with Mr. Deepak Rao. I don't think that is a coincidence. Additionally, how kind of you to provide an uncited and unreliable article. Anyone can submit anything they want to that website and claim it as fact. I hardly think that Richard Bustillo commented specifically on Mr. Rao and his family, especially after I saw those technique videos. Additionally, it's convenient for you to say that the Bullshido thread is irrelevent because there are few users commenting, when the users commenting are presenting direct claims from Mr. Deepak Rao himself and his family claiming to be a Harvard doctor, Yale Lawyer, BJJ blackbelt, etc. All fabrications. BasicsOnly (talk) 17:14, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: Check the references. Richard Bustillo Talks specifically about him https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/more-sports/others/Bruce-Lees-legacy-is-being-abused-Bustillo/articleshow/11325249.cms. I see almost all of your edits are targeted towards him (talk). Says a lot about your intentions too. Removing content that is not relevant is fine. Last we checked this was still a democratic process. And what about being an officer with the Indian Army, Medical professional, and JKD master instructor?
(talk)
- @Modyyash: Like I said prior, that news website is unreliable - anyone can submit to the article. It also has exactly zero sources. Additionally, I have personally watched Mr. Deepak Rao's instruction demonstration videos. He is not at all qualified to be teaching grappling or striking of any kind. He is also certainly not a BJJ blue belt, much less a black belt. It does seem that he gained an honorary rank of major in the Indian Army Reserves, but that is hardly noteworthy. There are hundreds if not thousands of legitimate Indian Army Majors in the Regular Army that actually earned the rank from within the Armed Forces as actual military members, and few if any of them have their own Wikipedia page. None of them have a Wikipedia page JUST BECAUSE of the rank. I checked the website you provided claiming he is a doctor - that is false. Even if that website was a reliable source (which I am not convinced of) there are 8 people with the same registration number. The Deepak Rao listed only has a MBBS from 1988 which is a 3-4 year undergraduate degree. He is not a doctor. What is your connection with Deepak Rao? BasicsOnly (talk) 17:29, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Modyyash: Also I find it very telling that I have more Wikipedia edits than you in less than a week on the site vs. your 8 years. And you are right that many of my edits are about Mr. Rao, I hate liars. He makes provably false statements and that damages the integrity of this Encyclopedia. It is beneficial for the website to uproot deliberate falsehoods and blatant self-promotion pages. BasicsOnly (talk) 17:34, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: This reference on the Indian Army website should rest the debate on being fake - https://indianarmy.nic.in/Site/FormTemplete/frmTempSimple.aspx?MnId=GRPzQ85oDzaKxwY6aRqRug==&ParentID=OcQXZUI+1Ow/pVkYdyGqzw==
This is an endorsement from the Indian Army on their official website. I mean an organization of the class of Indian Army would definitely perform thorough vetting before conferring an honour of this level.
- @BasicsOnly:Of the 91 contributions you have made to wikipedia in the last 8 days majority of them were related to either editing the pages of Major Deepak Rao , Dr Seema Rao or defending you blocked request for aggressive editing of Dr Deepak Rao's page. I think you creating an account on wikipedia had a premeditated goal to carry out a personal grudge or vendetta.
Anu231 (talk) 17:35, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: Sorry that's not the case. It is the biggest newspaper in India and it has interviewed RSB. There is no mention of BJJ on the Wiki Page. He has an honorary rank. I wonder if you are reading the references? Since independence, the Indian army has conferred honorary rank to 5 individuals. So it deserves a WIKI page. And for your reference MBBS is a valid degree and the site https://www.mciindia.org/CMS/ is an official govt site. Why are you spending all your time on one mans wiki? Is there a personal agenda here? Are you trying to state that Indian news websites, official Indian Army website, a list of all doctors in India with registration numbers on the official site are all unreliable? I hope not. This then is a deeper issue of hatred Modyyash(talk)
- @Anu231: How great of you to join us. You have had an account on Wikipedia since January 2019. You have 23 Edits in the last 5 months. Of these 23 Edits 19 of them are about Mr. [Deepak Rao]] and his family. The sum total of your other edits is just +840 bytes. I have many edits concerning Mr. Deepak Rao because most of his article is a fabrication. Additionally, I have passed 100 edits, but I suppose you were close enough. I have not doubted Mr. Rao's honorary rank of major in the Indian Army Reserves. It is just not important. As I said before it is hardly noteworthy. There are hundreds if not thousands of legitimate Indian Army Majors in the Regular Army that actually earned the rank from within the Armed Forces as actual military members, and few if any of them have their own Wikipedia page. I have, however, doubted pretty much everything else he has said, as the vast majority of it appears false. What is your connection with Mr. Deepak Rao? I explained the reason for my edits - because his article is full of falsehoods - what is your excuse? BasicsOnly (talk) 17:45, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Modyyash: that is a great Strawman argument. There is no longer a mention of BJJ on his wiki page, but if you go through the edits you will see that he did claim such at one point in time on this same article. Many of his false claims have been removed from this article. He still claims he is a BJJ blackbelt on his website. https://bjjmumbai.com/. His other claims can easily be seen via one of the many archive sites on the internet. I'm partial to waybackmachine which successfully documented his many claims of being a Harvard doctor, Yale Lawyer, etc. etc. And no, MBBS is not a doctor. It is a 3-4 year undergraduate degree. Mr. Rao is not a doctor (as in is not equivilent to a US Medical degree like he claims to possess). Great job trying to claim that I'm a racist, though. I don't have anything against Indian people, but I do have something against liars, and Mr. Rao appears to be a chronic one. BasicsOnly (talk) 17:51, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: I agree that we should be anti lying, but could you please point out the lies? Honorary Rank of Major by the Indian Army, A Doctor, A JKD Instructor, news articles by Indian media. I mean to ask who is lying. Your statements imply that the Indian Media which has covered so many articles on the individual is lying, Indian Army is lying. Late Richard Bustillo lied. Please explain who is lying here.
- @BasicsOnly: Let me reiterate MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the most popular and designated degree of doctors in India. Please do some research. Second, I did not call you a racist You ara calling everything unreliable so I called you out for it. Don't play the victim card. You are attacking me instead of talking about the matter at hand. Cut it out. There are a lot of things you have removed and if I find reliable references for them I will add them. Modyyash(talk) stoneagetrek 17:57, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Modyyash: Who is lying? Well, Deepak Rao for one, as can be quite extensively seen on his website and the many archives of it in which he claims to be a Harvard Doctor (as opposed to MBBS which while technically called a doctor in India is still a 3 year undergraduate degree, and not the MD that is also offered in India, or a PhD, and is FAR from the equivilent of a Harvard Medical Degree) among other claims such as BJJ blackbelt, Yale Lawyer, etc. Additionally, anyone providing that false information here in this article, such as yourself and Anu231. Again, what is your relationship with Mr. Deepak Rao? BasicsOnly (talk) 18:03, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: Dear BasicsOnly could you please enlist what are the falsehoods in the article you have been pointing out, so that we can work on them. The ones you have mentioned above are not present. If there are more please raise it and we will reach a resolution. I agree that there are thousands of Majors in the Indian Army, but I am pretty sure none of them even get a personal meet with the Indian Army Chief the head of the 2nd biggest Army in the world. In this current case he is the one who pipped the individual with the rank of a Major. The concept of Honorary Rank is that the Indian Army is doing it for the person's contributions and not just because the person has through the regular course. eg. a school allows a student to jump classes because the student has the capability. So not going through the regular channels but a direct honorary rank is a mark of capability, recognition not to be dismissed of.
- I have no idea which of you 4 wrote this, but I suppose it doesn't matter since you all appear to be speaking for Mr. Rao, and are very clearly not unbiased actors. It is not uncommon to meet the head of the Army. In my time in service I met the Commanding General, the Sergeant Major of the Army, the Chief of Staff, the President, and many other powerful figures. I also trained many soldiers. I still don't have a Wikipedia page. Why? Because these are not things that deserve a Wikipedia page. It's just an honorary rank, just the same as famous actors get honorary degrees. They are ultimately meaningless and worthless. It is not something that makes a person a notable figure worthy of their own Wikipedia page. The honorary rank of major is quite simply not as important as even a regular Major, as the regular Major is an actual member of the armed forces with a real military career. Yet there are many thousands of majors in the world, and not one of them has a WIkipedia page solely because of their rank. BasicsOnly (talk) 19:08, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: You agree that he is an honorary Major - according to you it may not be a big deal but it's not what your personal belief is right. It's contextual to a country and now I have to call this out. All your rant about him not being a doctor now falsified and hence instead of acknowledging that you were wrong you went on a tangent. All your edits are targeted towards him? So who is biased now. It is a clear agenda that you have. Are you saying that you are the authority to defining what is noteworthy in every country basis your own experience within yours? Look at your arguments. If a prominent news channel/newspaper covers it - they are bought. If the Indian Army site has a clear reference to it - its no big deal. If the official MSI website has his registration details - well that website is not reliable. And you not having a Wikipedia page is your problem, you can't be spiteful because of that. If you have done good work and have enough references go ahead and put it up. I will be happy to support it if it is worthy. This single-minded agenda of targeting a page speaks volumes about it.Modyyash(talk)
- @Modyyash: I think you guys need to be clear about your relationship with Mr. Deepak Rao. It is very clear that you are either paid by him, or you actually are him or one of his close associates. Failing to report a conflict of interest is a violation of the Wikipedia Rules. I already covered why it is obvious that you have a deep and vested interest in Mr. Rao based off of your edit content above. What is your interest in Mr. Deepak Rao? BasicsOnly (talk) 03:30, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: You are pro at this. You definitely know the ins & outs of wikipedia editing, the way the system works and you have gone systematically about it by the book. You are definitely quite a net savvy person. One thing I do not understand is that your wikipedia account is barely 9 days old, you definitely have a lot of knowledge on wikipedia, procedural details, that hints of a prior deep exposure to the wikipedia platform and its rules & regulations. I suspect this account of yours is not your original account on wikipedia, its created for a specific purpose. Secondly I checked the Bullshido forum as well where you have declared your internet presence. There as well 90% of your posts have been about this same individual Deepak Rao. Now looking at a bigger picture you are active on 2 platforms on internet that we are aware of, both the platforms you are aggressively targeting a single individual and his family so to speak. On both platforms sole contribution of your is against an individual. This attitude of your does not chalk up to the standard of being a Neutral Point of View, its biased and leading.
- @103.212.141.59: You forgot to sign your comment. Wikipedia editing is not rocket science. I'm rather decent at picking things up and have had the opportunity to see many experienced editors at work to include Boing! said Zebedee (talk · contribs) and others. I invite any admin with permissions to do so to check my IP and see if I'm connected with any other Wikipedia account. I'm quite sure that they can also tell if someone is using a proxy service, which I am not. I am located over 5000 km away from India and have no vested interest financial or otherwise in Mr. Deepak Rao. However, I have never hidden the fact that I disapprove of the constant mistruths perpetuated by Mr. Deepak Rao, and I have publically disclosed every location in which I commented regarding this situation. My actual end goal is to improve the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu article to Featured Article status, but I can't abide a liar or a charlatan. What I find more curious is the fact that you are posting from IP, have only this one comment as a contribution, Wikipedia geolocate pinpoints you to Mumbai, India, and you seem to be very vigorously advocating on Mr. Deepak Rao's behalf. What is YOUR connection to Mr. Deepak Rao? Which of the other users in this thread are you, or are you yet another paid advocate? BasicsOnly (talk) 05:44, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- @103.212.141.59: Also, it is worth pointing out that Wikipedia geolocate puts you 13.2 km away from Mr. Deepak Rao's school, "ACADEMY OF COMBAT & REHAB CLINIC, Shiv Shakti Building Shree Krishna hotel JP Road, near Udipi, Andheri, 400053, India". Do I have the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Rao himself right now, or are you one of his family members? BasicsOnly (talk) 06:04, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BasicsOnly: You are sharing my public ip on forums i.e. violation of my privacy. https://www.bullshido.net/forums/forum/main-discussion-forums/ymas/4595579-bjj-mumbai-definitely-bullshido/page4 proof for the same. Request you to please delete the post and refrain from doing so in future.
- @103.212.141.59: Actually, it's not. You are publishing from a public IP. Everyone can see your IP address. It is also in the edits history for this page and will stay there. If you did not want to show your IP, you would have made an account, but you did not log into an account, likely because whichever main account you use has all of its edits regarding Deepak Rao, Seema Rao, or Komal Rao. Also, it is immediately relevant to display your conflict of interest given that you are just 13 km away from the academy owned by the subject of the article, and in fact it's against the Wikipedia rules to edit this talk page without signing your post.
