Cleanup tasks

http://www.cityofdekalb.com/Downloads/City%20Manager/Van%20Buer%20-%20Press%20Release%202.pdf Please read it and edit the related. 29 July 2008

This article is all over the place unfortunately and short on history. If you feel you can improve it, please go ahead and get involved. I have archived the old talk page to help clean this up. Emax0 02:45, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The radio,tv and park listings should be removed.Coffeelubber 20:08, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added a sentence about pronunciation at the beginning of the article. I'm rather new to editing so I hope I did it okay. I took my cue from the Prescott, Arizona article, but I can try to figure out pronunciation conventions for it. Should I cite a source for pronunciation? I made a couple of minor edits and cleaned up an instance of vandalism. Under the section "Attractions," there was an instance of vandalism regarding the horse slaughter plant. I changed it from "They also have one of the three slaughter houses in the US. Where they shoot stun rods in the horses' brain, then slit the horses' throats, and transport the meat to other countries, like France, Belgain, and Japan." to "Cavel, located in DeKalb, is one of three horse slaughter houses in the US. Due to recent debate in the US Congress and recent court rulings, the future of this and the other slaughter houses is in question." I do believe that Cavel deserves a mention given the high profile of the recent controversy, but the former was obvious vandalism IMHO. The minor edits I made were these: Under the section "Park Facilities" I changed "Ellwood House Museum" to "Ellwood House Museum and Park" to be consistent with what the museum itself has on it's sign. Also, under the heading "history" I changed the description of the genre of the Charles Bronson band to be consistent with their Wiki page. Flauty 17:24, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent vandals

[edit]

This page has seen quite a bit of vandalism of late. Perhaps it should be locked to unregistered users or whatever. A mcmurray 18:17, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Star Worlds Arcade

[edit]

I think that Star Worlds Arcade should be recognized on this wikipedia page without getting deleted due to the fact that it is one of the last-surviving retro arcades and is also an attraction to those who are not from DeKalb. JazzButcher 06:43, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um no. See your talk page.A mcmurray 07:11, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, it shouldn't be included. It is just a business. Now, if they were in a building that was 150 years old, and had some history behind it, that is a different story. Otherwise it is just promoting a business. The only other exception would be if the place was a major place of employment, over 1000+ workers, but even then I would prolly have to say no also.--Kranar drogin 12:08, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also From User talk:Dual Freq :Wikipedia is not the yellow pages and Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. An arcade doesn't strike me as worth mentioning unless its registered historical or something. Those sections kind of attract that sort of thing just like local bands in notable persons sections.

This is called building consensus. : )

Let's represent this place for what it is. It's not the last of a dying breed. It's a new establishment designed to look like the last of a dying breed. Authentic old time establishments (diners, soda fountains, drive-ins) serve as local landmarks with a history that goes back generations. A new establishment designed to look like an old establishment has no legs. We have no idea if this place will be around next month or next year. While the games may bring back memories, the establishment does not. As a result, I would not include this establishment in this article. You may want to include a link, though, to the local Chamber of Commerce's business directory. That would put readers just one link away yet places all organizations on an equal footing. hello. ive left this message on A mcmurray's discussion page and, since you are now a part of this, decided to leave it on yours as well. I still fail to realize how this does not qualify as an attraction... It is something that is out-of-the-ordinary and is hard to come by (well, at least it is for me seeing as how this arcade is the only one of it's kind within hundreds of miles of my location). I can see how it isn't a landmark, but the original category title wasn't just about landmarks, it was about points of interest/attractions as well. Now please, if you wish to get back into this debate that you have started, explain why this would not qualify as an attraction even with 2 different articles about it published. thank you. JazzButcher 03:52, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In reading these two articles, I see that they verify the place exists. However, they give no indication that it's notable. They simply describe the nature of the business and its owner. The original section heading read in part "Famous", yet these articles give no indication that this place has any "fame" at all. Your comments above don't address the issues I've already raised. There's no reason this place can't or won't go out of business this year or the next. Most new businesses do fail. And lastly, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a business index or advertising forum. My recommendation above still stands. Rklawton 04:30, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I still agree this doesn't merit it getting a mention. It would be like trying to get Chuck E. Cheese's in for it being in Rockford. Yes, it is a place to go and to have fun, but for a place like the Wikipedia it would be nothing more than advertising for that company. It would be the same as putting up that there is a Casey's General Stores or a McDonald's in DeKalb. Since the company does not have a history, meaning been around for like 50+ years and in the building that Billy the Kid was gunned down, then no, it can't be talked about.--Kranar drogin 04:45, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
About being famous, I've lived in DeKalb for 3+ years, and I haven't even heard of this place until you just mentioned it, and I love arcade games, so it's not all that famous. Flauty 17:02, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Dekalblogo.gif

[edit]

Image:Dekalblogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:11, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Broken Grammar

[edit]

In the second paragraph of History, the grammar is really messed up. I'm not sure what it should be, but someone should fix it. Jumper4677 (talk) 14:37, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i see nothing wrong with the grammar on the second paragraph of history. Nickawesome2023 (talk) 10:01, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Piano manufacturer

[edit]

Pianos were made by a local company that was bought by Wurlitzer, which continued building instruments at the same place. This is mentioned in the Wikipedia article on Wurlitzer. Is this worthy of inclusion? https://archon.lib.niu.edu/?p=collections/findingaid&id=169&q= Kdammers (talk) 09:38, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
