Concerns
[edit]I'm hoping that when the "trifling monograph" by Raimond Lapins turns up, the following will be made clearer:
- Education and experience. What qualifications, if any, did he hold? If an untrained amateur he got a lot of serious work and respect from qualified professionals. The "year in England" may hold a key, but can't find dates or further info.
- was brother William Garlick born in 1822 or 1828? both may be found in genealogy sites; neither is unlikely. Passenger list has William aged 15 and Thomas aged 11, which supports the 1922 argument, but his marriage notice calls him "youngest son of Moses Garlick"
This last may sound a trifling concern, but ADB makes two apparently contradicting statements about his family:
- "About 1862 he married Lucy King; she died on 26 July 1871 leaving three sons." I count two. There was a third son John Reginald Garlick, born and died in 1866.
- "He was survived by his second wife Mary Rebecca (1832?-1912), a widow whom he had married on 29 September 1877, and by a son and a daughter."
neither of which is compatible with newspaper records. Doug butler (talk) 21:06, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
