Citation needed

[edit]

I added the germ of the current carpet industry passage a few years back before the whole referencing thing took off at wikipedia. I had a reference at the time, but I have no idea what it is anymore. Is anyone able to reference any of those extensive and uncited facts in that section? Psychobabble 00:01, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

also, could we get some citation on the "methamphetamine" record? i do not believe this, i live in dalton. we have plenty of pot heads, but no meth, or hardly any. could it just be taken out? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.18.169.223 (talk) 14:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The demographics section is wrong

[edit]

According to the US Census Bureau, the 2003 estimate of Dalton's population is 30,341[1]. The figure in the article looks more like a population estimate for Whitfield County as a whole. Also, people of Hispanic and Latino origin account for 40.2% of the Dalton population, not 60.19%.

"Tens of thousands" is also false, since 40.2% of 30,341 is about 12,197. That wording might be accurate for all of Whitfield county; the 2006 estimate of the Whitfield County population is 92,999[2] and 28.2% of that is about 26,226, which I guess is technically "tens of thousands."

Demographic vandalism identified - Question about the preferred fix

[edit]

With some effort and tedium, I have determined that the paragraph about a census estimate from 2006 was vandalized by Kyng67 on 13 February 2011. The census estimate for 2006 was added by 12.6.128.8 at 7:37 am on 8 July 2010, and those original numbers fit well with other data. The vandal mostly changed just the thousands digit and above (leaving the last three digits of most numbers intact). This allowed my "Mathematics OCD" to solve the puzzle. However, the right fix isn't clear to me. I can restore data originally provided by the venerable 12.6.128.8, or the 2006 paragraph can just be removed. There were no unexpected jumps between 2006 and the precise numbers of 2010, so the 2006 estimates seem superfluous to me. So Daltonites and Daltonphiles, what do you prefer: restore the correct 2006 estimates, or remove them in deference to the precise 2010 census data?

Opinion and unclear writing near end of section

[edit]

The text below does not fit well and should be rewritten to provide clarity, if not deleted:

After the lay-offs companies like Mohawk Industries paid workers with twenty years seniority a "small severance package."[6] Unlike other developed countries, the United States lags behind significantly "in providing support for families who lose their jobs."[9]

There is no clear reference to what "lay-offs" the text is referring to. The second sentence borders on opinion and does not specifically relate to the geographic entry. Perhaps a change could be "the area has faced significant layoffs in the flooring industry, with modest severance packages, leading to economic hardship" but I don't know if that is accurate, nor do I have a source for that.

Environmental Issues

[edit]

I'm not sure why something is listed in the opening section about environmental issues with Dow & Dalton Utilities. It should probably be moved elsewhere or removed entirely. Perhaps put it on Dow Chemicals or Dalton Utilities entries? —Preceding unsigned comment added by NWGaEagle (talkcontribs) 14:44, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bohannon Gang

[edit]

There is no mention of the Bohannon Gang trial of 1897. According to the Atlanta Constitution, the people of Dalton, Georgia could date "all human affairs with relation to three eras: The Christian, The removal of the Indians, and The War. Henceforth (October 17, 1897) there will be another, and events will be remembered and fixed as occuring 'before the Bohannon court' or 'after the Bohannon court'." Has this event been forgotten from the history of the area? The story made the New York Times on October 24, 1897. AT2Howell (talk) 16:57, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
