Where did "江海关" come from?
[edit]The Chinese name for the custom house is "上海海关", which is clearly shown on the entrance of the building with the corresponding English name. Why is the Chinese name currently listed as "江海关" on this page?
Ctny (talk) 04:47, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
Looks like "江海关" was the name 400 years ago, but the current Chinese name is "上海海关"

- "上海海关" is the current name of the institution (Shanghai Customs) using the building. The name of the building is "江海关", just as, for example, the corresponding building in Wuhan is still called the "江汉关" even though that is not the name of the Wuhan customs service (which is "Wuhan Customs"). --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 13:58, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
wall panels
[edit]I added the wall panel photos. If someone can translated the panels from Chinese to English, that would be really cool!

What is the difference between "Custom house" and "Customs house"?
[edit]We always say "Customs house" nowadays, but which shown on the entrance is "Custom house", so what is the difference between them? 222.70.77.48 (talk) 07:38, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
- The traditional British usage is singular: e.g. Custom House, City of London, as was early usage in the US, e.g. United States Custom House (New York City). The official name as shown on the inscription on the building follows that traditional usage. I have now moved the page on this basis. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 14:22, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Opened in 1684
[edit]Shouldn't we mention that this custom house opened in 1684, if we intend to be as encyclopedic as possible? 98.123.38.211 (talk) 20:19, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
