Influence on Popular Culture
[edit]- Don McLean wrote the hit song "Vincent" in 1971 after reading a biography on Vincent Van Gogh. (www.donmclean.com)
- Variations on images by Van Gogh have been widely reproduced for retail sales in a variety of forms such as calendars, posters, t-shirts, shoes, handbags, and scarves; such products are sold in museum gift shops around the world.
- Van Gogh's "Letters to Theo" inspired poet and novelist Giannina Braschi to write about her creative process in "Yo-Yo Boing!" (1998) and "Empire of Dreams" (1994).
- Many poets have been inspired by the writing and paintings of Van Gogh, including: Marianne Moore, Alicia Ostriker, Giannina Braschi, Paul Mariani, Tory Dent, Jane Cooper, Carol Frost. (www.poets.org)
