Sri Lankan CID

"The Criminal Investigation Department of the Sri Lanka Police Service is responsible for carried out investigations into crimes, including murders and organized crime. It was established in 1870."

User:Police,Mad,Jack has deleted this (admittedly unsourced) addition, claiming it to be "controversial". A quick skim online only turns up the Sri Lankan police's own site to back up the 1870 date - is this highly disputed? Or is the existence of Sri Lanka's CID a controversial subject in itself? --McGeddon (talk) 21:09, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Isn't it a bit strange to have a separate paragraph, placed before anything else, which essentially says that the situation in Sri Lanka is much the same as in the rest of the Commonwealth? What is so special about Sri Lanka? Or do we need a special paragraph about every country where this applies before we actually get down to a description of what the CID is and does? I detect a whiff of national pride here - nothing wrong with that, Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and may for all I know have a first-class CID, but is it really so much more important than anything else that can be said about the subject? Contradictory

The lede of this article appears to contradict itself: it names both the CID section of Nottingham Borough Police and the Metropolitan Police Service CID as the first. Is there some nuance I'm missing? – Arms & Hearts (talk) 20:14, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

I noticed that too just now - would you believe it's been this way since 2013? The source on the Nottingham claim that was added at that time is this page: [1] If true, I'm not sure what that says about the Metropolitan Police claim to being 'the first CID'. 2.97.92.184 (talk) 14:52, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

I reworded introduction I couldn't find a reference that said the MPS CID as first. The book "The Ascent of the Detective: Police Sleuths in Victorian and Edwardian England" states there were many detective units setup after 1842. The detective branch formed in 1842 may have been the first plainclothes "detective unit". --Melbguy05 (talk) 11:47, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
