No references on Cosmos

[edit]

I say that if there is no reference for a particular Cosmo, that name should be removed from the list. It lends itself too easily to abuse otherwise. What say ye? Epachamo (talk) 16:45, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Epachamo (talk) 00:00, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No objections here. Thanks for informing the community that you have made the changes. Rollidan (talk) 02:56, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I received the following post on my personal page. I still say that while the removed names may be correct, unless there is a source, there is no way to know. Epachamo (talk) 04:14, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Hi. I was wondering what type of research you actually did on this subject before you went ahead and deleted names from the wiki page...? Can you even verify that YOU are a former Cosmo yourself before you make this justification? I can tell you that at least 3 of the people that you deleted can be verified as a former Cosmo and should not have been deleted. That is just from the very brief look I had at the removed names. Regardless of if you were a past Cosmo or not, maybe you should do some actual research into things before you go ahead and try to remove the history of the mascot. Though I'm sure if you weren't a past Cosmo yourself you wouldn't be able to get access to any of this information anyways, so maybe you should let the people actually working as his boss and coordinator do these kinds of edits. For the record, there is a video on YouTube of Cosmo's 50th birthday celebration where MANY of the Cosmos that you deleted from the list are actually recognized IN PERSON at a BYU home basketball game. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DidYouEvenResearchThis? Past Cosmos

[edit]

This entire section that lists the past Cosmos is un-encyclopedic and does not belong. Wikipedia is not a directory or indiscriminate list of things. There is not a single notable person on this list. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:09, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be more specific? Which of the six items on the list of indiscriminate things do you think this article violates? Epachamo (talk) 06:53, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Let's start with the first one. There's not a single person on this list who is notable. We don't maintain lists of trivia for people who all they are known for is playing a school mascot. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 12:49, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They are notable enough to be included in references. Daniel T. Gallego was one of the first Cosmos and important in what it became. Should definitely be on the list. At the very least Charlie Bird made a number of newspaper articles, and I'd think you'd agree should be on this list. Epachamo (talk) 18:44, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, sorry, they aren't. At least not by your description. The reference used is a primary source, so that doesn't count. I'm using the Wikipedia definition of notable. If they are notable enough to have their standalone article... then, sure. I think we're going to need a neutral, third opinion on this. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 15:36, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Response to third opinion request (disagreement about whether a listing of who played the mascot should be included in the article or not):
I am responding to a third opinion request for this page. I have made no previous edits on Cosmo the Cougar and have no known association with the editors involved in this discussion. The third opinion process is informal and I have no special powers or authority apart from being a fresh pair of eyes.

The subject of this article is Cosmo the Cougar. Notwithstanding that the editors involved have framed this as a dispute about V and RS, I think that this really a dispute about whether the people who playsd the mascot are OOS. If RSes discuss who portrayed the actors, then they're likely in scope, even if those actors don't have inherent notability. I see that the main source in the article is BYU Magazine; I'm not sure if that's an RS. I recommend going to RSN for an assessment of the sources. voorts (talk/contributions) 16:13, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
