Clarifying Rainbow trout - Steelhead taxonomy
[edit]Steelhead and rainbow trout are both the same species and there are no genetic differences between them (Behnke 2002). In this particular region, the subspecies is the Coastal rainbow trout (O. m. irideus). Both anadromous (steelhead) and stream resident (rainbow trout) forms most likely existed in this creek prior to intervention by humans. The specific sources cited don't mention any stocking of rainbow trout in the creek, so one would suggest that the stream resident forms found above the dam are indeed native Coastal rainbow trout not hatchery descendants. Stream resident rainbow trout are not "descendants" of steelhead as both anadromous and stream resident forms can co exist and spawn in the same stream. (Behnke 2002) Behnke even cites studies that show where both forms exist, some progeny of one form may have a parent of the other form.
For consistency when referencing steelhead in WP articles, we've tried to refrain from using "Steelhead trout" even through it is used occasionally in literature. It leads one to think that it is a separate species of trout, instead of merely a life form of rainbow trout--coastal rainbow (o. m. irideus) or Columbia River Redband trout (O. m. gairdneri). --Mike Cline (talk) 16:23, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
