[edit]Consignment stores are common around the world and were not invented in Japan in the 2000s. Consignment stores are common in touristy areas, selling trinkets and artwork, with commission on sales going to the artist. Sometimes artists need to rent the shelf space, in other cases they are required to participate in running the shop. Doodle77 (talk) 21:53, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
And consignment stores take over forms than the plastic box model described here. Wschart (talk) 12:37, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
- It should probably be merged with Consignment, which already talks about "consignment shops". --- Wikitiki89 (talk) - 19:47, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
- I totally agree with those sentiments. Consignment shops are hardly a recent innovation! At very least, effort should be made to clearly separate the Akihabara fad from the noun and the concept. This (for lack of a better term) article might be salvaged by figuring out what the Japanese called it and either transliterating the sounds into Western characters or translating the term itself into English, then renaming the page.
- If it's any help, Google Translate says that Japanese for "consignment store" is 委託販売店 (itaku hanbai-ten), "hanbai" meaning "sale"/"to sell" though the suffix apparently makes it "sales-heaven." However, "itaku" comes back as "to hurt," "itaku hanbai" as "very much," and "itaku hanbai-ten" as "effortlessly" so probably not reliable here.
- GT says the Chinese characters offered here mean "checkered shop" though the link actually routes to a Chinese WP article called "plaid shop."
