Coherent Breathing
[edit]It's not clear to me whether this belongs here or at Breathwork (New Age). Any opinions? Skyerise (talk) 14:20, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
After finding a journal source, it seems it goes here under pyschotherapy. Other opinions still welcome. Skyerise (talk) 16:19, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'm no expert at reading medical articles, but the cited article appears to me to weigh against "coherent breathing" as a sound medical intervention any better than a general mindful breathing placebo intervention. I found various other popular sources describing the basics of "coherent breathing" but nothing that looked reliable. Its branding as "coherent breathing", while essentially being a breathwork cycle ripped from various Eastern practices, sounds New Age to me. StereoFolic (talk) 16:10, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
- Actually, I'll take that back. Reading the journal article more, in the Background section they describe "coherent breathing" more as a descriptive title describing those various Eastern practices, where "coherent" means attempting to synchronize breathing with other cardiovascular cycles. In that sense, I would recommend placing this into a "Medical studies" section, and not describing "coherent breathing" as a standalone practice at all. StereoFolic (talk) 16:21, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Music inclusion
[edit]I just came across this article from the recently-added link from Circular breathing, and I'm unsure if musical uses really belong here. It seems to me that this article is primarily discussing conscious breathing techniques, primarily for purported physical/mental/spiritual health benefits. Musical applications of breath control seem to be significantly different than these - they're mechanical in purpose, and as the article acknowledges, advanced musicians typically are far less consciously aware of their breath control than students. If this section remains in the article, I think it should be accompanied by a few reliable sources discussing musical breath control in the same category of activity as the other forms of breathwork discussed in this article. StereoFolic (talk) 16:32, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- @StereoFolic: Circular breathing must be established by conscious effort before it becomes automatic and unconscious. Please also note that the article title needs to be discussed. Breathing exercises and Breathing techniques also redirect here. The article doesn't assume specific results as you suggest, only that the effort be consciously applied. I don't think the current title is the best one, but that's where the article has been up to now. You may also want to note that breathing in singing is a matter of research with one paper listed in further reading: Platte, S. L.; et al. (2024). "Breathing with the Conductor? A Prospective, Quasi-Experimental Exploration of Breathing Habits in Choral Singers". Journal of Voice. 38 (1): 152–160. doi:10.1016/j.jvoice.2021.07.020. PMID 34551860. S2CID 237608913. I don't see any reason not to include music here. Skyerise (talk) 16:48, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining. My impression about the implied subject of the article came more from the content than the title. My main concern is that readers may get the impression that musical breath technique and spiritual breathwork are concretely related in a non-incidental manner. (To be sure, they are related in some traditions, but not in all!) If a reorganization is underway then I won't contest the inclusion here while that's figured out. - Note: there is also ongoing discussion at Talk:Breathwork (New Age) about improving the organization of articles on breathwork and other breathing practices. Skyerise (talk) 17:16, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
