B class rating?
[edit]I don't think this article is quite up to a B rating just yet. Problems I see are the red links and the lack of an image (nothing to add visual interest).--Sting Buzz Me... 00:40, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
two ways?
[edit]OK, I'm an ignoramus, but I always thought that homing pigeons could only be relied on to go home, and had to be taken out to their starting point. How did this one successfully navigate back and forth between Britain and France? Some sort of explanation should be included, I think. --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 00:20, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- No you are not an ignoramus. When the article states "more than ninety trips into and out of German occupied France," he was carried into France by a parachuting soldier. Then later released with an attached message to fly home with. The article does not mention that, so I'll see what I can do.--Sting Buzz Me... 00:30, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm just looking through The Pigeon by Wendell Levi at the moment. There is a great picture of a British Paratrooper carrying a cylindrical container (with air holes in end) for holding the messenger pigeons. I can't use it because of copyright but it illustrates the method well. The section also mentions that the National Pigeon Service was a volunteer civilian organisation formed in 1938.--Sting Buzz Me... 00:38, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Death

County notability
[edit]I've added a project banner per Talk:All_Alone_(pigeon) in which I have no interests, the relevant banner had been added by someone else. Please write there whether you support or object to a county category added to the elite war pigeons who received the Dickin Medal in principle. - Adam37 Talk 18:11, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
