- ... that College Street, Dublin has a statue of Thomas Moore? Source: The Buildings of Ireland, Christine Casey p. 422 "On a traffic island in College Street is charmless bronze status of the composer Thomas Moore"
Created by Ritchie333 (talk) and Ww2censor (talk). Nominated by Ritchie333 (talk) at 17:07, 24 March 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/College Street, Dublin; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.
- Length, date, hook, qpq, close paraphrase check ok. Btw, File:Coral and Copper Snow Thomas Moore statue NLI.jpg is available on commons. --Soman (talk) 23:29, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
- I was writing my review. beat me to it. Anway, rephrase "a lack of forward planning for the introduction of Luas Cross City" as it is copied directly + the hook needs more work to be interesting you can add more infromation on what is the status is facing, why it was erected, etc. I will come back with some alternatives later FuzzyMagma (talk) 23:31, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
- FuzzyMagma I'd already removed some close paraphrasing by Ww2censor, but I've gone through again and copyedited everything else, so that shouldn't be an issue now. Ww2censor I'd hate to see another longstanding editor get indef blocked for copyvios - there have been too many recently, so please just take care when writing from a source. As for the hook, I can't think of anything else, I wanted to do something about the lanterns but the source didn't bring up anything particularly good. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:03, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma and Ritchie333:: There was no intention to close paraphrase, so good it has been revised. I am going to add some more today. The possible use of the whole block by the Bank of Ireland, before they got the old parliament building they now occupy on College Green, might make an interesting tag. Let me add some more later on. ww2censor (talk) 11:18, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma and Ritchie333:: I've added some more prose and would like to add the first visit Queen Victoria to the history I think appropriate. I also found a freely licenced image of the lamp post that is now here if it is needed. Please review my prose again. ww2censor (talk) 16:06, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- ALT1: ... that College Street, Dublin has a statue of Thomas Moore, erected by Christopher Moore (no relation)?
- ALT2: ... that College Street, Dublin has a statue of Moore erected by Moore facing Listen Now Again? (this need to be added to the article and referenced, but can we reference google maps?)
- ALT3: ... that College Street, Dublin has a statue of Moore erected by Moore?
- Wait for @Ww2censor and Ritchie333: to add the Queen prose as it may bring sometimes interesting. PS: I totally believe that was no intention of copyvios. Good article and well sourced …FuzzyMagma (talk) 21:14, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- ALT4: ... that Queen Victoria came to College Street, Dublin in 1849 chaperoned by Fortitude, Justice, and Liberty?
- @FuzzyMagma and Ritchie333: I've done all I can think of with available sources. ww2censor (talk) 11:51, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor: love ALT4! FuzzyMagma (talk) 14:37, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

- @FuzzyMagma and Ritchie333:I found 2 different high quality versions of a street view engravings showing the east portico and the 3 statues, and have uploaded them here c:Category:George Petrie (artist). Choose the one you like if you think it will add to the DYK. ww2censor (talk) 14:35, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor: if you want to include the image then the hook need to changed to reflect that. I would recommending just go with the hook with the image, which you can add to the article FuzzyMagma (talk) 14:41, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

What would you suggest? Is the fact that Fortitude, Justice, and Liberty are on top of the building in the center of the image not enough? If not, then let's not bother with the image. ww2censor (talk) 20:09, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor and FuzzyMagma: I like the spirit of ALT4 but am not sure "chaperoned" is the right word, even if we slot this in to the "quirky" slot. Have revised the corresponding sentence in the article for clarity and would offer another hook on the same idea:
- ALT5: ... that spectators climbed up to Fortitude, Justice, and Liberty on College Street, Dublin, for a view of Queen Victoria? Cielquiparle (talk) 12:13, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Cc: @Ritchie333: as FYI. Cielquiparle (talk) 10:12, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- "chaperoned" is indeed quirky and dramatic but ALT5 is also good. @Ww2censor: I had no problem with the photo, it is just the structure of the hook is different when an image is involved. FuzzyMagma (talk) 13:08, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- Comment: @Cielquiparle, FuzzyMagma, Richie333, and Soman: Perhaps everyone is content after so long. By way of explanation, I was looking for a synonym to use and thought "chaperoned" fit the bill but am happy to accept another description. ALT5 should work out well with the image added though perhaps the wikilink could be to the "The Famine Queen" instead of "Queen Victoria" as a twist. ww2censor (talk) 09:49, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Ww2censor: Appreciate the creative thinking, but I'm afraid this is getting further and further away from what any source actually says about College Street, Dublin, specifically. I was hoping the source I added from JSTOR ("The Royal Visits to Dublin") might shed some light, but the only mention of College Street is with regard to the 1868 engraving depicting the Prince and Princess of Wales' visit. (I also uploaded that image to Commons, but it's not particularly high quality.) Cielquiparle (talk) 10:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Note to promoter: For the record, this nomination is approved. I can't promote it anymore as I've now written a hook (which FuzzyMagma said was good too). I'm happy to keep workshopping if needed, but equally happy for someone else to promote if any of the hooks look ok. Thanks. Cielquiparle (talk) 14:10, 25 May 2023 (UTC)
