Comparison
[edit]If the coil is tilted, then the height of pumping is indefinite and does not depend on seals of any kind - the pump operates like an Archimedes screw, with an advantage of not needing any seals at all (while Archimedes screw requires seals between screw and the outer tubing).

Expanding on what Andy Dingley wrote, Archimedian Screws do not require seals if the casing is attached to the spiral and rotates with it. A helical pipe is exactly equivalent. I have seen Archimedian Screws for lifting grain where only the spiral rotated but they don't have the same leakage problem that water presents. NB coil and spiral are both a bit ambiguous, they could both be planar spiral, or helical spiral. Malcolm (unable to log in for some reason)

Merge discussion
[edit]The articles Coil pump and Spiral tube water wheel are really about the same thing and Spiral pump is a very similar concept. wikipedia would be made more coherent by merging these articles.
Wikipedia could benefit from an overarching Water lifting device article to bring together all such mechanisms as distinct from pumps.
- They're not the same thing, as one is spiral and one is helical. I would agree though that they're best covered by merging into one article. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:49, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
I agree that they should be merged. They all work in the same way, they are variations on a theme, and the pages are small.
I also agree that there should be a water lifting page. I am currently preparing a rewrite of the water wheel page, see draft:water wheel. I feel that there should be a top level water wheel page with sub pages for power generation, pumping, propulsion, stirring (however, having found this discussion, pages rather than sub-pages is probably more appropriate). At present the water lifting material on the wheels page is mixed in with power generation, and swamped by it. There is material there which should be in a water lifting/pumping with a wheel page. An overall structure for this whole area is needed. See also noria and scoop wheel.

- In summary, there seems to be a consensus that they are best discussed together, but as they are distinct they need separate section. As Malcolm.boura (talk · contribs) notes there should be a joint page, perhaps "water lifting" or "water pumping" that can be the target for this page, Spiral pump, Spiral tube water wheel, and perhaps others. Interestingly the water pumping already exists as an unreferenced and rather bland page which would benefit from some referenced content. Therefore, I propose merging all 3 articles to water pumping.
