Cinnamon basil is a more common name in English than Vietnamese basil

[edit]

Google shows 69,400 results for "cinnamon basil" and only 5,780 result for "Vietnamese basil", of which many don't even refer to "cinnamon basil" but just to Vietnamese basil dishes which are often made with other kinds of basil. Per WP:COMMONNAME, the article should be reverted to Cinnamon basil. - Takeaway (talk) 07:56, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Very confused article

[edit]

This article is a mess, mainly in that it has conflated "Vietnamese basil" with cinnamon basil. It's unclear from my research whether there even exists a cultivar as "cinnamon basil"; what I am more confident in is that "cinnamon basil" at best refers to two different kinds of basil: First, a basil that contains cinnamate, and second, a basil that is either the same as Thai basil (i.e., a synonym for a cultivar like 'Siam Queen'), or some kind of particular cultivar of Thai basil. It doesn't help that plenty of sources online seem to be using Wikipedia as the original reference. This will take some deeper research to sort things out, but for now, I think any reference to its usage in Vietnamese cuisine really should be in the Thai basil article (which also needs some work, as does the main basil article).
