Etymology

More than most brass instruments, the cimbasso deserves an etymology section I think... the tortured history of the term is covered in detail in both the Meucci article and Bevan's The Tuba Family tome. I hope to do this in the next day or two. — Jon (talk) 00:40, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Construction section

A TODO to self/others, requires more refs/checking. The construction section (dealing with the modern instrument) can have more details about physical characteristics and measurements, e.g. bore & bell diameters, mouthpiece receivers, etc. A bit about the F vs. the bigger CC and BB♭ instruments, still made. Since they're usually played by tuba players (particularly in the US), there has been some demand for a bigger instrument with a more "conical feel" in tension with Verdi's intended trombone-like cylindrical bore sound. This made some manufacturers cater to both needs, for example Červený manufacture two cimbassi in F: the CVT 576-51C with a 0.598" bore and 10" bell, presumably aimed at a bass trombonist since it's listed in the "Valve trombones" section of their catalogue, and the CFC 652-5I with a tuba-like bore of 0.717" and larger 11" bell with much wider flare, listed with the tubas.[1] More detail about valves; mostly built with rotary valves, Haag no longer make the 5-Hagmann cimbasso (Why? I emailed Fabian, he said that tuba players complained that the valves were too slow); yet Mattis Cederberg loves his one!* Pistons valves are uncommon; that said, British cimbasso maker Mike Johnson uses the piston valve compensation system common in British band tubas to make compensating four-valve models, and "double" models in compensating E♭ (the 4th valve providing the low B♭, and the compensation dispensing with the need for a 5th valve).[2] It might be worthwhile (or at least fun) to mention that LA tubist Jim Self had a euphonium-like compact design of F cimbasso built from a Yamaha F tuba, which was somewhat inevitably christened the "Jimbasso".[3]Jon (talk) 01:58, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonathanischoice: thank you for that. I have commented and passed all criteria apart from 1b, which needs lede expansion. I should have explained better: templates are not mandatory but will help if other people wish to contribute to the article or if it is taken to peer review.     It seems odd to have The modern instrument first appeared as the trombone basso Verdi in the 1880s, has four to six rotary valves (or occasionally piston valves), a forward-facing bell, and a predominantly cylindrical bore, as the sentence adds a fact about its history to a list sentence (has four to six rotary valves...and a predominantly cylindrical bore) about its construction. I would put a full stop after 1880s, and say "... in the 1880s. It has four to six...".

    I've assumed you meant {{Use dmy dates}}, but what do you mean by the {{engvar}} template?
    You are right about the date format template. By ENGVAR I am referring to the MOS page: the appropriate templates would be {{Use British English}} and {{Use American English}} etc.
    Ok; so far it hasn't been an issue by avoiding spelling/grammar differences but I normally write in en_NZ or en_GB, so there might be some "isms" that slip through. What should we use?
    It's up to you, as you are the main contributor. It would be important to note here that if you want to use en GB, false titles should be removed.
    I'm happy to leave it out since it's not associated with a region, unless you think it is required for GA, in which case we should probably choose en_US?
    It's not required for GA, but standardisation will be looked for if you want to ever go to a higher standard review, like peer review. It's fine for GA though, so I would pass this point without it.

    I've moved them as suggested, except for Meucci 2001 which is a Grove Dictionary entry, which I've tended to treat as an inline source, partly for the convenience of the {{Cite Grove}} shortcut. Your thoughts?

    Sources used are from reliable secondary sources, and primary sources used in accordance with WP:ABOUTSELF. Dates, quotes and stats are directly cited.

    Spotchecks look good, however there seems to be some OR:
    • The mouthpiece receiver is usually sized to take tuba shank mouthpieces, or sometimes the smaller bass trombone shank size depending on the size of the instrument. This phrase is uncited. Could it be given a citation?
    As a cimbasso player I just know that they take tuba size mouthpieces and that some smaller models (e.g. Červený) take a bass trombone size, but as you might imagine (with literature being extremely thin) this is not something I've been able to find written down anywhere, other than inferring it from the catalogues/specs in the manufacturer ref. For now I've removed the bit about bass trombone shank since almost all modern instruments take tuba shank.
    • Some names in the "musicians" section are not supported by the text (Johnson, Smith, Miotti and Taylor). Could these be cited or removed?

    • Wikilink Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the same caption, I think it would benefit from mentioning that this is an example of the basson russe

More digging

For §Repertoire and Performance, we need a bit more about modern use of cimbasso in orchestras by tuba players, and its use instead of the tuba; here's Roger Bobo from c. 2007 on the now defunct tubanews.com website.[1] There's also two doctoral theses about performance practice and pedagogy, Constantino 2010,[2] and Peterson 2018[3] which includes interviews with Jim Self and Doug Tornquist. There's also the stellar work of Jack Adler-McKean at RSNM on the early history of the tuba; a PhD thesis,[4] and his historical performance practice excerpts on YouTube, including the serpent, early cimbasso, ophicleide (keyed and valved), and a trombone basso Verdi, recorded for his book, The Techniques of Tuba Playing. — Jon (talk) 23:29, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
