Dubious Scottish Cup honour

[edit]

Sheridan's been credited with a Scottish Cup winners medal for 2007. However he didn't play in the game, nor was he on the subs bench. Facts, bizzarely, confirmed by the reference used. In the UK, a player isn't credited with a Cup winner's medal unless he actually plays or was a listed sub. I've removed this honour twice, only for it to be reinstated. I can't be arsed getting into an edit war, and maybe I am being pedantic here. Comments anyone? ShugSty (talk) 22:49, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking (not specifically for Sheridan) the FA don't take into account only a single match (but a minimum number of matches played), because many players who deserve the medal will miss it because of injury or ban in the final. For example, if a player who played in all cup matches (and is also the first goalscorer of the Cup) miss the final because of an injury or a ban, then he will not win a medal?

Now in this case, Sheridan played in only one Cup match, but i don't know the exact number of the minimum matches a player must play to win a Scottish Cup medal. Marios26 (talk) 00:01, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"For example, if a player who played in all cup matches (and is also the first goalscorer of the Cup) miss the final because of an injury or a ban, then he will not win a medal? " - I'm afraid not, certainly not in Scotland or England anyway. Unless they're actually involved on the day of the Cup Final, they don't get a medal........

BUT - then I came across this - http://www.thefa.com/~/media/776fdc2c663a48568fc3688fa667463a.ashx - it's a PDF doc about the rules/regs of the FA Cup. On the second last page, says each team on the day gets 30 medals for their playing staff and officials. So, 11 starts, 7 subs, maybe 6 or so coaching staff, still leaves around 6/7 medals for a club to dish out at their own discretion. It is a grey area, but - at the risk of repeating myself :) - unless a player is in the starting 11 or on subs bench on the day of the final, he isn't considered to have 'won' the cup. Although, it clearly isn't quite as black & white as I may have thought! ShugSty (talk) 02:15, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • So, if 30 medals are given to the Cup winners, logically the team gives the “extra” 6-7 medals to the first team players who missed the Cup final.

Of course we can only be sure for the 18 players who appeared in the Cup final (that they won a medal), but also we can’t be sure which of the players who missed the final got one of these “extra” 6-7 medals. As you said, it is not such a clear or a black and white situation. Marios26 (talk) 04:35, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

From the Scottish Football Association:FA CUP COMPETITION RULES page 1 "[...]The Scottish FA shall present a medal or a souvenir in such forms as the Board may decide to each of the players, to each of such substitutes as are eligible, the Manager or Head Coach and to the match officials, in the Final Tie.[...]"
I think it's pretty clear that only the players that participate in the final are entitled to get a medal and, thus, players that did not participate in the final cannot be considered as champions. Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 15:37, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It will most possibly take a couple of weeks. GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

  1. Is it reasonably well written?
    A. Prose is "clear and concise", without copyvios, or spelling and grammar errors:
I haven't yet checked against WP:COPYVIO. Early life section is OK. Celtics section and Loan moves section are checked and they are OK. The CSKA section is fine as well.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 23:21, 7 May 2015 (UTC) Trials and Kilmarnock sections are OK. Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 16:13, 8 May 2015 (UTC) APOEL, international, honours and statistics sections are OK.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 22:01, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Some minor grammar and syntax fixes are already done so it would be OK in this area.
By scoring a brace against Hearts on 25 September, he opened his account in his second spell with the club. This has to change to something more clear. Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 16:35, 10 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]

    B. MoS compliance for lead, layout, words to watch, fiction, and lists:
The lead is fine, the layout complies with WP:LAYOUT and Football players MOS and no words to watch were spotted. WP:EMBED and WP:WAF don't apply in the article.
  2. Is it factually accurate and verifiable?
    A. Has an appropriate reference section:
    Some references have access dates but lack their date and some the opposite. This needs to be addressed. Here's the list (ad=accessdate missing, d=date missing): 7(d), 10(d), 11(ad), 12(d), 13–15(ad), 22(d), 25 (ad), 31(d), 33(d), 34–35 (ad), 39 (d), 45 (d), 51 (d), 71 (d), 73–74 (d), 76 (d), 78 (d) Done
    B. Citations to reliable sources, where necessary:
His caps and goals for Ireland under-21 lack an inline citation. This data is not present in the external links either.
It is present in Soccerway, in external links, and also added an citation to a goal. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 08:29, 6 May 2015 (UTC) [reply]
Previously the article stated that Sheridan had 10 caps and 2 goals for Ireland U-21. Soccerway gives 8 caps and 2 goals, but I have to question its reliability. This page states that Sheridan had 10 caps for Ireland U-21. His debut was most certainly against Germany U-21, and this match is not even mentioned in Soccerway. Some further research should be done on this to reach a final reliable figure for this one.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 15:12, 6 May 2015 (UTC) [reply]
The Soccerway is the only source which has the U21 stats. It has stats for international junior competitions only, friendlies are not included. So I have removed it from the infobox and added a source to the claim in international career. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 08:14, 8 May 2015 (UTC) [reply]
Soccerway doesn't include U-21 friendly fixtures and since Sheridan has played, at least, in one U-21 friendly match the 8 caps/2 goals figure of Soccerway is obviously wrong. In this case I would consider this site far more reliable considering Irish football, since football in Ireland is its only subject (it gives a figure of 10 caps/2 goals for Ireland U-21). Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 09:19, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
His U-21 debut was against Germany U-21, a friendly fixture, not Estonia U-21. His Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 12:28, 11 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]

Instead, he would come on as a substitute without scoring, often playing out of position. This sentence is about his time at Kilmarnock and it lacks inline citation. Done
    Removed it. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 08:29, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There is no citation for his Celtic first team debut vs. Inverness Caledonian Thistle.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 16:42, 6 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]

    C. No original research:
There is a problem in this sentece: On 20 June 2013, Sheridan signed a one-year contract, with the option of a further season with APOEL from Cyprus.. The source doesn't mention anything abouth the duration of the contract. Either a source supporting the statement should be added, or the part that mentions the contract's duration should be removed.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 22:23, 9 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]

  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. Major aspects:
It lacks information about his league (probably a 1-1 draw vs QPR) or/and cup debut while in Plymouth Argyle. Done
It lacks information about his league (probably a 3-3 draw vs Dundee United) or/and cup debut while in St. Johnstone (while on loan from Celtic). Done
    Done both. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 08:59, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    B. Focused (see summary style):
The article stays focus on the topic and gives some info that add to the article.
  4. Is it neutral?
    Fair representation without bias:
On 29 March 2014, after an amazing solo effort he scored the second goal of the match against Apollon Limassol, in APOEL's 3–0 home win for the Cypriot First Division play-offs. The fact is that he scored a goal. The rest is WP:PEACOCK (plus it's not in the source). Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 22:37, 9 May 2015 (UTC) Done[reply]
    Done RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 16:23, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Is it stable?
    No edit wars, etc:
There is an unresolved issue on whether he should be listed or not as a Scottish Cup champion since he didn't play in the final. A dubious tag was entered, but it was later removed by ab IP user without any edit summary. The matter is not resolved, as it is not clear when a player is considered a Scottish Cup champion.
A player who hasnt played in cup final does not get honour as per as consensus. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 08:59, 6 May 2015 (UTC) [reply]
Actually I have already provided the Scottish FA Cup regulations in the talk page. It states that only the participants in the final can get a winners medal. We' ll have to see if the Scottish Cup win comes up again in the article. If it does I will immediately fail the nomination, until the issue is resolved. If it does't, this version will be considered stable and it will pass this one. We'll wait for at least a week to see if edit will be done on this section.Hansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 15:12, 6 May 2015 (UTC) DoneHansi667 (Neighbor Of The Beast) a penny for your thoughts? 22:01, 14 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
