Tapsel gate

[edit]

I don't get it: tapsel gate and the cattle... just how narrow it is so that a calf won't squeeze through the opening? what about sheep? If indeed it is so narrow then it should be quite low... sorry... intellect gets really bovine with age :)) NVO (talk) 20:00, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

From memory (it's about 2 months since I went there to take the pix) ... it is fairly low: no more than 3 feet (0.91 m) high. The gap when fully open is about 3 feet (0.91 m) to 4 feet (1.2 m) ... maybe not narrow enough for a calf, but cows won't make it through. This Tapsel gate is actually a bit wider than the other five in Sussex. (It's a replacement; the original one was taller.) I'm sure I read somewhere once that sheep are welcomed in churchyards because their grass-nibbling abilities keep them looking neat and tidy!
