Possible Audio Leak?
[edit]There has been an audio only clip floating around that is allegedly from Christine Chubbuck's final broadcast on youtube. I thought it was a hoax, like the video that floated around years ago, until I actually started to listen to it. I think it's real. The voice sounds identical to Chubbuck's voice based on the few clips in the public domain. The authenticity of the clip has yet to be confirmed. I hesitate to include anything about this in the main article primarily due to the question of whether or not this is authentic. Should this information be included in the main article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Michaela5556 (talk • contribs) 16:22, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- It was in the article for a short time, thoug I see it’s been removed. I think it should be 5ere. There is not much known footage of her in existence, audio or otherwise (at least in circulation) but the voice does indeed sound dead on similar to her voice in known footage of her (listen to the way she pronounces “county/counties” in both the known footage and the audio in question, for example. The lost media wiki have delta red this to be the actual audio recording of the event, for what that’s worth. I really think this should be included. ExerciseNFreedom (talk) 19:58, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- Please excuse my typos. “Delta red” is supposed to be “declared”. There should be an end parenthesis after “for example”. And “5here” should be “there”. I’d edit, but there appears to be no edit function. ExerciseNFreedom (talk) 20:01, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
I agreed at first as it seems very real, but the gunshot seems fake. And keep in mind that tech is advanced these days, perhaps they just copied her voice from what footage is available and deepfaked it or something. Perhaps it should be included with heavy mentioning that theres a possibility its fake Justanotherguy54 (talk) 01:13, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- There would need to be coverage of the audio recording in reliable secondary sources that could be cited in order for it to be included in the article, per WP:V. I searched and couldn't find anything in sources that would be considered WP:RS-compliant, but if such coverage can be found there's no reason it couldn't be at least mentioned in the article (with WP:NPOV and WP:WEIGHT duly applied, of course). The video is online
[edit]The video of her death is available on the internet archive. You can watch the full thing. Idk why the article and everyone is saying it's not available anywhere. It is 2603:8090:F05:931:A9F4:740D:37E:2E81 (talk) 01:14, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- And it's likely a fake. See the discussion at Talk:Christine Chubbuck/Archive 1#Spurious "shooting video" No way to verify the legitimacy unless it is released by the copyright holder. ~Anachronist (talk) 04:38, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
Should it be included that there is a chance she did not want to commit suicide, but just an attempt?
[edit]She mentions “attempt” and “critical condition” over just “suicide” or “pronounced dead.”(for the 3rd party transcript bit.) Perhaps she thought the position behind the back of her ear would miss her brain? I am not sure why else she would shoot at the back of her ear rather than at her brain, unless she thought she was aiming for the brain stem. Or maybe she really wanted to die and just expected a gunshot anywhere in the head to be fatal? But then why such indecisive language? On the off-chance she failed? Gunshots to the brain are universally known to be fatal, so I am not sure why she did not aim there and why she left that language. Maybe she thought the brain extended further back? There is unfortunately no way to know for certain as she’s dead, but this is a grey area. Sorry for rambling a bit but this is just so strange to me, I think there is a good chance she just wanted to attempt it which makes this all the more tragic Justanotherguy54 (talk) 01:30, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
I’ve just read something that says “proper word choice in the context she said it, it’s an attempt up until the point it’s not” so maybe I’m wrong. I guess I am just wishing she really wasn’t so sad to the point of actual suicide Justanotherguy54 (talk) 01:36, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- From The Washington Post article: "There seemed be no doubt [Chubbuck] had every intention of killing herself. There were some who were confused by the word 'attempted' suicide in her script. But those who worked with her had a ready explanation. [Chubbuck] was too good a newswoman to write suicide when it might have failed. She was too precise. And even her mother thought it not unusual. 'Chris was hedging her bets' she said." It's also explained in the article that she had learned from a police officer that pointing a gun at the lower back of the head was more "effective" than pointing at the temple. That seems to pretty well cover it. To add any other speculation about her motives that isn't backed by WP:RS-compliant sourcing would be original research, which we (presumably) all know is a big no-no on WP. A. "their father did not approve of the relationship"
[edit]"she began dating a man in his 30s when she was 21, but their father did not approve of the relationship" Who is "they" in this context? Hers? Her boyfriend's? Whose father did not approve? 2A02:A312:C73A:3500:B910:1566:AEE6:7589 (talk) 19:42, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- You're quite right. The source says "her", and now the article does as well. Favonian (talk) 11:49, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
Is it worth adding her possible experience with bipolar disorder?
[edit]In various interviews, Chubbuck's surviving brother Greg states he believes she suffered from undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and that her treatment for unipolar depression (as bipolar was not recognised in her lifetime) worsened her condition. Her moods and behaviours as told by her surviving peers certainly correspond with symptoms of bipolar disorder. Obviously she wasn't diagnosed but I feel it may be worth discussing this? 2A00:23A8:4292:1C01:4D19:AB62:E4EC:A53F (talk) 11:23, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- We would not be able to state it as a fact, but as an opinion attributed to her brother. I'd prefer this be covered in secondary sources that report this as her brother's opinion, rather than citing an interview. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:04, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
A full episode of Suncoast Digest has surfaced!
[edit]Before April 2024 the only surviving, readily-available footage of Chubbuck were two short clips from Kate Plays Christine. Now someone has released a full, decent-quality episode of Suncoast Digest to YouTube. Should we add it to the article? It seems important as we don't have many more official videos or audios of her. 2A00:23A8:4292:1C01:7002:B246:295C:837 (talk) 18:12, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
