Langstone

[edit]

Not sure whether Langstone is in Chichester Harbour - I thought not, but I may be wrong. Bosham is, I'm sure of that. The whole article could do with a closer look at its layout, and refs are confusing. Tony Holkham (talk) 16:13, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just lost my detailed reply, due to edit conflict. I do not want to do it all again now, but I think Langstone looks two ways, into two harbours.SovalValtos (talk) 16:40, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You shouldn't need to lose text in an edit conflict. Just copy your edit, close the conflict page and start again, pasting what you copied. They are a nuisance, though. Tony Holkham (talk) 16:46, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This site should help. http://www.conservancy.co.uk/page/chart/326/ .Showing part of what I had tried to say. ie I think Chichester Harbour is all the salt water area north of the gap Eastoke - West Wittering, some of which is in Hants.SovalValtos (talk) 16:57, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is a little confusing - the Fishbourne, Bosham and Thorney Channels are definitely part of Chichester Harbour. The county border seems to run down the Emsworth Channel. But no matter, really. I've no strong feelings about it, I just remember wonderful times there, on and around the water - a very special place, whatever county it's in! In Hampshire?

[edit]

It will need to be checked whether any part of Chichester Harbour is in Hampshire, as I didn't think so. If I'm right, the lead will need to be changed. Tony Holkham (talk) 16:19, 1 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ria or not?

[edit]

An off-wiki correspondent has questioned whether Chichester Harbour is a ria. I am waiting to see whether he can provide a source for this, and have deleted it for now. It does not appear in the body of the article in any case. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:06, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This may partly depend on whether the harbour is considered in the narrow sense as the broad expanse near Pilsey Island bellow the confluence of the Emsworth, Thorney, Bosham, Chichester and Fishbourne channels. The channels have more of the appearance of Rias than the harbour. Without going into the deep waters of OR or getting bogged in a general discussion, the sources in this [1] bibliography may help.SovalValtos (talk) 13:10, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am going into this in a bit more detail, but I think the unsourced assertion must be left out for now. I see that the Ria article cotains many unsourced examples, which is a concern. Thanks User:SovalValtos for the webcache - wow. Tony Holkham (Talk) 14:07, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
