Birmingham or Solihull?
[edit]People have been changing the location of Chelmsley Wood back and forth between Birmingham and Solihull. I know next to nothing about the place, but I can read maps. Administratively, Chelmsley Wood is part of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, as this Ordnance Survey map and this map on the borough website shows. Claiming otherwise is either a misunderstanding or deliberate vandalism. However, the Office for National Statistics counts Chelmsley Wood as a part of the settlement of Birmingham rather than Solihull, as evidenced by this map (both settlements are part of the West Midlands urban area). So it's probably not completely wrong to say that Chelmsley Wood is in Birmingham as well, but one has to be clear what sense of Birmingham is meant, i.e. not the City of Birmingham as an administrative unit. I don't really know how to put that into a compact opening sentence, but maybe someone else does? //Essin (talk) 22:05, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Can people PLEASE stop changing it from Birmingham to Solihull and back over and over again? I have added the infobox (including map) to indicate where exactly Chelmsley Wood is. As the map shows, officially it IS in the Borough of Solihull and we can't just ignore that fact. However as locals will know, it is generally accepted locally to be a part of Birmingham, and we can't ignore that either. Residents of Chelmsley Wood pay council tax to Solihull, and write Birmingham on their address. It is in both! Surely the best way to deal with this on wikipedia is to describe it as being in the West Midlands (surely something everyone can agree on), and then elaborate on the location. Article semi-protection request
[edit]I have requested semi-protection for this page in order to prevent unconstructive and vandalism edits by anonymous users. I have made a number of edits to the page in order to come up with an acceptable compromise over the Birmingham/Solihull issue. I have added the infobox and made changes to the wording of the lead, however the edit war seems to be continuing. I hope the admins will see the need for semi-protection here. - Why not include both:
- "Chelmsley Wood CP lies within Solihull (Metropolitan District), which lies within West Midlands (Region),"
- As stated by the source. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 20:37, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- That is what the article already says!
- "Chelmsley Wood is a neighbourhood, civil parish and large housing estate in the West Midlands, England, with a population of 13,010.[2] It is situated in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull..."
- I suspect that half the reason for this edit-war is because people are only reading the first line of the article. If you say first that it is in Solihull then you are only inviting a new edit war with people changing it to say Birmingham (as used to happen all the time in the past). Stating West Midlands first, then elaborating, is definitely the best option. Abc30 01:21, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe it could be clarified with all the controversial information in one sentence? -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 23:02, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- That is what the article already says!

The population is listed as 12,425. This number is due to the local reorganisations, the political Balkanisation, if you will, of the original Chelmsley Wood. This comprised a town of about 70,000 people, and it was for many tears the largest housing estate in Europe. Despite the renaming of parts of the estate, the inhabitants regard themselves as being of Chelmsley Wood in it's original and larger sense.
I wish also to clarify the misapprehension of crime and violence on Chelmsley; it stems from the lack of knowledge by outsiders of the scale of the place; therefore, when crime figures appropriate to a town of 70,000 have been reported, the mental picture was of them relating to a smaller population entirely, resulting in the view of Chelmsley as somewhere that eats babies and massed ommunal nocturnal burglary. Without whitewashing the criminals we do suffer from, the correct factual viewpoint would be welcomed. Maxx England (talk) 21:58, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. We go by current, official figures, not by what something used to be. Cannolis (talk) 05:35, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
No way has the population of Chelmsley Wood ever been close to 70,000, even allowing for the border changes and the invention of the name "Fordbridge" to call the west of the estate. Just to clarify and correct a common misconception, it's also never been the biggest estate in the UK, that honour goes to Becontree in Dagenham. {Huddsblue (talk) 05:04, 25 December 2015 (UTC)}
Referenced
[edit]There were some nice references out there. Does anyone have details of the area numbers to which Hanley refers? I have added some and expanded the history- what we need now is someone to take some photos of typical houses, and walkways- the interior of the shopping centre etc. Wait for spring probably. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 19:56, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
