BalltzeCheems – Cheems is the WP:COMMONNAME of Balltze. It is also the name most predominantly used in the titles of reliable sources. Google trends shows that Cheems is a more common search term by far. The country with the highest ratio of Balltze searches compared to Cheems is Bosnia and Herzegovina, with 79% Cheems to 21% Balltze. If it helps, Know Your Meme uses Cheems as well (here). The owners also often referred to the dog as "Balltze Cheems" or "Cheems Balltze" (here and here}. I personally think this move is not controversial, but at the same time I would like a consensus to be reached before the page is moved. JacobTheRox (talk) 16:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose This article is about the dog, Balltze. A "Cheems" article would be primarily about a different subject, the meme. As his owner said for him, "Remember me as ‘Balltze,’ not ‘Cheems’ or ‘cheemsburger,’ I'm just a Balltze." For "Balltze" and "Cheems" pages, I do think there should only be one or the other with a redirect, but I personally think it's better as is, with the Balltze page covering the dog and the memes derived from him. As a matter of notability they're tied together (Balltze is much more inherently connected with the Cheems meme than i.e. Doge and Kabosu), and almost all of this page's sources are about Balltze himself and then explaining the meme. • Support it is obvious that Cheems is the widely used WP:COMMONNAME. ❯❯❯ Raydann(Talk) 03:50, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per all the above. The dog is notable because of the meme; pretty much all the references frame it in this context too. –GnocchiFan (talk) 11:29, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support principally per 162 etc. If retitled, the article will need a bit of restructuring to be foremost about the meme, but that shouldn't stand in the way of an overall beneficial move. ModernDayTrilobite (talkcontribs) 14:46, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Two things to bring up.

[edit]

1. For all the edit warring between leukemia and leukaemia, I'm starting to doubt if it was that cancer at all. This may be a confusion with Kabosu (Doge) who definitely has had leukaemia. [1] I've lost count of all the mainstream media sources that have confused these two dogs' images and lives. I don't think there's any statement from the Balltze account that it was leukaemia.

2. Can we get a consensus from native-level Chinese speakers what "Balltze" means? Certainly when I search the symbols on Google images, I get marbles. Does the name mean marble or a small ball in general? Remember the dog is named specifically after the Ramune bottle. Unknown Temptation (talk) 17:02, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that's true and it's in the article and the infobox. Unknown Temptation (talk) 21:47, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
