Statistics

[edit]

The statistics seem to me a bit absurd. How can 98% of the population speak one language, and 34% speak another? That certainly envolves bilinguism, but to what degree? Shouldn't that be specified? That sentence, as it is, implies monolinguism. Someone with access to local statistics should clarify it. Rsazevedo msg 22:34, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The statistics are by no way absurd, they are the official statistic data (see: External links: population data). They say that Quechua is spoken by 98 %, which means that 2 % of the population do not speak Quechua. Spanish is spoken by 34 % of the population, which means that circa 32 % of the population is bilingual Quechua-Spanish. The official data are not any more specific as to what percentage is Spanish-Quechua bilingual, what percentage is Aymara-Spanish bilingual, what percentage is Quechua-Spanish-Aymara spoken etc. -- Meister (talk) 19:18, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
