The Clap
[edit]Does anyone remember 'the clap'? For many years (late 80's - early 90's?) right before the feature started at Century Theaters, there was a piece of music accompanying the theater rules. I don't know where or when it started, but a fair amount of the time people would clap in rhythm at key points of the music (clap-clap-clap - CLAP-CLAP-CLAP). There was an article written about it in the Merc (I think) and everything as it was a bit of a cultural phenomenon. Moviegoers in San Jose did this for years; it was pretty unique. Anyway, I have been trying to track down the article but not having any luck. It was a silly thing, but you knew if you went to a movie on the opening weekend, there would be a lot of people doing 'the clap'. I thought it might be something to be added to this entry, but perhaps only people from the Bay Area would appreciate it.

Funny, I was just writing about this very same thing for my LiveJournal. I used to go to the Century Theaters in Mountain View, near Shoreline Amphitheatre, and I remember the clapping phenomenon pretty well. It was during the "feature presentation" animation with the ticket flying around the lobby and into the theater. I remember that animation being used for years, but call the clapping didn't really start until around the early- to mid-90s. My friends and I used to do it all the time. However, not long after it reached its height of popularity, the theater was refurbished and a new animation was use that had brand new music that you couldn't clap along with. Anyone been able to get their hands on the "flying ticket" one from the '90s? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.164.95.212 (talk) 02:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC).
