Name
[edit]Apart from this page, Google turns up no references to "Cecilia Park", but plenty to "Cecilia Forest". I'm moving it to that name. Zaian (talk) 06:44, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Zaian, Cecilia Forest is (technically) a different forest, on a different part of Table Mountain. Cecilia Park is the Municipality's name (and SANParks name) for the separate patch, further to the south, which is described in this article. Please create separate article or maybe rather revert to the "Cecilia Park" name. For references, please see SANParks website. They're the conservation authority who manages these parks and it's probably best to stick to their naming system for synonym cases like this. S Molteno (talk) 07:45, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm still puzzled, and I think a page move is not appropriate without a proper reference to the new name. When I searched the SANParks website, the only reference I can see is a proposed "vision of the future" which refers to Cecilia 'Park' and doesn't make it clear that this is an official name. Google still turns up virtually no references to "Cecilia Park". Zaian (talk) 09:10, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Zaian, that is strange, because I can find plenty of references to the new name. They are mainly on the SANPARKS site, but that's understandable as it's a SANPARKS park. There will naturally be more references to the old name in google searches, as the new name is new. It's a case of an old (ambiguous) name that has now been changed, by the appropriate authority. As mentioned, this is because it isn't a "forest" which is clearly defined in Cape Town (it was a commercial plantation, that is now a park), and also because the name "Cecilia Forest" actually refers to the real forest that stretches from NW of Cecilia Park, all the way through Kirstenbosch, into the higher reaches of Newlands forest, and into the Groote Schuur estate. This was the property of Cecil John Rhodes, and that's why it's called Cecilia Forest. Please consider that sometimes the "correct" name is newer than the incorrect one, and that most people may still use the incorrect one. Think of how you can have a new, correct scientific name for a species, based on the decision of the relevant authority (ICN); the older name might be more popularly used, but that does not mean it is not misleading/incorrect/etc. Or just like the more popular city name "Saigon" becomes a redirect to the official name "Ho Chi Minh City", the page "Cecilia Forest" should be a redirect to the official name (or better still, a disambiguation page, that I'd be happy to write, if you'll please reverse your move). Thanks. S Molteno (talk) 07:25, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
