Hi, always good to see more editors writing about plants!

Just to say that when as at Gasteria excelsa, you write something like " a transitional form ... is now considered to be a separate transitional species", you really must include an inline reference, otherwise the edit will be removed. I'll gladly help if you don't know how. Gasteria loedolffiae is not in reliable online sources, like the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families, so who considers it a species? A single primary source is not enough for a species to be accepted in Wkipedia. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:31, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

I wouldnt rely on the world checklist - it's very old. This species was declared by Kirstenbosch & SANBI (Ernst van Jaarsveld wrote the paper) but as it's still early days I'm not going to create a whole page for it. Will add the paper as reference later.

WCSP is not "very old"; some parts are older than others, but it's continuously updated (as I've regularly found when returning to a species list added earlier and sourced to WCSP!). However, the point I was making is that we must use secondary sources as evidence for the acceptance of species, so the original paper can be a supporting reference, but mustn't be the only reference. I just wouldn't trust it as far as I can throw it when it comes to South African species! But fair enough, Check the sources underneath the text on that species in the article, and if they're not sufficient, then feel free to remove the text. S Molteno (talk) 09:50, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

The problem is that all secondary sources are necessarily "behind the curve" most of the time, but on the other hand once you start to use primary sources for new species, where do you stop? Anyone can publish a new species name in an obscure journal, a name that no-one else ever takes up. But I respect your intention to use reliable sources, and I'm certainly not saying that WCSP, TPL, Tropicos, GRIN, or whatever, are always right. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:02, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

As you seem to know about South African plants, perhaps you can clarify the confusion over SANBI. Currently this redirects to South African National Bioinformatics Institute, but surely it's much better known as an abbreviation for "South African National Biodiversity Institute", which doesn't have an article, but I think should have. Have you happened to have paid a visit to the Commons category for Francis Masson? It looks like there's quite a few of these species that don't yet have English articles, even though, oddly enough... they have ones in Vietnamese. Moving pages

Hi, when a taxon changes name, like Aloe variegata to Gonialoe variegata, and has an article under its original name, you should move the article, rather than start a new one and paste in text from the old one. This is because the history of the text of the old article is an important part of its copyright, and it's lost when the text is pasted. An administrator needs to fix the situation: see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Fixing cut-and-paste moves.

Steven, since the lockdown started last year I took it upon myself to cover some serious gaps in the Afrikaans Wikipedia's collection of fynbos. Suffice to say, we have passed the English Wikipedia with number of links to fynbos. I have also discovered how neglected/outdated SANBI databases are and rely more on KEW Plants of the World Online as a reference. To resolve some of my issues I have communicated directly with Dr. Tony Rebelo, Prof Ben-Erik van Wyk and Dr. John Charles Manning. These gents have been very helpful! iNatralist tool for Commons
