The result of the move request was: Moved to Cato (spy). (non-admin closure) Natg 19 (talk) 04:57, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cato (American Revolution)Cato (slave) – I'm a bit torn on this one. On one hand, the proposed title is more concise, clearly communicates that the article's subject is a person, and avoids other confusion: while it would be a nonstandard title, the current title makes me think of Addison's Cato and its influence on the American Revolution.

I can think of two decent points against such a move, though. First, it was not uncommon for North American slaves to be named after figures from antiquity (e.g., Hercules (chef)), so there were probably other slaves named Cato.[1] Second, it might be considered demeaning to identify him primarily as a slave. Counterpoints: he might be the only notable slave named Cato, and to not call him a slave might be considered a sanitization of the true history.

A third option presents itself: Cato (spy) identifies him by what he was actually notable for. I may be leaning that way, though I won't be unhappy if a good discussion upholds the current title. --BDD (talk) 22:19, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Notes

  1. ^ Stono Rebellion says that slave rebellion was led by one Jemmy, also incorrectly(?) referred to as Cato.

Agree with move

[edit]

I started the article under the title Cato (American Revolution). I just now saw the above discussion and wanted to add that I would have agreed with the change had I noticed the discussion while it was open. Donner60 (talk) 04:36, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Page look-over/rewrite

[edit]

I'm going to look over this page, check sources and attempt to center it more on Cato than on Mulligan. I'll work in my sandbox so please leave suggestions here. Will probably move chunks to the Mulligan page that aren't already covered there; any discussion on that is welcome. Tomorrow&tomorrow&tomorrow (talk) 17:08, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Conflating two people named Cato

[edit]

It appears that the Cato who was a courier for Mulligan and the Cato who was a military veteran are not actually the same person. Shoreranger (talk) 20:23, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
