July 2013 edit & reversion
[edit]According to article history, here, on 12 July 2013 User:58.111.72.113, removed the allegation that Killen was aiming at his commanding officer. The edit summary stated I have stated correctly that no reason or motive behind the shooting of Cathy Wayne was even given at the Courts martial of Sergeant James Wayne Killen. The media of the speculated that Killen was attempting to shoot his C.O., a major Simmons. This is inc. A reference was supplied citing "Record of Trail of sergeant james Wayne Killen obtained through FOIA". I have reverted this edit, my rationale is dependent on the official records stored at the National Archives of Australia (currently reference [2] in the article):
- See page 6 of 125, which refers to the third page of a "Report to the Ambassador on the Court Martial of Sgt. James W. Killen with Premeditated Murder of Australian Citizen, Miss Catherine A. Warnes on 20th July, 1969, at Marine Staff N. C. O. Club, Forces Reconnaissance Area, South-East of Danang City" by D. W. Milton (First Secretary). Specifically the report states "The prosecutor, by questioning, attempted to prove that Killen's commanding officer, Major R. E. Simmons was seated in the centre of the cone that the trajectory should have taken and that Miss Warnes suddenly moved into this line of sight and was struck by the bullet headed for Major Simmons".
- See page 11 of 125, 8th page of same report: "the prosecution counsel outlined the salient features of the case ... offered the following explanation of Killen's movements ... [Killen] drank the two cans of beer before attempting to shoot his Commanding Officer".
Using summary style and concision I wrote this as "it was alleged that he was aiming for his commanding officer, Major Roger E. Simmons" which appears in the Lead of this article. I do not assert that Killen was found guilty of this allegation nor that Killen made any admission of his guilt nor that he made any indication of his motive(s).shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 13:34, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Killen cleared
[edit]Research by Don Morrison has demonstrated that Killen was cleared at a second court-martial, held in the US, and was released after serving two years. Morrison's research has led to Malcolm Allbrook amending Warnes' entry at Australian Dictionary of Biography, in June 2015, and which now indicates that the shooter has not been identified. With reliable sources now supplied the article has been changed to reflect the situation.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 00:54, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

"murdered" vs "killed"?
[edit]@1.129.107.16: The second court-martial of Sgt Killen cleared him of unpremeditated murder and he was released. The actual shooter has never been identified in a court of law. Wayne was killed but we cannot establish whether she was murdered or not. I changed "murdered" back to "killed" as being more accurate in line with known facts.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 22:31, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Shaidar cuebiyar:. Yes, murder is a legal term. What happened to Wayne was a homicide. Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 01:06, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
