The USS Carondelet was named and commissioned in 1944. The Carondelet Reef had this name at least by 1937. Although sources list it as being named after its discoverer, this was obviously NOT the USS Carondelet, or the earlier US Civil War era Carondelet, which was a river vessel. Please check other Wiki articles on persons named Carondelet. It is quite possible that the reef was named for the ship Carondelet, but it may have been a ship of Peruvian or other nationality. I am still looking for the earliest mention of the reef, or a geographic referrence that gives a date for an official name. I would not be surprised to find that it dates to the whaling era in this area (1840's) or thereabouts. The nearby Winslow reef was discovered and named in 1851 by the Phoenix. I believe that this was the whaler out of New London, Connecticut.Pustelnik 01:31, 2 March 2007 (UTC)pustelnik[reply]
