Shoe Designer

Some mention should be made of the fact that he is also a shoe designer. http://www.carlosshoes.com/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.81.161.245 (talk) 01:05, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Recommendation

Something that isn't on the article is that Santana was violated by a man when he was living alone in Tijuana (his family was in San Francisco at the time) and that really affected him psychologically making him the man he is nowdays. For he has had many problems hes gone to therapies etc. to repair the damage that part of his life did to him.

Unless you have a reliable source, this rumor cannot be included in a bio article. Ronbo76 15:03, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
I read something like that too, I think it was an interview-article in Rolling Stone from the late 90ies. Whichever mag, I probably threw it away. Maybe it might help someone who archives these things... As far as I remember, C. S. stated that his spirituality only really emerged in the aftermath and that together with the music it was like therapy for him. Something to that extent. --89.245.68.148 (talk) 20:36, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Confirmation: A Rolling Stone article posted on their web site, entitled "Carlos' Cosmic Bummer," [1] discusses his molestation in the 6th paragraph on page 3. This web posting is a preview of the print article forthcoming in the October 18, 2008 edition. That 'graph also notes that the incident was reported in Rolling Stone nine years earlier. I also remember hearing him unexpectedly reveal this during a television interview several years ago. I regret that I cannot recall the program, but the RS articles should be sufficient verification. Article expansion

I've expanded the article significantly, including pulling over material that WikiDon wrote in the Journey article that was more relevant here. But the long stretch between Love Devotion Surrender and Supernatural is still very open; somebody else with more knowledge of that period needs to fill it in. Wasted Time R 18:09, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

I read the book that was written by Shapiro Carlos Santana written on the heels of his well-received 1999 album. I think the way he gained prominence was worth adding to the article. V Schauf (talk) 21:46, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Ethnic Backround

Can someone expand on Carlos's ethnic backround, from what i've heard he has some eastern european lineage in him. If anything it would be from Spain (western) and the Middle East (east and south of spain)

Time permitting, I am going to post new pages for all the albums & link this page into them. I've got all the main albums and a few of the compilations. I'm not going to write much of a review or notes for each album, just post the cover & track listings, if you want to write up the albums in more detail please help out ! Many of the albums have their own articles; I'm not keen on adding articles for every album — just for the important ones (as per the albums WikiProject). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Another random note; it reads here that Santana's father was a musician. I am 90% confident that his father played the trumpet. If someone could help out with sources, or believes this to be correct, please help. Meanwhile I'm adding it anyway, so feel free to delete if you feel this isn't appropriate.

>>>>>>>according to http://www.sfmission.com/santana/earlyears.htm his father was a professional mariachi violinist--Pz

A citation is needed, really. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I've taken out "bongos" from the "Percussion" heading. It's unnecessary, and besides, the bongos are secondary to any percussionist's gear. It's also worth noting that in "The Best of Santana" in the liner notes, they only refer to these musicians as playing "percussion", not "bongos". I think whoever put this in the title did so because of the common error of referring to "congas" as "bongos". Derekwriter 04:10, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

There really needs to be some mention of Graham Lear, Santana's drummer who was with him at least through Moonflower, and can be seen as a very young kid in the Woodstock footage.

Micheal Shrieve was the bands drummer at Woodstock. Lear didn't join the band until around 1977.

Does anyone know anything about his child hood? Where he grew up? I've heard that he grew up in California and in Europe, but does anyone know where I could learn more about this? Thanks 70.177.18.27 (talk) 07:32, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Hats and partial baldness

What is with the hats in the last ten years (late 90s, early 00s)? He has never appeared without a hat, even when performing indoors. Has he developed pattern baldness?

Actually, he does'nt really discuss that. It's just his style. Don't you think he can make it work though? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.35.20.149 (talk) 22:46, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Greatest guitarists

The paragraph about his placing on Rolling Stone's greatest guitarists is very confusing. On one list by Rolling Stone, he was #15, but a year later, he placed 90th on the same list? Im.a.lumberjack 16:06, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Orgasm by music?

I was told that he can give an orgasm by playing guitar, but that's probably just a myth or lie. Can we say anything about this in the article? Drewboy64 20:44, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, if there is a reputable source to cite, I guess. But it sounds odd to me, after all, Kim Jong Ill says he has written 50 grand operas and is the greatest military strategist since... well ever. I don't beleive it. But if Santana can really do that, I want what ever guitar he's playing:) :) :) Canberra photographer (talk) 13:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Please do not revert this part back to the les paul. He does not play the les paul, and never has. He used the PRS Santana guitar on the supernatural album. Santana was well known for using Gibson guitars in the early 1970's. Notably the Gibson SG, The Gibson L6-S, and the Les Paul. After all, he did have quite a career long before "Supernatural." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Myphxaz (talkcontribs) 12:03, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Unofficial Recordings

The unofficial recordings section was updated ages ago by me to include the official Santana management stance on these dubious recordings. Evidently these are being viewed as official releases as someone is preventing the removal of these from the discography section. Why are these gray area releases being promoted here?

76.171.163.95 (talk) 06:09, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for taking this to the talk page. From what I can see, these albums are not being viewed as "official" releases (hence the "Unofficial Releases" header), nor are they being promoted by their inclusion. Wikipedia regularly has articles on B-sides and bootleg tracks, and there's no reason to exclude them as long as their existence and notability is backed up by reliable sources. --jonny-mt 06:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Favourite Artists

'Santana helped the family out by working as a dishwasher and grew to enjoy the San Francisco music scene, often sneaking into music promoter Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium to listen to his favorite musical artists, including Muddy Waters, Guns n' Roses and The Grateful Dead.' This is 1965, people. Guns & Roses only formed 20 years later. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.169.161.23 (talk) 13:33, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Controversy?

During a June 2003 concert at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, VA, Santana referred to America as "Land of the free, home of the slave" to a chorus of boos from the audience. He made no attempt at an apology. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.34.27.50 (talk) 03:26, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

1980s

In the 1980s section, the 1982 single "Hold On" was mentioned, but no mention was made of the album Shango, where that song can be found. Furthermore, no mention throughout was made of Santana's unambiguous references to the Santeria religion within the context of Shango (specifically, the "Oxun (Oshun)" and "Shangó" tracks, and the album cover art). Although mention was made in the Spirituality section to Sri Chinmoy, and later to born again Christianity, I think the absence of the Santeria influence, especially on the 1982 album Shango is significantly remiss. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gregory.george.lewis (talkcontribs) 16:16, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Santana has never had any affiliation with the Santeria religion. The artwork and song titles on "Shango" are merely reflections of the music's Afro-Cuban roots. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Myphxaz (talkcontribs) 11:58, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Sly's Fillipina

The comment below originally appeared in 2010AD. The Neandathal who omitted cited it as "Unsourced" twice. As I've said, this is in the public record.

I'm a little confused, which is nothing when one tries to get their information off wikipedia.com As I remember, Sly Stone married this strikingly tall fillipina woman in 1971 or '72 in a raucus wedding held at Madison Square Garden to paying fans. On reading the Wiki history on both Santana and Sly, a female memeber of the " ...Family Stones" appears as the former wife of Sly and current wife of Santana! Her name is DEBORAH KING (SANTANA). Now this is r-e-a-l-l-y confusing, as the image of Deborah and this Fillipina woman (who at the time was sooo stateques she could've blown ALL of the 70s sick-figure models outta the water. This woman appears in Sly's album "SMALL TALK", her and him holding their toddler son.

Now if the Fillipina IS NOT Deborah King, then who is she, what is the relation between these two women to Sly, and why is there no info on this?

Also omitted from Wiki is the fact that while Sly was hospitalized shortly after his honeymoon to this asian woman, she bullied the the hospital staff into accomodating her demands to share a room with her husband by having a bed right next his. This reference I remember from Jet Magazines, which chronicled many exploits of black public public figures that usually were not covered in the "main-stream" press. Lucky them to be living in those times!

I like to get some feed-back on these matters, particulay Sly's wives, and this Madison Square garden thing, the latter not getting the kind of iconic reporting that lesser Rock stars get.

Much is omitted in recent, post modern history of pop culture. With black luminaries it's like classic NAZI disinformation and black-out.

Please respond, if you will.

Real Peace, and Later

P.S: I'm sure much of the information may be contained in Mr. Stewart's forthcoming biography and the movie documentary. But then again with Slyvester Stewart's notorious evasivness and neuroses, one can't be sure unless we demand the facts with the old 60s war-cry "UP AGAINST THE WALL!!!" --96.250.192.24 (talk) 05:02, 22 July 2011 (UTC)Veryverser

What nationality?

Can someone supply proof that Santana's official Nationality is Mexican OR American? In the USA, for people with one parent having American citizenship and the other having citizenship in another country, upon turning 18 years of age, we were told that the United States no longer accepted dual citizenship and that we had to choose which one as adults. Israel was the one exception if the person is Jewish. Thus, in the USA I am American, but in Brazil I hold dual citizenship. I am hoping someone can wade through that legal crap and find out what passport he uses, which would be the final proof. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 10:31, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

His official citizenship is whatever the US government and the Mexican government separately say it is. He was born in Mexico and became a US citizen by naturalization at age 18. That much is shown by article content. According to Mexican nationality law he didn't lose his Mexican citizenship on becoming naturalized in the US so he is still a Mexican citizen. He is also a US citizen by naturalization. So he is both by the laws of each country. According to "US State Department Services Dual Nationality" the US has no problems with dual nationality and apparently neither does Mexico.
However, according to WP:OPENPARA, the lede should mention only the country of citizenship of a person when they became notable. Since Santana has resided in the US since he was 18 and all his notable accomplishment were as a US resident, only his American citizenship need be mentioned in the lede and he can be considered an American musician. In past versions of the article he was listed as either a Mexican musician or an American musician and people kept changing between the two. Keeping both in the lede is an attempt at a compromise and it IS factually correct. Geraldo Perez (talk) 16:44, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I changed his nationality to Mexican-American from "American of Mexican ancestry" which I think was misleading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.23.214.4 (talk) 01:17, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

See WP:OPENPARA for what should be in lede. Ethnicity is generally not supposed to be there. Country of birth is also not generally in lede but that is a compromise from just saying American. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:21, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Geraldo, the fact that he became a U.S. citizen does not mean that he gave up his Mexican citizenship. Country of residence is irrelevant. He did not stop being Mexican because he became a U.S. citizen. Also, in English, when you say that someone is of "X" descent, it implies that he was not born there, so it is misleading to say "of Mexican descent" in this case, as he was born in Mexico. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.23.214.4 (talk) 09:26, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

His Mexican citizenship is not relevent to his notable achievements. Also Mexican American as described in that article just means Americans of Mexican descent. I originally had Mexican and American, which is what you are trying to say, but that didn't stick either. WP:OPENPARA just says nationality when became notable, so American is what should go in article. Rest of article fills in details sufficiently. Geraldo Perez (talk) 14:32, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
I put back Mexican and American as that is the correct way to express dual nationality. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:00, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Santana used the Gibson solid-body L6-s

Around 1975 (pre-PRS) Santana used the solid-body Gibson L6-S, and endorsed it in Gibson ads as his "rainbow." Designed by the late Bill Lawrence, the original L6-S had a rotary switch which provided all possible ways of wiring two pickups including the unusual out of phase series and out of phase parallel wirings (the reissue L6-S substituted various single-coil wirings of the individual pickups).

Infobox photo

Bad choice for the infobox. I strongly feel for biographies of musicians that there should be both a clear view of the performer's face with their primary instrument whenever possible. Just because we have a lot of pics doesn't mean ours have to be on top, or cramming all of them into an article (sorry... went off on that because now that D.C.has legalized recreational weed my brother seems intent on blasting music and denying me some sleep)! PS my punctuation has always sucked, yes. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 09:18, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

What nationality?

See previous discussion at Talk:Carlos Santana/Archive 1 § What nationality?

Putting in both Mexican and American nationalities in the intro sentence was a compromise because editors kept switching between the two. By the strict reading of WP:OPENPARA he is an American musician as all his notable activities occurred after he was naturalized as an American and his Mexican nationality was not a factor in this. His Mexican ancestry relates to his music and that is covered later in the lead section. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:46, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

[1], [2]. (N0n3up (talk) 19:48, 3 September 2016 (UTC))
@N0n3up: Wikipedia has its own manual of style that controls this, we don't follow the manual of styles of other publications - see talk page of article. We don't put ethnicity in intro, other sources do. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:51, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
I never said anything about ethnicity, I was simply stating his Mexican citizenship thus Mexican-American. You would be right if he abandoned his Mexican citizenship. (N0n3up (talk) 19:53, 3 September 2016 (UTC))
@N0n3up: Moved discussion from my talk page and replied here. Mexican-American means explicitly Americans of Mexican descent, it is an ethnicity tag, it does not mean currently a Mexican national so that info is dropped. If you want to drop his Mexican nationality, I am OK with that as his notable activities were as an American in the U.S. making him an American musician. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:03, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
The infobox is part of the lead section. Details about his birth location are prominent there. Geraldo Perez (talk) 20:14, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Needs source

Either a source for this should be given, or it should be replaced in the article when the album appears:

Santana plans to release his latest album All That I Am on September 13 2005, which will include guest artists Big Boi (of Outkast), Mary J. Blige, Black Eyed Peas, Los Lonely Boys, Sean Paul, Kirk Hammett (of Metallica), Khaled and Robert Randolph.

Acknowledge Mexican Nationality and Ethnicity

This is a new section in which we review the need to acknowledge Mexican nationality for a Mexican musician. This would normally be reflexive for an African American musician, but for Mexicans there seems to be quite a hesitation to assert to close a tie to Mexico. Perhaps, the current political climate is to blame? At any rate, this comment is to inform users that Carlos Santana should be referenced as Mexican since he was born there, lived there for years and is actually described as a Mexican guitarrist in the Mexican press and by fans colloquially. He himself vacillates between Mexican, Mexican American and Latino, but the more accurate term for historical purposes is 'Mexican'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BYOD Xicano (talkcontribs) 15:01, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

First of all, please consider the previous discussions in the archives. It will demonstrate that a consensus was reached. Secondly nobody is denying his Mexican ancestry. It is mentioned throughout the article. It would be very strange not to. The issue is, as was highlighted before that he became a US citizen at the age of 18 and much of his notability occurred after this. That complies with MOS:OPENPARA I would like to see an example of an African American musician who is referred to as such in the WP:LEDE. Please do not revert, further and respect the consensus that was reached a while ago. Karst (talk) 15:17, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
Karst I did not concede to agree to such edit. I only left the discussion to not lose any more valuable time with so called "politically-correct" people who in fact aren't that correct in many aspects. I believe the memo should be Mexican-American. (N0n3up (talk) 17:24, 7 September 2016 (UTC))
@N0n3up: It has nothing to do with being politically correct, but with avoiding further reverts. And this has been an issue in the past. By using Mexican-American it will be interpreted as pointing to his ethnicity. That means that other editors unaware of the previous discussions will feel the need to revert to either Mexican or American under MOS:OPENPARA. As happened yesterday. Personally I have no preference for either (I'm from the UK), but a clear consensus, perhaps through RfC should be reached here to avoid future conflicts. Karst (talk) 06:58, 8 September 2016 (UTC)
I support N0n3up resolution. Mlpearc (open channel) 17:48, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
He is a dual national based on birth and naturalization. Not really contentious for that part. Generally only put nationality where achieved notability in lead but both being acknowledged seems a reasonable compromise that has worked for many years. As before, Mexican American and Mexican-American are ethnicity descriptors that make him a type of American, which while true, are descriptions of his ethnicity, and reduce in importance that he is also a Mexican national. Explicitly stating Mexican and American put the nationalities as equal weighted adjectives for musician. Geraldo Perez (talk) 15:51, 8 September 2016 (UTC)

Dual nationality

Irrelevant to the discussions above, I'm only concerned that the manner to describe his dual nationality is "Mexican and American" rather than "Mexican-American". Both terms seem to be grammatically connected either by "and" or a dash seems to not have any link to ethnicity and both can describe his dual nationality equally as efficient as the first. I'm only posting this since most biographic articles of living people seem to follow the first form of mentioning dual nationality rather than putting "and" between them. Unless I'm missing something here. (N0n3up (talk) 06:17, 16 January 2017 (UTC))

Mexican-American, per that article, is an ethnicity defined there as "are Americans of full or partial Mexican descent". We don't put ethnicities in the context part of the intro per WP:BLPLEAD and defining him as Mexican-American effectively drops the fact that he is also a Mexican national which the and between the nationalities makes unambiguously clear and gives equal weights to both his nationalities. Also discussion at #Acknowledge Mexican Nationality and Ethnicity highlight the importance people place on his being Mexican and a descriptor generally used in the US for all Americans with any sort of Mexican ancestry no matter how distant completely removes that. Biography?

Why is there a heading called "Biography?" The whole article is a biography. Wouldn't it be better just to jump right in with the headings "Early life" and "Early career" etc... If there are no objections, I will change this in the future.

Suspect error in Early Career section

The article implies that Santana filled in for Butterfield in 1966 at the Fillmore West. There was no "Fillmore West" in 1966. See Wiki article "Carousel Ballroom".2601:602:9A00:3D30:8596:95E9:6870:D182 (talk) 18:01, 8 May 2018 (UTC)

Awards and nominations

Carlos Santana has won multiple awards, not just Grammys. List of awards and nominations received by Santana includes a list of Carlos Santana's accolades, but since the list is supposed to be about accolades received by the band Santana, the awards received solely in Carlos Santana's name could be moved to the Awards and nominations section, which currently includes Santana band Grammys. That would free up this list for Santana band-only awards (probably too many to move to the band article). Chrisnait (talk) 19:10, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Carlos on mescaline or LSD while playing at Woodstock Festival 1969

Woodstock Festival, 1969. Mescaline is the main active ingredient of peyote.

Carlos Santana's autobiography, 'The Universal Tone,' recalls days of Woodstock, drugs, racism and music. By Jim Farber, Nov 03, 2014. New York Daily News. From the article:

As Santana reveals in his excellent new autobiography, "The Universal Tone," out Tuesday, Jerry Garcia had offered him a hit of mescaline, and he gulped it right down, thinking he'd have time to come down before his set.

He might have, but promoters needed Santana to go on right away because so many other bands were stuck in the horrific traffic.

"It was like trying to grab a bar of soap that keeps slipping through your fingers," Santana tells The News of his playing that day.

We’re two years away from the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. If there’s a reunion concert, would you participate?

I plan to do something with [his current band, with his wife], hopefully part of the original band, and also with Larry Graham. So I might be coming to Woodstock with three bands. Fifty years went fast, but now I feel even younger and more clear, and I have more energy and more conviction than back then. That [1969 Woodstock] was basically some of the highest I’ve been in front of so many people. To peak with LSD or peyote in front of 400,000 people, you almost have no control of anything.

I don’t imagine you’ll be doing peyote at the Woodstock 50th.

I’m not afraid. Seriously, I’ll do it if you do it.

I am not sure Carlos Santana knows what was given to him by Jerry Garcia. His 2014 autobiography says mescaline. In his 2019 Youtube interview linked farther down he says acid.
Carlos Santana Reveals Favorite Woodstock Memory. June 27, 2019. From JamBase. From the article (emphasis added):
Garcia then offered Carlos what he referred to as “some of this” in the Town Hall discussion but noted was a hit of mescaline in his 2014 autobiography The Universal Tone.

Copy page as a draft

Going through different maintenance categories I stumbled upon a draft Draft:Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán (created April 27 of this year), which seems to be a copy of this article -- glancing at the career section alone -- and the talk page has been copied as well. How should we proceed with this duplicate? Rfl0216 (talk) 22:01, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

I tagged the draft article for deletion as a pointless copy of this page. Geraldo Perez (talk) 22:23, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
