Move from Carlos Cruz (Portugal)
[edit]- Support definately should not be "(Portugal)" - however, not entirely sure whether "(TV presenter)" is commonly used, will check! --Lox (t,c) 09:14, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Page has been moved to Carlos Cruz (television presenter)! --Lox (t,c) 16:04, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
Notable paedophile?
[edit]Answering anonymous editor's edit summary here, as suggested.
If we were to rewrite this article from an anglocentric point of view, it might indeed be along the lines of 'CC is a former Portuguese TV presenter who is now a convicted paedophile.' The list of TV programmes would be irrelevant bathos. But I think that would lower the tone to a tabloid level. Cruz was put here because he was a TV presenter; most paedophiles don't get into Wikipedia unless there is another reason for them to be here.
But, you could argue, most anglophones had never heard of him. Sure, I was living here when he was on TV a lot (such a lot!), but that's not most anglophones' experience. But I prefer an encyclopedia to deal with the main reason for notability first. I think it is no coincidence that the Portuguese version leaves the paedophilia out of the intro, reserving it for the last four paragraphs, even though there will be many young people here who have heard the news but who never saw his television shows.
Now if he'd committed murder as well... Rothorpe (talk) 20:52, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
Cheers for the positive atitude. Well, I can understand your point of view, to be honest. Yes, fact is, during the majority of his life he was indeed know as a TV presenter - which he no longer is, so I suppose we can agree on the issue of "former presenter" there.
But fact is, the Casa Pia scandal recieved international coverage - much more then any of his shows ever did, from a non portuguese standpoint, and greatly so because of his previous notoriety. In fact, throughout all of the court proceedings for this case, Mr. Cruz was the most proeminent defendant (arguido, I believe it has no literal translation). In fact, I believe that in the present day, he is all together the more notable for his involvement on the trial rather then his TV shows. From my own point of view, as a young portuguese man who watches television on a regular basis, Mr. Cruz's notoriety was estabilished with his crime, and the media coverage of said crime. He was a very visible, notable defendant. Thus my edits.
I reckon paedophilia is just as bad as murder, friend, if not worst. The dead person doesnt remember the crime commited unto them for as long as they live. Anonymous Editor —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.129.204.70 (talk) 04:11, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with 'former', and, for the rest, have taken a cue from the Gary Glitter article. Considering the conviction is pending appeal, how about the current wording? Rothorpe (talk) 15:50, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
