History decades separations
[edit]There are problems with some of the subsections under which the decades are organised. There is a subsection - "1.3 1960s to 80s: Campus turmoil and football mediocrity" in the 70s 7 out of 10 are winning seasons. So the decade does not fit under this title. On the other hand, there is a subsection called - "1990s: A brief return of football success." There were only three winning seasons in the 90s. Any thoughts on these issues and how they can be addressed?Rybkovich (talk) 22:44, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Separation the 1960 to 1980s history subsection. I added allott more information to the 1960s subsection section and am separating it from the 1960 to 1980 subsection. Now there are to subsections "1960s: A decade of political change and football underperformance" and "A rise in the 1970s but another fall in the 1980s".Rybkovich (talk) 16:09, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Taking out some of the Tedford Era subsections
[edit]I think it will be best to remove some of the tedford history subsection dividers. 2005, 2008-2011 have a single paragraph in each subsection. Having so many subsection and thus taking up allot of space makes the "tedford era" way longer than it should be - it takes allot of space in a subsection that is in regards to 100+ years. Same amount of information can be conveyed in allott less space, making it allot harder to scroll through and get past it. How do we feel about this? Rybkovich (talk) 17:07, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
- I decided not to do that. Rybkovich (talk) 23:25, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Idiot editors
[edit]you know, the reason people dont trust wikipedia is because of idiot editors like the ones that put all sorts of promotional crap in the lede. its exhausting cleaning up after you. put down the red plastic cup of beer, pull out your strunk and white, and try editing like a man, not a frat boy.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 23:32, 18 June 2016 (UTC)
football years redirects
[edit]Hi @UW Dawgs: @Corkythehornetfan: @MisterCake: I pinged editors who have previously contributed to the article and wanted your input on the issue.
Recently there were redirects created for the previous seasons' navbox references to uncreated seasons articles. Previously, because there was no article that the references was made to, the year was in red font. Now, because of the redirect, the season appears in blue, as if there is an article. If clicked upon the reference loops you back to the golden bears football article that you are in.
The problem is that now, one cannot tell if there is an article for a season or not. Let's take 1956, a memorable year in Cal history. It was Pappy Waldorf's last season and had one of the most memorable Big Games. Previously when I was looking at the navbox I saw that 1956 was in red, which told me that there was no article. Because of this I put the creation of the article on my list. Now, because of the redirect, the season appears in blue as if there is an article that is linked to. One can no longer tell if there is an article created for the season or not, which makes it less likely that this article would be created. Also, now that there is a redirect when one does click on a redirected year, it takes one to the top of the article that one is at, which is confusing.
Because of these problems, I think we should go back to how it was before and take out the redirects. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Rybkovich (talk) 19:14, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- I say take the redirects to WP:RFD. The standard is to have red links so that it will notify users that an article needs created. I'll ping Jweiss11 for his input. Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 20:38, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- RFD sounds fine. Best option would to go and Stub these out. Jweiss11 (talk) 22:35, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Eras
[edit]Hi @UW Dawgs: @Corkythehornetfan: @MisterCake:@Tvc 15:@BusterLuster:
Hi, on March 10th 2019 we had a subcategory change going from periods of time and recent coaches, to deleting most of the periods of time and making "era" subcategories for each coach following the 1950s. Per google an "era" is "a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic." Given the meaning of the term we are now using it incorrectly. I don't think we should have each coaching period titled as an era, furthermore I don't think that every coach should have their own sub category. Some coaches' periods should not be considered to be significant enough to have their own sub categories given the overall summary context of this page. I think we should go back to coaching periods, perhaps having era subcategories for Andy Smith, Pappy Waldorf, and Tedford. For recent, past Tedford coaches I guess we can keep the subcategory but take out "era" from the title. What does everybody think? Rybkovich (talk) 00:16, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- PS it seems that user BusterLuster who made the changes is now blocked.Rybkovich (talk) 00:19, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- Agreed. Pre-2000s subcategories based on eras are more appropriate than subcategories based on individual coaches. Separate subcategories for Andy Smith and Pappy Waldorf are not necessary because the "Wonders," "Thunders," and "Pappy's Boys" already incorporate these coaches. Post-2000, it seems appropriate to have the Tedford, Dykes, Wilcox eras, etc. Thanks, Tvc 15 (talk) 00:44, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- I think this is more of a Wikipedia:WikiProject College football issue rather than just one article. I’d like to see a consensus there among members who haven’t been tagged here to voice their opinions. Corky 01:10, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- The "First Last era (YYYY–YYYY)" convention is in near-universal use throughout the project, see List of NCAA Division I FBS football programs. You can find RS citations using "era" immediately at hire and even after the conclusion of 1-year tenures ending with dismissal. I'm in favor of consistency and reflecting what the RS states. And I don't see any issue within MOS:SECTIONS. Agreed that multiple and brief tenures can be combined where reasonable, especially wrt WP:RECENTISM. Quick examples:
- Given the sources I agree with leaving eras in the recent coaches' subsections. Rybkovich (talk) 01:47, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
"Very long section, maintenance" tags Tedford, Dykes
[edit]@UW Dawgs: @Corkythehornetfan: @MisterCake:@Tvc 15:@BusterLuster: and all other editors that contributed or are interested in this article. The "Very long section, maintenance" tags have been put up by UW Dawgs. Initially on the Tedfor subsection, and on the Dykes subsection following my adding of more info to it. I believe that suggestion for removing content, should be first discussed here, before a tag is entered in the article. After contacting UW Dawgs, I understood that their editing decision was made based on UW Dawgs view that the history section is specifically a coaching history section. Based on that I can see how some information can be superfluous regarding a specific coach, however the History section is not specifically regarding Cal's coaches it is regarding the program as whole. Thus some info that may seems irrelevant is actually not. I suggest that before the tag is put up the issue be first discussed and addressed here as opposed to calling for deletions without any consultation. I will again go through my contributions and double check that all of the info is appropriate to the section and will remove it if not. I am hesitant to remove others' contributions without an appropriate discussion here. It takes editors time and effort to research, write, edit their their contribution, as we all know it is work, literally. I believe that calling for deletion of the product of that work without first holding a discussion is disrespectful and will likely discourage future contributions. I know this from personal experience. The last thing Wiki needs is a decrease in number of contributions. So it will be very helpful if we went over the two sections and discuss if any info can be considered as superfluous and may be deleted/transferred. Thank you.
