prestige

[edit]

I suggest deletion of "prestigious" from the first line and the substitution of "has played a prominent role" for "has always been a vital factor in the second. See comment at Category talk: Traditional gentlemen's clubs. -- 45ossington 16:25, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of unsourced, subjective claims

[edit]

An anonymous editor at the IP address 38.98.44.98 (which unsurprisingly devolves to an IP address in Los Angeles) has reverted my removal of the following sentence under the heading "Present clubhouse": "Among other features, the club is noted for its architecture, furnishings, fine cuisine, extraordinary wine list and impeccable service." Perhaps 38.98.44.98 is unfamiliar with Wikipedia policies, but that sentence is incompatible with them on many levels -- not least of which because no source is given for the claims, and because it reads like a press release. (In what possible way do they propose to objectively demonstrate that, for example, the service at the Club is "impeccable", or the wine list "extraordinary"?) I will remove it again, and if it is reverted a second time, I will apply for page protection. Until then, it would be a good idea if 38.98.44.98 both learned about WP's editing policies, and signed-in as a legitimate user before making reverts. Bricology (talk) 18:12, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Further attempts to wikify the article

[edit]

I've removed one of the non-conforming statements made in the article (see above), but there's more work to be done. To wit: the second paragraph of the lede begins "There is an old adage that goes..." -- a claim that is both unsourced and weasel-words. Also, the last sentence under "Present clubhouse" begins "In addition to fine antiques and handcrafted furniture... This reads like advertising copy and is completely inappropriate in an encyclopedia. (Who says that the Club's antiques are "fine"? How do we know that their furniture is "handcrafted", and who says that "handcrafted furniture" is superior to factory-made furniture?) My guess is that language like this was added by someone connected with the Club, rather than gleaned from a reliable third-party source. Either way, it needs to be removed. I'll give the editor who added it the opportunity to re-write it to conform with WP standards. If that doesn't happen, I'll have to remove it myself. Bricology (talk) 18:23, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Bric, if I may be so bold. You make good point, but the way I handle stuff like that is to just be WP:Bold, make the fixes and see if anybody objects. I'm not sure why you are not doing that, but everybody has a different way of editing, I suppose. Yours in Wikidom, BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 22:36, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
