Not Rift Valley
[edit]A rift valley is produced by a spreading apart of the crust caused by the separation of tectonic plates and vertical (normal) faults, not the action of a single sliding fault. Perhaps the Calaveras Valley is a pull-apart basin, similar to a rift, but then it must share responsibility with another fault, perhaps the San Andreas. We need more info, refs.
