Water parcel, water parcel, water parcel, water parcel ... ok, seriously, if we use a word that often, we maybe should explain what the heck it means.

It is a test volume sufficiently small that it is uniform in composition. The idea is found across classical physics, such as a 'test mass' or a 'test charge'. Cabbeling is not necessary reliant on diapycnal or isopycnal mixing. There are some very limited observations (Antarctica) of cabbeling occurring at the peaks of internal gravity waves, where the pressure drops within a matter of hours. Non-reversible changes in salt dissociation equilibria can occur merely by alterations in pressure. Temps must be within a degree of freezing. Even though adiabatic heating occurs while the test volume (i.e. "parcel") sinks many hundreds or thousands of meters below its original depth. Sinking from brine build up in polynyas is generally not considered to be cabbeling. The trick to cabbeling is that the final water parcel winds up being denser than any of the additions. This can only happen when all parcels are close to freezing. The chemical reactions are usually termed as non-linear but a better word is hysteresis, following engineering practice. The state of the seawater parcel is dependent on it previous history, and is not given exactly by a simple state equation, such as JPOTS.220.245.40.163 (talk) 12:33, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
