Caribbean Cup/Championship?

[edit]

For the 23-24 season, CONCACAF revamped the structure of the now called Champions Cup. Similar to how the tournament was once the Champions Cup, then Champions League, now again Champions Cup, should the Caribbean Cup as this is now called be considered different than last year's Caribean Championship? I believe they are the same tournament with just a different name and this the pages for this tournament should be merged - it is the same competition with updated branding 155.201.150.21 (talk) 11:43, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, its the spiritual successor, but not the legal successor. The original Caribbean Championship was organized by the CFU, while the new competition is organized by Concacaf. They have been referring to this season as the inaugural season (unlike the CONCACAF Champions Cup), so unless they expressly state that its a proper successor, they are seperate tournaments. This tweet from Concacaf shows all they champions from all versions of the Champions Cup, but I have yet to see anything similar in regards to the Caribbean Championship. To counter some of your points, organization of the Club Championship had already been taken over by CONCACAF so in that regard, no change from 2022 to 2023.
Also, as a primary source CONCACAF is not the be-all end-all source for information. They are in the business of marketing sports so they may do stuff like create an "all new competition" which is just an existing competition, renamed. For example, CONCACAF had considered their Champions League to be a new competition that replaced the Champions' Cup with 2008-09 being the "inaugural" tournament.[1] Your linked tweet suggests that CONCACAF have now changed their mind which is why on Wikipedia we don't follow exactly what their marketing says directly. Fair points! But if it is ever decided to merge the two competition pages, I suggest a full revamp. The old Caribbean Club Championship page feels a little dated and has minimal prose for a 25+ year old competition. Nobreadsticks (talk) 03:14, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
