Question
[edit]Lklundin changed my edit with the edit comment: Unit conversion to non-SI is acceptable, but let's not change the original units. 13 cm has two significant digits, 130 mm has three, which is different). I don't understand why it is different in the context of this article if 13 cm and 130 mm is the same length? At the same time, it is an industry standard to report the diameter of cables, pipes etc in millimeters, and by other sources the diameter is reported in millimeters (e.g. [1].) Beagel (talk) 13:26, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Beagel: Thanks for getting back to me on this. My edit of your edit has to do with two things, both related to the fact that this article is on a highly technical topic. 1) Yes, 13 cm and 130 mm is the same length, except one is given with a 10 times higher accuracy, see significant figures. It is certainly preferable to specify electrical cable diameters more accurately using millimeter, we should just have a source supporting that increased level of accuracy. So please feel free to go ahead and do that. 2) Because of the highly technical nature of this article (and its supporting sources), we should use proper SI-units, as opposed to just pluralized nouns. I am unsure that conversion to non-standard units used in a single country unrelated to this article is useful, but if we accept that conversion is OK, then it should be via the template 'cvt' which preserves the SI-notation as opposed to 'convert', which per default changes the units away from SI to pluralized nouns. Thanks. Lklundin (talk) 13:45, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
- The source for 130 mm is provided in my first comment above, so I understand this issue is resolved. The second issue is, if I understand you correctly, is that in the case of SI units you prefer abbreviation instead of the naming out the unit. In this matter I will disagree with you but leaving this matter beside, there is really no need to change {{convert}} with {{cvt}} because {{convert}} has an abbreviation option (the default is the full name for the original unit, abbreviation for the converted unit, but you can change it for both abbreviations or both full names or what ever you prefer. You can also change it from plural to singular, if necessary). Beagel (talk) 14:21, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
