Brampton Coal Staithe?
[edit]Should this be staithe or staith? Although both spellings exist (see Talk:Stockton and Darlington Railway), staithe and staith have rather different etymology and meaning in this period. In other cases, staithe is a wharf in East Anglia, using an old Norse word. Where new staiths were built in the NE for coal loading, the word was staith, without the e. At Brampton, this was a staith (in the coal loading sense), but was it spelled with or without the e? Andy Dingley (talk) 11:13, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
