Bognor, Jamaica?
Is there really a place in Jamaica called Bognor.?This is the 2nd time an unnamed user has added it and wiped out any reference to the English town.Vandalism.?I don`t know Jamaica so I want to be sure before I revert... Andycjp 7.5.2004
- Much searching has resulted in not a trace of the supposed Jamaican Bognor. The juvenile nonsense of the entire addition ("no-one is allowed in our out and if someone dies, someone has to born to make up for it") suggests that it is indeed pure vandalism devoid of facts. -- A Bognorian that really should create an account 14:56, 19 May 2004 (UTC)
Thanks I was too cautious.I used to live in Bognor myself, hence my interest.Andycjp20/5/04
The article seems very disjointed and somewhat POV. Perhaps someone with more interest might do something to improve it? Peter Shearan 06:06, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
claremont ? great undiscovered pub ? we all know its there we just choose to ignore it on account of it being a dive.
Panda Free
Does it really need to be there?
Yes, it does. Weebls-Stuff is a well known site and the latest cartoon has a major reference to Bognor Regis.
- I was questioning the statement's encyclopedic value. It is written as if it was a fact.ParsifalTG
- Anyway, I've changed the wording.
"Bognor Regis has also been mentioned in the cartoon Cucumbers by a well known website Weebl's Stuff, where it was cited as being "Panda-free" "
If there are any objections, please state them now or we can consider this issue resolved. ParsifalTG
I still can't see the relevance to a page about Bognor, a link back (from Weebl's Stuff) to these pages might well be in order but not an external link out, sorry. (SouthernElectric 17:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC))
- Reference removed, just because something has been mentioned in print, TV, or website it doesn't mean it should be within an encyclopedia, as I said above, the 'fact' might be notable (and that, IMO, is still debatable) to the article about Weebl's Stuff but that doesn't mean that it's notable to an article about Bognor. Picture
Do we really think the picture of an ambulance crew attending to a stricken resident is really representative of Bognor high street? Should it be deleted or replaced with something more apt?
I agree, do we really need to see some poor person who is injured, I do not personally believe it shows much of the High Street either, it is basically just an ambulance. (Spiritofsussex 08:47, 29 August 2007 (UTC))
I agree, the picture either needs changing or deleting (SouthernElectric 12:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC))
- I've replaced this image now, with a 1947 OS map from within Wiki for now, hopefully a better image will be sourced. (SouthernElectric 23:46, 10 October 2007 (UTC)) Up dated / edited 00:06, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
The original contentious image was added back in by the owner. I have removed it again in concord with this discussion. W33v1l (talk) 07:50, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Transport
Not sure why the A27 is mentioned, the road does not pass through the town and is thus not a direct route into the town, perhaps it would be better mentioned within the comments regarding the A29 which it crosses at Fontwell
- Now included within the description of the A29. (SouthernElectric 22:56, 14 September 2007 (UTC))
Also, mention should be made regarding the mid-sussex railway route, the Arun Valley Line , as many trains from Bognor to London are routed via that line. (SouthernElectric 12:06, 10 September 2007 (UTC))
Birdman
"This Year" Birdman was cancelled - what year? I think the specific year should be mentioned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.9.69.203 (talk) 12:03, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Origin of "Regis" in Name
According to the PBS video, The Windsors: A Royal Family, when King George V had recovered from his illness, and was ready to leave, a group of town officials came to him with a request that he add the term "Regis" to the name of the town, so as to commemorate the fact that he had stayed there. The King's flunky (private secretary) went to see the King about it, and the King, being a typical self-absorbed royal, could not be bothered, and said "Bugger Bognor." At this point, the flunky, realizing that his job was to cover up for the King whenever possible, went out to the town officials, and said, "The King is graciously pleased to grant your request." Thus, since that time, the town has been known as Bognor Regis.
John Paul Parks (talk) 00:34, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- The usual story is that "Bugger Bognor" were his dying words some years later. -- Beardo (talk) 17:55, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
- It would be useful to get this resolved, if possible, or else state both possibilies in the article. The current wording in the article is ambiguous. The King stayed in Bognor only for several months until he felt better. Then he left and continued living in ill health for about seven more years. Note: this same abiguity can be found in George V of the United Kingdom#Death. David spector (talk) 13:49, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
The year that Bognor acquired parish status
In the history section, the article says Bognor was made a separate parish from Bersted in 1828. According to this site: http://www.localhistories.org/bognor.html Bognor became a separate parish in 1873 Angleshades (talk) 01:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Merge Proposal
Guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements state that ideally the civil parish (Bognor Regis should be the catch-all article, avoiding single line articles on every village and landmark within the parish.
Therefore, I suggest villages within the parish (South Bersted) to be merged and redirected to Bognor Regis. ++ MortimerCat (talk) 00:54, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
No, South Bersted, Pagham etc. pre-date Bognor by 600 years. South Bersted must stand alone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.148.117.105 (talk) 13:10, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Apollo - Soyuz
Is this really notable:
"The historic meeting of the crews (and associated handshake) of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project on 17 July 1975 was supposed to have taken place over Bognor Regis, but a flight delay caused it to occur over Metz in France instead."
-- Beardo (talk) 17:55, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Reference to Butlins Holiday Camps
Should there be a change/wondering how best to fix last line in second paragraph of article:
Now reads "One of the main contributors to the success of Butlins, the company has repositioned its site towards more luxury hotels and accommodation."
Suggested change to read "[Holiday camps having been o]ne of the main contributors to the success of Butlins..."
I can only guess this is the intended meaning of this line. If this statement refers more to holiday camps in general and not specifically to the one at Bognor Regis, then should the information be omitted in this article and moved to the page about Butlins which already exists?
DooberEdit (talk) 02:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)DooberEdit
- I have reworked that section to something that makes sense I hope. It was undue detail for the lead section of the article anyway.--Charles (talk) 09:01, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Jane Austen/Sanditon reference
Reference to Jane Austen describing Bognor Regis in her unfinished novel Sanditon appears as second sentence in very first paragraph on the page. Two questions: (1) since it appears uncertain if Bognor Regis is the basis for fictional Sanditon, or another town (see page on Sanditon), perhaps this could be reworded appropriately; and (2) should this reference be moved from first paragraph on page to a separate subheading under Culture, perhaps Literature?
DooberEdit (talk) 19:51, 26 May 2014 (UTC)DooberEdit
- I have mentioned it in the history section with a reference and moved it down the lede saying it is a claim rather than a fact. Hope this is an improvement.--Charles (talk) 21:55, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Bognor Regis Pier
Noticed that there was no existing article for Bognor Regis Pier (uniquely amongst extant piers in England), so pulled a brief one together from a couple of external sources, and material taken from other existing articles. Any locals (or indeed, pier enthusiasts!) who can help expand it, your efforts greatly appreciated. Grunners (talk) 21:56, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
fixing reference errors
I've again restored a reference definition used in this article. The definition "MetOff" is a verifiable source for the data in the climate table, and it looks like the data is correcly copied. Even if it weren't, simply removing the definition isn't the right fix as the reference definition is used more than once in the article. Removing only the definition and leaving the references behind makes visible errors in the article's "References" section.
Further, leaving the data unreferenced means it's not verifiable and therefore not acceptable for inclusion in the article. Should the climate table be removed completely? -- Mikeblas (talk) 12:56, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Mikeblas it is reasonable to include a table where there is an actual weather station rather than interpolated data. Other settlement articles near the weather station may then link rather than use tables which are not theirs. Alternatively I would be happy just to keep the text allowing those interested in the detail to access the table via a citation.SovalValtos (talk) 13:39, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Indeed, it seems like a good goal to keep the table. I've updated the URL to point directly at the data here so that a search isn't necessary. How do we tell if the data is interpolated? The heading seems to indicate it's straight from an actual station, and not interpolated from observations at other locations.
- One of the reemovals indicated that the informatio nwasn't in that source, though, and I just don't see what's missing. -- Mikeblas (talk) 14:03, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Mikeblas in the case of this settlement there is a weather station. For other settlements in the UK, checking on the Metoffice list of weather stations to see if there is one, will show if data is genuine, or interpolated or synthesised from those stations nearby. For those settlements without a station a link to the section in a nearby settlement with a station should suffice. If another approach is used involving synthesis then clear text would be needed to explain that educated guesswork was involved.SovalValtos (talk) 18:53, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
