[edit]I've started a BeBop Deluxe page. I'll link it to this one. Anyone want to fill in some details? I don't think it needs to be filled with lots of trivia; I don't know the rules on how trivial an entry is allowed to be. But I've noticed some very long entries about minor things. The Aqua Teen Hunger Force is incredibly detailed, and its longer than Jeff Beck's entry. Just sayin'. Steppenvalve 17:35, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! However, there is also a page at Be Bop Deluxe, so I've merged their content and altered your page so that it redirects to the other page. The group's name is spelled with a space between the "Be" and the "Bop" on my CD, so I think the other article needs to be the permanent one. I also altered the text to try to keep to NPOV standards. Ahkond 01:39, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
- I couldn't find an entry on Be Bop Deluxe, so I created the new one. You are correct about the spelling. I thought I tried them all. I don't know how to do this, but is it posible to create entries for every misspelling and link them to the original article? Sometimes Be-Bop is hyphenated in the press, sometimes part is in capitals, e.g. "BEBOP deluxe" (no space) on the cover of their live album. I don't know if all this is necessary, but if I'd found the original page I wouldn't have created a new one. Thanks again, Ahkond. Steppenvalve 03:26, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, it is possible to create those other pages; they're called "redirect" pages and I altered your article for BeBop Deluxe so that it would work that way when I made my changes. I also created another for Be-Bop Deluxe at that time because it seemed like a good idea. Try to go to those articles and you will find yourself re-routed to Be Bop Deluxe automatically. You can read about redirect articles in the Help section, here (feel free to create more if you think of any other likely misspellings). I think the reason you didn't find the one for "Be Bop Deluxe" in the first place was that it didn't exist yet; yours was first (sorry I didn't grasp this previously). However I still think that that should be the "real" article and the others should point there. Ahkond 14:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- I just found another Be Bop Deluxe page @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Be_bop_deluxe . Only difference in the links is the capital letters. Dunno what to do about that. I'll look it over and see if I can merge it, but it was started by the same guy that started the other page mine was merged with.Steppenvalve 06:17, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- Good grief. Thanks. I've replaced it with a redirect because it was basically the same text as before (but with more spelling errors and opinions). Ahkond 15:07, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Producer
[edit]I have a few Skids singles which credit him as a producer (more on that here); he may have produced other acts as well. This is worth including. Totnesmartin (talk) 16:09, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]While I find this to be an exceptionally well written piece of prose there are two problems with it which mean it cannot be included yet.
- No references. The piece needs further references to support the claims made.
- The piece appears to be written like an essay, containing possible OR and puffery.
For these reasons I have moved it here to await refs and reducing of the peacocking.

Bill Nelson has been a profligate musician, recording and releasing over eighty albums/cds so far in his career. It is a an indication of his musical genius, that despite the quantity of output, the quality has remained stellar and most unique.
While his earlier guitar based rock n roll music is enjoyable and always interesting, it is his lyrics at this early stage in his career that impress most. To wit a common love song such as "Heavenly Homes" (from the "Sunburst Finish" LP), is imbued with so much more including philosophical underpinnings such as the concept that there is no perfection in an imperfect world, expressed as "Heavenly thoughts in heavenly minds, are not the world's design."
His brilliant guitar work was unlike any others, although he could play in the styles of many of his contemporaries, as examplified by songs like "Crying to the sky", a wonderful song with soaring guitar riffs that would easily be mistaken for Jimi Hendrix. Rapidfire notes would flow like water easily wandering through a melody transporting the listener across tempo changes and styles such as the "Modern Music Suite" from the LP Modern Music. Rock, disco and love ballad all conglomerate and are stronger for the juxtaposition rather than weaker.
This brings us to yet another amazing aspect of his career, having reached a point where he could have become a guitar god ala Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page, with amazing chops and a genuine style all his own, Mr. Nelson walked away from guitar based music and became a keyboardist and abandoned Rock N Roll altogether, instead focusing on an ambient style of music that was only beginning to be explored by the likes of Brian Eno and others at this time.
This move surely puzzled his fans and many certainly were no longer interested in his later work. Those that stayed with him and the new fans who found his work largely by chance, since it received almost no radio play, were rewarded with an amazing musical journey that remained fresh and interesting as he explored many sensory perceptions and wrote the book for those to follow.
It is these many, many works spread over 3 decades that will truly set him apart from his contemporaries from the 70's rock scene. He is indeed a unique charm that has expanded the musical language in ways that we are only beginning to perceive now. Genius seems to be too small a word to describe what he has accomplished.
What follows is a brief look at his career, decade by decade.
I hope that something can be done for this as it is one of the better pieces of writing I have seen on here in a long time :¬)
Lastly I hope it is not any sort of copyvio. If so it would have to be completely removed of course. Chaosdruid (talk) 04:30, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

attention: critics of the references (or lack thereof)
[edit]While the critiques are actually quite pleasant-done here, I (for one) do wish to assist to make this yet another great article. If you could (sincerely!) concretize your crtitiques as concern the entry, I will do my best to attack-- I mean, address them.
my conceit: Nelson has been a cool guy to me online, half a world away, and my experience with his fans has been remarkably genial. Therefore, I stand ready to do as I can to sort out difficulties. This seems (to me) one of the better-sourced bits, so I am puzzled by the confusion, but pleased to work toward equanimity.

- You'd have to provide a RS to address any issues - not your personal interactions whatever they may have been with Nelson.50.111.35.97 (talk) 10:59, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

a few thoughts
[edit]- It's a bummer that there is no Channel Light Vessel article, yet the members are covered.
- Should there be a "personal life" section to mention his family? The info is rather buried, albeit at the beginning of Career.
- The infobox has a few "associated acts" that reflect more on Nelson's whimsy than identify musical groups.
- Speaking of which, is Matt Howarth an "act"? If so, shouldn't Real Men With Ray Guns also be mentioned? (Or whatever it was he called his graphic-design project; I don't have the CDs at hand.)
- Also per the list, is there any way to separate out those bands with which Nelson was primarily a musician, and those where he was producer? His career has had such breadth that the boxout looks overwhelmed.

Children of Bill Nelson
[edit]Date of birth is incorrect for Julia nelson please correct to 1974 82.6.40.199 (talk) 20:47, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- The current source is page 152 of Music in Dreamland: Bill Nelson & Be Bop Deluxe by Paul Sutton Reeves (2011), but this is not available online. However, AllMusic here also says it was 1970? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:18, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
