American 2006 Olympic team
[edit]Michael "Moose" Votta will be providing full coverage of the U.S. biathlon Olympic team for Stats, LLC. --Anonymous
How about a 'Top 30' table
[edit]Do you think it would be a good idea to add a table with a list of the biathletes for each country, maybe just the top 30 in the world cup rankings, or maybe more comprehensive? --Anonymous
- Hmm, perhaps we should add two tables: one 'historic' ('all-time great' biathletes) and one 'contemporary'? Keep in mind, though, that detailed information is easily obtained in the World Ch.ships, Olympic medalists, and World Cup winners articles, so in any case I think the general biathlon article should only have one or two concise tables. --Wernher 18:39, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
Pictures
[edit]This is not an American olympic Page! Pictures of athletes from more than one country would show some internationalism. --Anonymous
- The Wikimedia community would be happy if you'd take some pictures of a biathalon and release the photographs under the GFDL or a similar license and upload them to Commons, so they can be used here and in other projects. It just happens that the US biathalon team is pretty much completely made of members of the US military, and these photographs of them were taken by US military personal during the performance of their duties, thus the images are public domain. These images are a matter of using what is available, not of supporting a particular team. I just thought that actual photogrpahs of fairly recent biathalons was better than a stamp of what a biathalon looked like decades ago as an illustration for this article. Blind Biathlon
[edit]If anyone knows anything about, it would be great if they could mention something about biathlon for the blind. All I know is that it exists. --Anonymous
- AFAIK, blind biathletes use an audio based aiming system in order to hit (hopefully) the targets---headset sound level increasing in inverse proportion to the aiming point's distance from the chosen target's bull's eye (i.e., the closer to the target, the louder the sound). As in XC skiing, blind biathletes have individual seeing assistants skiing together with them through the ski track. --Wernher 09:11, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
International Pictures
[edit]Unless only the USA Olympic team competes in the Biathlon, which is not the case, more pictures of biathletes from a variety of nations and nationalities are required. -Anonymous
- Apart from the inherent systemic bias of Wikipedia, there is actually a good reason for all those pictures of US athletes (see 10 m Air Rifle for another example of the same phenomenon). They are here because these images are owned by branches of the US armed forces, which release all their photographs into the public domain. Finding free photographs of non-US biathletes is more difficult, that's all. If you should happen to stumble across one, don't hesitate to add it. Nobody is wanting this article to contain images of US biathletes only. -- Jao (talk) 12:45, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- I have a few pictures of non-US athletes that I can offer, like the one I added to Frode Andresen, but they're not nearly as good nor as clear as the ones here. I was at the 2002 olympics in a good spot to take pictures but with a very low resolution point-and-shoot camera. The U.S. Army pictures must have had professional gear, they look tremendously better. I share the concern of a US athlete bias on this page, but I think the higher quality photos are more important than correcting the bias. But if others disagree I'm happy to contribute my grainy shots like the one on Frode's page. Please check it out and comment here if you like. Or just add Frode's picture here if you'd like. What about some of the photos though already on other pages like Uschi_Disl, Sven_Fischer, and Ricco_Gross? - Owlmonkey (talk) 17:24, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
.22LR is not 5.56mm
[edit]google image it, or better yet, wiki it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.23.63.148 (talk • contribs) 12 June 2006
You're kinda correct, at least in that the .22LR is actually 5.63mm diameter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.237.176.155 (talk) 06:51, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
What controversy??
[edit]This whole section will be deleted. There is no references, is far to biased, and uses weasel words. Perakhantu 09:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Broadcasting too prominent
[edit]I have moved the broadcasting discussion to a section of its own. It was too prominent up front, looking more like "names dropping" (by the "main" sponsors). The section before the Contents should summarise the most important facts. 84.144.99.145 (talk) 10:43, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with the reasoning. It would be nice to have more interesting content in the lead paragraph but just a list of companies is a poor choice. One thing that was lost with the change though was a sense of the countries where the sport is popular. We should consider adding something about that back to the lead paragraph perhaps. Anyone else have an opinion on that? - Owlmonkey (talk) 18:30, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
External links
[edit]I removed an external link http://www.chocomanisawesome.ca which went to a non-existent site. Also, whomever added it to begin with didn't add it in proper format.--68.164.190.252 (talk) 22:51, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Downgraded classification
[edit]Downgraded this article from B Class to C Class. While it is fairly complete from a content view, it is greatly lacking citations and thus does not rate B status. Safiel (talk) 07:16, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

What type of sights?
[edit]Would be nice to mention the type of sights allowed in the competition. I am assuming iron sights only, but I am not sure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.23.217.91 (talk) 01:00, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- http://biathlete.org/equ.html says mechanical sights, no optics. I didn't add it to the article but anyone is welcome to. 74.215.41.73 (talk) 17:28, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
pursuit rules unclear
[edit]This sentence: The biathletes shoot on a first-come, first-served basis at the lane corresponding to the position they arrived for all shooting bouts. is not very clear. What is the meaning of "the lane corresponding to ..." here? Are contestants required to use the same lane for every shooting component (which seems to present significant possibility of biased results)? Do they simply join a queue for a lane when arriving and wait until the contestant in front finishes (also potentially biasing results)? Do they wait for the first available lane after arriving in a single queue (seemingly the most "fair" setup)? The "... for all shooting bouts" part of that sentence is particularly confusing. Could someone who knows the rules please clarify? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.62.93.205 (talk) 05:29, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
It looks like much of the content is from (or was copied to) http://www.biathlon.be/rules.html That page seems to imply that there are 60 lanes for shooting. Is that correct??? Seems like a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.62.93.205 (talk) 05:33, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Nordic Skiing?
[edit]Our articles are thoroughly inconsistent on whether Biathlon is a form of Nordic skiing. This article makes no mention of Nordic Skiing in the text, but includes it in the Categories at the bottom. The Nordic Skiing article briefly says Biathlon is a form of it before largely (but not entirely) ignoring it, and the Nordic Skiing at the Olympics articles all omit biathlon. Could somebody who knows more about it than I do please suggest what the correct approach should be to making our articles consistent. Tlhslobus (talk) 07:57, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
- In Norway it is always treated as a non-Nordic form of skiing. As far as I understand biathlon is not even part of FIS. Biathlon is not part of the nordic world championship. Odd perhaps that XC skiing with rifle shooting is not Nordic along with basic XC skiing (some Norwegian athletes even switch between the two). The Norwegian encyclopedia of sports mentions 2 branches of competitive skiing: Nordic and Alpine (biathlon is not mentioned as something separate). I don't think biathlon should be regarded as a Nordic style. --Erik den yngre (talk) 16:51, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

IBU new Logo
[edit]As a representative of the IBU I would like to change our old logo on this page to the new logo that the IBU uses since 2016. However I am facing issues because of rights. Can anyone help with this matter and explain me also how to remove the old logo?
Thank you very much in advance for the expertise to a "newbie" in the Wikipedia world — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biathlonworld (talk • contribs) 10:31, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Broadcasting
[edit]Hi Dem1997. You appear to be knowledgeable about this topic. Nonetheless, I reverted a removal of content describing broadcasting companies that cover the sport, because the edit was unexplained. Upon reviewing the one reference given for the paragraph, I find that it supports none of the entries, except for Eurovision. Perhaps you could take some time and identify which companies' participation is supported by references and omit those entries, which are not. Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 13:39, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
Removed links
[edit]Hi Radiohist, I removed the following links, calling them "junk links", which removal you reverted as unexplained. Here's an explanation for each. If you find them credible, perhaps you could revert yourself. See WP:LINKSTOAVOID.
- Veltins Biathlon World Team Challenge This appears to be an ad for a specific event. If we allow this, then all such events should be posted here in a directory.
- History of Biathlon This material perhaps could stay, although it would be better to summarize it and use it as a reference.
- UPDATE: I have added material in the "History" section, using this as a reference. HopsonRoad (talk) 16:53, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
- Biathlon history (in Russian) This dead link was in Russian and didn't belong in English Wikipedia in the first place.
- Popular Norwegian site (in Norwegian) This so-called popular site is so popular that it's a webarchive. It's in Norwegian and doesn't belong here.

Why still keeping the militaristic live firearms?
[edit]I think this article should explain why biathlon hasn't changed to the use of laser (xenon flash) weapons modern pentathlon style, instead of keeping the lethal (.22LR) firearms. Costs associated with maintaining live-fire rated ski ranges, accident insurance premiums and the general complications arising from pro athletes having to travel around the world with lethal firearms must surely be tremendous? Considering the weakening interest in hosting recent Winter Olympiads and the geographical retreat of winter sports as climate warms, certainly any measures that lessen the financial burden and make a winter sport more available to a wide base of junior / amateur / hobbist participants shall be much welcome. 94.21.154.43 (talk) 20:02, 25 December 2020 (UTC)
- If there is such a discussion of alternatives among authorities, connected with the sport, and reported in reliable sources, then it belongs in the article. You are welcome to provide such information here, if it exists. If it doesn't exist, then it's only a personal point of view and belongs neither in the article nor in a talk page. Sincerely, HopsonRoad (talk) 20:24, 25 December 2020 (UTC)
