- Link is not dead, restored original link (keeping archive link) but was not able to report the false positive (may have been whitelisted already). -- Black Falcon (talk) 17:56, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
Merger proposal to Belgian First Division B
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- To not merge on the ground that the leagues are distinct and independently notable. Klbrain (talk) 19:58, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
It appears to me that Belgian Second Division is not a distinct topic from Belgian First Division B. The articles, as well as this source, seem to suggest that the league underwent a restructuring and renaming in 2016, and not that they are entirely separate leagues. If that is correct, then I propose merging the articles and covering pre-2016 information in the new article's 'History' section. Any thoughts? -- Black Falcon (talk) 17:36, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose. The overhaul of the second division was more than just restructuring and renaming, but more importantly involved a move towards professionalism. Not only is it now a strict split between professional and amateur teams, also it involves a formal list of requirements to obtain the Belgian professional football license, mandatory for teams to take part at this level. They are very much distinct competitions, but I agree that this could be highlighted more clearly. --Pelotastalk|contribs 20:34, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
- Support (conditional) – At the moment, I feel that the Belgian First Division B isn't a separate league. However, that's based on the only source on the page(s) that detail the changes that occurred; implying that's it's a restructuring rather than a new league being created. If we can bring about sources that confirm that the league is distinct from the Belgian Second Division, then I'd switch my position to oppose. Clyde1998 (talk) 10:55, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- The Belgian Second Division stopped to exist in 2016 due a completely new system in Belgian football the system looks as followed
- Profvoetbal 1A (Belgian First Division A)
- Profvoetbal 1B (Belgian First Division B)
- Eerste klasse amateurs (Belgian First Amateur Division)
- Tweede klasse amateurs (Belgian Second Amateur Division)
- Derde klasse amateurs (Belgian Third Amateur Division)
- then you have the provincial divisions
- Knowing this fact i don't think a merge is needed as it isn't a normal name change but a change in the whole system to the Belgian Second Division can be seen as a defunct competition in the Belgian Football system. Grottem (talk) 12:33, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- If that is the case, it would be helpful as User:Pelotas suggested to clarify within the article that these are in fact distinct leagues. Currently, the article text suggests otherwise. Do you know of any sources which highlight this distinction? -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:39, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose. Though they both constituted the second level in the Belgian football league system, they are actually distinct leagues. Just like the Premier League and the Football League First Division, which were both the top-level in the English football league system at some point in time, the former is a successor to the latter.Tvx1 18:41, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose per Tvx1. Despite both are considered as the second level in the Belgian football league system, they are distinct leagues. Ben5218 (talk) 00:31, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
