Controversies
[edit]Discharge from Belews Creek power plant affects water qualityA local television station reported on elevated levels of a potentially dangerous toxin that are being added to the water supply of Madison and Eden from this plant's discharge. The substance, trihalomethane, according to the EPA, poses a cancer risk: “Some people who drink water containing total trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL (safety limit) over many years could experience liver, kidney or central nervous system problems and increased risk of cancer.”
Environmental concerns persist at Belews Creek plant: The ash basin was cited by the N.C. Department of Natural Resources in a recent lawsuit: “Seeps (have been) identified at Defendant’s Belews Creek Steam Station, which include engineered discharges from the toe-drains of its Ash Pond.”
Groundwater has been found in recent years to have levels of chromium, iron and manganese above the state’s maximum allowable limit, according to the lawsuit, which includes Duke Energy’s fleet of power plants statewide.
The permit for one of the ash basin’s outfalls does not require monitoring for several elements known to exist on coal ash waste, and it does not set limits on several of the elements for which it does require monitoring.
Duke Energy's Belews Creek Steam Station was noted as impacting underlying groundwater above NC standards for arsenic, cadmium, selenium and nitrate and are polluting surface water, due to leaching coal ash landfills. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeschmed (talk • contribs) 22:00, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
