Again, on languages

[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}}

Please note that the languages section is outdated: German, French, Italian, Dutch and Spanish versions are available, as you can see in the home page clicking in the bottom right corner. I suppose the previous change could be OK if not removing notes, something like this:

Change this old text:

It can be used in many countries including Ireland, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. A Polish[1] version was launched recently, which uses a different user database. There are plans for French[2] German[3] and other versions.

With this new text:

There is now tailored content targeted at UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ, US English and US Latino, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and India, with the site being available in English, French[4], German[5], Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish[6].

Bebo

[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}}

Bebo was founded in January 2005 (the acronym "Blog early, blog often"[1]was later applied after it was 'made-up' by founder Michael Birch in an interview). There is now tailored content targeted at UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ, US English and US Latino, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and India, with the site being available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish. Bebo was founded by husband and wife Michael[5] and Xochi Birch, Bebo had a major relaunch in July 2005.[6] Bebo was later acquired by AOL for m in May 2008,

The information in relation to the acronym being made up is correct. This was confirmed by Birch on BBC Radio - The Bottom Line on the 30th June 2011. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.243.253.107 (talk) 03:26, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Profiles

[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}}

Profiles may include quizzes which offer multiple choice, polls for their friends to vote in and comment on, photo albums which allows the user to upload an unlimited number of images with a maximum limit of 48 per album, blogs with a comments section, a list of bands of which the user is a fan, a list of groups that the user is a member of. A 'Video Box' may be added, either hot-linked from YouTube, uploaded directly to Bebo's servers via Motionbox or copied from a Bebo Media Content Provider's page.

Members can view the recent changes friends have made to their homepage from the 'Home' menu. These changes can include uploaded photos, updated flashboxes and newly added videos, or what their friends have been doing on Facebook, Twitter, Flicker and other services if those friends have linked those accounts to their Bebo one friends. A map feature enables members to see who has being viewing their profile. However, the viewer must be logged in while viewing and have their profile set to public in the map section, in order for this to be possible.

Done though I have slightly tweaked the content: These changes can include uploaded photos, updated flashboxes and newly added videos and friends. A friend's updates to Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and other services can also be viewed, if those friends have linked those accounts to their Bebo profile. Please let me know if this is not acceptable.
In the future, could you please make it more clear what changes you would like to have made? It took me a couple of minutes of comparing the two texts before I spotted the altered sentence. Thanks! Maedin\talk 12:07, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Open application platform

[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}}

Please replace Open application platform

On November 1, 2007, Bebo announced that it will join OpenSocial, a set of common APIs for building social applications across the web. It announced plans for a developers platform and said it will make a further platform announcement on November 13, 2007. This platform announcement turned out to be about the Bebo 'Open Media Platform' and not a true API. Bebo's Developers Platform was launched in early December 2007 with just over 50 applications.

New Zealand privacy breach

[edit]

NOT SURE WHY THIS ONE INCIDENT GETS A MENTION - EITHER SOMEONE SHOULD INCLUDE ALL SAFTEY INCIDENTS OR NONE AT ALL

On May 21, 2008 some users in New Zealand were temporarily given full access to other users' accounts.[15] Various users logged in under their own account were switched over to the accounts of other users at random intervals, some people gaining access to over 20 different users' accounts. People were sometimes given access to addresses and phone numbers of other members, and some took advantage of the situation by uploading pornography onto other members' accounts.[16] Bebo network engineers traced the error to a mis-configured proxy server in an Internet service provider (ISP) in New Zealand, which was later fixed. The ISP seemed to be interfering with its cache, thereby causing some of its customers to receive cached cookies and details from other users, likely because the ISP used dynamic IP addresses. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BeboKnowledgeable (talkcontribs) 09:52, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bebo Mobile

[edit]

{{editsemiprotected}}
Source claims that Bebo Mobile is often used by spam bots! This is actually not true! Can you remove this please. PS: Working for Bebo Mobile, therefore I know! ;-)

Thanks,

Done Welcome and thanks for contributing. We cannot use information you have from first hand experience to counter a well-sourced claim, but that claim has no source, so I removed it. Cheers, Celestra (talk) 15:33, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CEOP Protection

[edit]

Bebo has also introduced the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) button in its web site. This will help children and teenagers to escape bullying and child grooming. Children suspecting the intention of the sender, can click on this button which will re-direct them to a specially trained CEOP officer. They can get help from the officer or use the 10 other links which provides the details about local police and child helpline. This facility has been implemented for the users of UK to provide the safest possible environment.

Failure to mesh with AOL software

[edit]

What nobody seems to have mentioned so far is that when AOL acquiared Bebo, they told AOL users that their personal profile information would automatically be moved to Bebo. It didn't work. Most of the tools for searching the old AOL member database were eliminated, and many features of Bebo did not work in conjunction with AOL. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RogerInPDX (talkcontribs) 01:44, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, my own AOL profile, and some others with which I was familiar, did transfer over to the site, though the layout was odd: the personal information was in a second "About Me" module that didn't exist on regular Bebo profiles. You're right, however, when you point out that the AOL member-search tools no longer worked with the Bebo profiles. (I can't really put this anywhere in the article because it's "original research," i.e., my own life experience.)71.183.14.143 (talk) 16:34, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

'Decline' section

[edit]

Should we have a section on Bebo's collapse in the latter half of 2008 due to all the spam and unsolicited friend requests etc? It seems to be universally accepted that this is why Bebo fell, in particular when one particular online dating site started to flood it with spam during that summer... <span style="font-size:

Roleplay Section

[edit]

Is wikihow now a reliable source? I think this whole section constitutes original research, but I don't want to launch an edit war with whomever is protecting it. I'd appreciate opinions. Chris (talk) 20:19, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is petty popular, I would link stuff from Bebo, but somone said that's not good enough, what is good enough so I can find it. Because whoever said it was ALMOST half of bebo is underestimating, it's really pretty big. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bumblefly1995 (talkcontribs) 19:25, 5 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It does not meet any Wikipedia sourcing criteria. These policies state that as it is crap with no remotely appropriate sources, it should and must be removed. 222.155.201.232 (talk) 22:22, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It may need to be rephrased and cleaned up a bit so it's filled with less trivia, but deleting the entire section is unnecessary. 80.176.135.130 (talk) 18:45, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CCP?

[edit]

Under the section about it being rebought, it mentions CCP, this is the only mention of such a company. Can somebody clarify what this is for me? KeonSkyfire (talk) 04:15, 9 July 2013 (UTC) EDIT: Nevermind. I didn't see it before. Adding a (CCP) after the company name.[reply]

source for all the BEBO spam I used to recieve, where can I find a source!!

[edit]

I used to get spam from bebo back in the day whenever someone new signed up. Very annoying indeed. They way they structured their site and tried to recruit new members was pretty dodgy... "someone is talking about you", "your friend wants you to chat" all that kind of nonesense. No wonder they had so many users ... everyone who joined seemed to have their mailing list used by bebo to recruit!.... I can't find a source but It did used to happen. Here is an old email from 2006...

Hi I'm using a service to share my photos, please click below to connect with me and see all my photos: [link removed]

Bebo also has full profiles with a lot of fun features, try it and let me know what you think.

[name removed]

The person would have no photos or a profile picture. Or the quiz one

I've written a quiz 'Some stuff... enjoy.' on Bebo. Click below to answer the questions and see how well you do: Trying to get you to sign up when you followed the link.

No source except my emails from 2006!!

Removal of Criticism and Controversy section in November 2007

[edit]

In November, three paragraphs, which each included citations, were removed from the "Criticism and Controversy" section of this article. No explanation was given at the time and the sections were never restored. Here is the record of that removal.

I'm noting that deletion here because I plan to come back later and adapt the deleted material and add it back into the current article. To me, the section has historical value as it marks some milestones in the use of social media by groups of people in different ways.

Feedback welcome on re-adding this section from others. - mennonot (talk)
