South Park
Surely something more should be mentioned about the South Park parodies of Barbra.
Why? That's surely something for the South Park page. --natz 08:18, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- Disagree, as it shows her enormous influence beyond into a deep loud imprint on popular culture jewish, whether positive, negative, supportive, or jealous. Even other supposedly iconic stars or singers, even first-name megastars who have forayed into acting, don't have this kind of impact. Thus I'd recommend a Pop Culture section, but perhaps hold off on it to include both positive and negative, so that it doesn't come off like a token spiteful stab by unprofessional editors. Until that time, South Park is 11th on the "what links here" (for experienced users of WP)).Santaduck 08:22, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
I second that motion (to include popular culture section) Drew 02:20, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Me too, even if it is mostly negative, this is supposed to be unbiased, is there any other 'influences on pop culture' that couldbe added?
- How about the Cawfee Tawk skits in Saturday Night Live, where the Mike Myers/Linda Richman character is also referencing her? (And in one skit, she actually showed up as a surprise SNL guest.) Also, the movie Waiting for Guffman has a line where one of the characters, praising Corky, says "he can sing AND direct AND produce...and the only other person who can do all that...is Barbra Streisand." 64.132.218.10 22:25, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- The SNL skit is noteworthy in that it involves a personal appearance, and it was a recurring skit. References to her in dialog of a movie seems less noteworthy but certainly can be referenced in a pop culture section. As to the South Park episode, it definitely should be mentioned, but no more than other pop culture references. Streisand is not loved universally and her criticisms should be noted. Also, aside from the Godzilla reference in South Park, they also used her face as "Spooky Vision" in one of their Halloween episodes, which emphasizes the Streisand/South Park connection. Now if Streisand were as big as the Catholic church, I could see it being less than noteworthy, but there are hundreds of articles on Catholocism, and I am sure one or more of them reference the South Park view on Catholics, but unless there is a separate article like Barbara Streisand and popular culture, this information should be here. In general, Wikipedia files miscellaneous trivial cultural references away and doesn't include them in the articles. It appears in many cases that the reasons for this are BOTH that the information is unimportant trivia, of which there is an ENORMOUS amount if you include every cultural reference to Barbra Streisand, AND the fact that the included references seem to be biased by partisans of particular items, trying to claim more territory by being connected to more different items. The South Park fandom seems to be particularly excessive at this, inserting South Park references into any article about anything or anyone ever mentioned on South Park. The very fact that there are special Jesus (South Park) and Satan (South Park) pages should say all that needs to be said. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.17.178.36 (talk) 20:44, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Who her husband?
Could someone quote a source for the statement that Barbra Streisand is now married to Barry Dennen? I'm quite prepared to believe it, but I can't find any mention of it on her fan sites or anywhere else for that matter. Deb 19:05, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yentl and Prince of Tides snubs
Yentl wasn't nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (although Streisand wanted it to be). Prince of Tides was the movie where she was nominated for producing the best picture but was not nominated as director. 02:12, 22 July 2005 Syd Henderson

- Don't think that has to do with neutrality, but with the fact that this is not part of her own work / biography. This page should be about the person who's name is on top of the page, not how others approach him/her. Also, the idiotic way in which this article has been vandalised recently with utter non-sense has probably caused the opposite radical clean-up effect within Streisand supporters... --natz 08:21, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

- I agree. Talking about her being "snubbed" for Oscars is POV. You either are nominated or you aren't. Talk of "snubbing" is subjective. Some mention also of her rather long and protracted and unsuccessful suit against the guy who took pictures of her house for coastal studies would also be an interesting inclusion. social anxiety?
Has Streisand ever suffered from social anxiety disorder? Or was it just stage fright and anxiety? Gflores Talk 19:47, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- Would be just straight forward stage fright, same as what many performers suffer from. --natz 20:44, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Why did my additions get deleted?
I am very livid that someone removed the additions I made to her music bio last night. I didn't make anything up, I fleshed it out a bit. I added in FACTS (not rumors) about parts of Streisand's 70's and 80's output, only to find it removed in the morning and not only that, get a nasty message calling me a vandal?
Why am I a vandal for recognizing "Putting It Together: The Making of The Broadway Album" a TV special, which it was?
Why am I a vandal for pointing out that she had top 10 dance hits with "Shake Me Wake Me" and "Night Of My Life"? If you don't believe me, check it out yourself.
Why am I a vandal for going into a little detail about a few of her albums, such as "Guilty", "Lazy Afternoon" and "Memories"?
Why am I a vandal for talking about her failed attempt at MTV pop stardom with "Emotion"?
I spent about an hour fleshing some of the stuff out last night only to rudely find everything I put down. I am very offended and ticked off because I didn't do a freaking thing wrong.
To me, the vandals are the people who deleted my work just to be jerks. I am a Streisand fan and it ticks me off that my work gets deleted (umm... you don't get the time back?) because I thought the "Music Bio" on her was lacking and wanted to add more.
Hello. I haven't seen your contributions, so I can't weigh in on either side. I'm just writing to comment on how poorly this article is written and organized. It is a shame to Wikipedia. I'm not a rabid Streisand fan, nor one of her equally rabid critics, but this article is terrible: 1. Skeletal in size and scope. Absurd that a singer and actress of this importance (whether you like her, hate her, or are just interested in reading an encyclopedia article about her) is treated so cursorily. Check Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald; the differences are appalling. That is to say: This article should have, at a minimum: (1) A detailed history of her career, films, TV appearances, and most importantly, recordings, with appropriate links; (2) a brief summary of her personal life; (3) a brief summary of her effect and place in contemporary culture, and (4) some comments on miscellaneous and anecdotal nature. Someone, please, re-do this article in an unbiased way, free from POV or outrageous statements either pro or con. If you don't, I will take my life in my hands and be compelled to try. 66.108.4.183 16:43, 13 July 2006 (UTC) Allen Roth

Spelling?
Barbra or Barbara? This article seems to switch back and forth with no consistency. I know she changed her name, so I can understand referring to her as Barbara up until the point that happened, but the intro, and any subsequent discussion of her career should have Barbra, no? Thoughts? RRB 09:17, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
- In court documents filed in May 2003 in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles (Case No. SC077257), she is identified as "Barbra Streisand". Most Wikipedia biographical articles seem to use the approach of giving a person's most common name or stage name, then followed by "born <birthname>", but otherwise using the stage name or current name consistently throughout. —QuicksilverT @ 05:12, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Weasel words?
I'm kind of new, but I saw what I think you call "weasel words" in a couple places. One is under Film Career, specifically the part "snubbed for Best Director".
"There was controversy when Yentl received five Academy Award nominations but none for the major categories of Best Picture, Actress, or Director [3]. There was more controversy when Prince of Tides received even more nominations, including Best Picture, but Streisand was snubbed for Best Director."
Another one under 2006: The Return, specifically the use of "unfortunately" seems not very neutral:
"In early October, after a skit that made fun of President George W. Bush, and a man yelling taunts at her, she said, "Shut the fuck up if you can't take a joke." Unfortunately some present heard it differently, and say the man was yelling words of support which Ms. Streisand misheard or misinterpreted as heckling."
And also under Personal Life, specifically the use of "temerity" seems not neutral:
"On October 10 2006, she swore at a fan who had the temerity to ask her to perform rathar than spout Bush hate speech."
What do you think, are these a problem? Chuva 17:17, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

religion not important
i had to remove the reference to her family being jewish. it isnt relevant. Keltik31 16:42, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree. She would not have done Yentl otherwise. And her background is reflected in her political views. Her Jewish background has had a huge influence on her life. 66.151.81.244 17:39, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Do we mention the religious background of everyone? When I saw the Biography of Henry Winkler, they mentioned he was Jewish about four or five times. Is there something extra special about being Jewish that makes it necessary? I saw many episodes of Biography that never mentioned the person’s religion. 205.147.247.50 22:05, 1 November 2006 (UTC)205.147.247.50 22:06, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Keltik31 22:55, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
I don't really care one way or the other too much, personally I'd put it back in. But I just want to put up for consideration the religious / ethnic haziness that exists with the special case of "Jewish." While one doesn't always mention someone's religion, we would be more likely to reference their ethnicity. The fact that Barbra Streisand is Jewish is well known, frequently noted, and reflected in her professional history. It's not like we are saying "John Smith, who by the way is a big JEW, ..." If there was a list of "famous jewish performers" who would be at the top? Sadena 23:56, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- She is listed in the List of Jewish American musicians and the List of Jewish actors and actresses, so aparently her Jewish heritage is important. It should be categorized rather than a list, though. Oh, and Paula Abdul is first because it is alphabetical. Bytebear 05:17, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
Her religion is Important as much as Guandi's religion was important. her religion influenced her life and actions for example: Barbra Streisand's first Broadway role was in the "Diary of Anne Frank" That was important. I think she would be proud of being referenced as a famous "Jewish" person as much as I could be referenced as a Christian.Ace ofgabriel 15:26, 30 December 2006 (UTC) 30 December 2006
The fact that someone would say that religion is not important seems a bit ignorant. Is there any citations for the reasoning that it wouldn't be than that should be brought up. A number of articles do talk about religion in terms of biography. Just because on media outlet chooses not to highlight the fact that he or she is Jewish, Christian, or whatever doesn't mean we here at Wikipedia should follow suit. I mean if this person is an ethnic Jew than it should be mentioned because in reality part of Wikipedia is not to confirm what we already know, but to have the reader learn something new. There should be a section on how religion has influenced her life. Mr. C.C. (talk) 07:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Barbra??

- Because it's her name as noted in the third paragraph of this article. --ElKevbo 00:17, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- She changed her name from Barbara to Barbra early in her career - I always found that very clever. It is a bit of waste of a vowel, after all. --natz 20:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Politics
User:JoshuaZ's recent edit about the Media Research Center's Barbra Streisand Political IQ Award for Celebrity Vapidity was removed as "vandalism and section unsupported by any citations". But the events described really did take place. See the www.mediaresearch.org site, and subsequent numerous references to it via Google, for yourself for their awards, which they having been bestowing upon political activists since 2002. Mention of the wards might arguably belong only on the MRC article, but some mention of Barbra's politcal activism definitely belongs in her article. — Loadmaster 23:37, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Okay. Add it back in but add the references, too. It was completely unreferenced and that's why I removed it (the vandalism was a more recent edit by another editor). --ElKevbo 23:54, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- The Drudge Report is described in this article as a "conservative" outlet, but according to the Drudge article, research shows it leans left, and is more libertarian than most. Bytebear 08:08, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
Why should Drudge be allowed to define his own politics separately from his documented actions, any more than any other politician? Or, to be more specific, until Bush, libertarian WAS conservative, and in most ways it still is. They make a show of supporting INDIVIDUAL freedom, but most "liberal" or "progressive" politics are about organization, not individualism. Similarly, "left" in America has been defined by the right for the last couple of decades. Is Drudge "left-leaning" according to INTERNATIONAL standards (i.e. socialist)?Bren Flibig (talk) 20:51, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
This section puts too much emphasis on her bad grammar. Only the first sentence provides any information about her political involvement. The rest of the section serves only to ridicule her by citing little known groups. Jackaranga 04:38, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
I agree totally with Jackaranga's comment, although some of the groups aren't little-known. As it stands, the section is totally unbalanced, with more time devoted to relatively trivial attacks than to Streisand's own views. I have tried to tone down the attack part frequently, but someone(s) keeps inserting them. As a relatively new Wikipedian, I am up for discussion on this as to how to proceed. Germany
The reasons given for Streisand's not performing in Germany before 2007 are based on mere speculation. As long as Streisand herself (or a reliable source quoting Streisand) does not confirm these rumours, they have no place in a serious Wikipedia article. Streisand has never performed in Continental Europe before (INCLUDING Germany)...until the summer of 2007. Therefore, I have removed this unproven statement from this article.
- But wasn't the German stuff sourced to a reliable newspaper? And are you sure that she hasn't performed in continental Europe before? Is that sourced? Bellagio99 00:40, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
All newspaper articles were based on speculation.....and poor research. Check Streisand's official website wwww.barbrastreisand.com. This is her first continental tour ever. How could she have avoided Germany when she has never performed ANYWHERE on the continent? Streisand did a promotional tour of Germany for her movie YENTL in 1984, with TV appearances, press conferences and interviews. So much for "boycotting" a country! Nellov5 11:19, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

This article is Garbage
I can not honestly believe this article. I mean this is one of the biggest stars of the 20th Century and this article doesnt even really go into anything about her carreer. It makes her look like some twobit. But anyone who breathed a decade in the 20th Century knows that Barbra Streisand is as big if not bigger in terms of recognition and star power than either Michael Jackson or Madonna. Successful Actor, Director, Producer, Broadway Star, Singer, and lets not forget preformer. She is considered to be or have been among the best in every one of those catigories. I mean as an actress she ranks with Hepburn and Julie Andrews. In the music business she is the best selling Female artist in the United States, ahead of Madonna. Not to mention that she raised Bill Clinton from obscurity, and raised him bucketloads of money to finance his primary campaign. This article is utterly shameful. --134.117.151.251 (talk) 19:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Removed Information
Hi Dalburry, I'm sorry I made the mistake of not mentioning the change of the Barbara Striesand page before doing so, my intention was to not start any controversy at all. However the portion that I deleted was pov and had nothing to do with the source provided. The source provided was from RIAA detailing the top selling artists in America, the statment I removed from the page was this,
"She is widely considered to be the the #1 selling female solo artist in history."
This statement is POV and does n interpret the RIAA information correctly, simply because the RIAA is an American based company and does not track worldwide sales. Barbara might be the best selling musician in the US without any doubt, but in "history"? I doubt that and the source provided does not prove that at all. foreign language
somebody knows how many foreign languages she knows?
Roslyn Kind
Uhhh... correct me if I'm wrong (seriously, do) but it seems kind of ridiculous to me to have the name of Streisand's sister link to a redirect page that brings it right back to this one. I'd destroy the whole loop but I'm unsure whether there's some strange, obscure reason for its existence so for now I'm just going to de-wikify the name. If someone else who knows better than I wants to take further action, more power to you. :) Thanks. -- edi (talk) 17:36, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Here's what I did about the Kind problem. I added two details for her benefit. I said she's a singer. Before it just said performer. Then I said she sang on Saturday Night Live in 1976. That shows people Ms. Kind was still relatively young when she became successful, and it was a long time ago. We don't have room to chart her career during the three decades since. I also made other edits. Look at Edit Summary. The Cocoanut Grove nightclub needed a better identification. The publicity announcement in Nevada said the Grove was in Hollywood, and that's wrong. It was near downtown Los Angeles, which many people know on account of its notoriety as the locale of Bobby Kennedy's assassination. Other edits were putting quote marks outside a period and using Wikipedia links for first references only. Change it back if you want. SophieTucker (talk) 05:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- The current redirect from Roslyn Kind to Barbra Streisand serves no purpose, as far as I can tell. I can find no reference to Roslyn Kind on the Barbara Streisand page. Defeats the purpose of the redirect.
- I see there has been a back-and-forth whether to redirect Roslyn Kind to Barbra Streisand or keep her as her own article. Someone made a statement that they saw no evidence that Roslyn Kind merited her own page. I disagree. I have known about Roslyn Kind since the 1970s. Mrs. Peel (talk) 04:23, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
i cannot believe it. come on. roslyn kind is a well known performer since the 70s. there is absolutely no reason why she shouldn't appear here. i never found another article on wikipedia where i was redirected to a family member who is more famous ore anything like that. it is sad and disappointing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.171.13.110 (talk) 00:14, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I went looking for info on Roslyn Kind. The redirect made me think Kind and Streisand are the same person. I learned from IMDb that they are sisters. I think Roslyn should have her own article or at least be mentioned in this one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Freshmutt (talk • contribs) 15:42, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Early Years
I was reading this sentence: "Topics covered in her interviews with host Johnny Carson included the empire-waisted dresses that she bought wholesale, to her “crazy” reputation at Erasmus Hall High School, soon enough she got engaged. [18]" This last bit does not make any sense. It's either a fragment of a deleted sentence or an edit by someone with poor grammar skills. I'm hesitant to delete it because I don't know what they're referring to. If you wrote it, please clean up the grammar so it makes sense. Resinguy (talk) 01:57, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
I was reading parts of her early life and doesn't say how Streisand was introduced to music and at what age. All it says is that she won a music contest than start performing in clubs as a teen. This article doesn't talk about her upbringing unlike other biography articles such as Bobby Fischer. More than just a few lines would help boost the article. The Bobby Fischer article is good in the sense that it is not a summary, a poor one at that, of his childhood. Major additions and changes shouuld take place within that section. Mr. C.C. If it were possible to locate appropriate WP:RS references, more of her early career in 1961 would be nice to include. In April she was in a review at the Crystal Palace in St. Louis, Missouri, whose cast included the Smothers Brothers. When she was released from her contract in Winnipeg in July, she came down to St. Louis to Crystal Palace where she replaced Tom O'Horgan as opener for Prof. Irwin Corey. Interestingly, the new bio Hello, Gorgeous! erroneously indicates that she sang the full two weeks in Winnipeg. Years ago I read a magazine article that I cannot find now which mentioned her summer 1961 gig at Crystal Palace after which she went back to New York where she auditioned for "I Can Get It for You Wholesale", and the rest is history. The Crystal Palace owners, Jay and Fran Landesman, are deceased and one of their sons Rocco Landesman, who is chairman of National Endowment for the Arts, might have records to document Barbra's Crystal Palace gigs. Sheldon paid for the kinescope of the Tonight show Barbra did with Orson Bean. He paid for it in 1961 when she was broke and she needed to use film of herself to pitch herself to show business producers and agents. Does anyone think we should say that the kinescope still exists now that people want to mention Sheldon's contribution to the launch of her career? We mention that Orson found her in a gay bar. Adding Pittsburgh to list of PM East/PM West cities
Pittsburgh was where Westinghouse Broadcasting dubbed its old-fashioned videotapes at the KDKA television station. Everyone knows the entire Westinghouse company -- televisions, washing machines and all -- was headquartered in Pittsburgh all those years in 1950s, 1960s, 1970s ... so I'm going to slip Pittsburgh in to the list of cities. Off the top of my head I know the Pittsburgh Post Gazette television page of Wednesday, November 15, 1961 ran an entire column about what was scheduled for PM East/PM West that night. The television columnist had watched the videotape in advance. Barbra wasn't on that night, but it was the very same television program with the same host: Mike Wallace. This is a legitimate source. So unless someone removes "Pittsburgh" from the list of cities that carried the program via Westinghouse, it should stay in that portion of the article. Thank you. Awards
I'm confused on the numbers mentioned in the Awards section for Grammys. It claims she's been nominated 56 times and won 15, but I only count 44 Grammy nominations and 10 actually won in the itemized list. There are also 3 inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame, but that still doesn't add up to 15. Why did she change her name?
It is unbelievable that this isn't in the article.
I asked on the reference desk just so I wouldn't have to go to strange web aites at home, though I could have waited and done it myself. Then I never would have done it.
Here are the answers I got:
- "she dropped one letter from the conventional spelling of "Barbara" because, "I hated the name, but I refused to change it."[2].
- "the spelling of her first name is an instance of partial rebellion: she was advised to change her last name and retaliated by dropping an “a” from the first instead" [3].
- Another answer from her: "Well, I was 18 and I wanted to be unique, but I didn't want to change my name because that was too false. You know, people were saying you could be Joanie Sands, or something like that. [My middle name is Joan.] And I said, 'No, let's see, if I take out the 'a,' it's still 'Barbara,' but it's unique." [4]
I'm sure we can expand on this. I don't feel comfortable making the decision on just where to add it or what to add.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:26, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

More artists who have won Oscars and had number one singles
The introduction states: "Along with Frank Sinatra, Cher, and Shirley Jones, she shares the distinction of being awarded an acting Oscar and also recording a number-one single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart." However, Jamie Foxx has won an acting Oscar (for 'Ray'), and had a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 ('Gold Digger' with Kanye West) - as evidenced by his Wikipedia entry. Bing Crosby also won an Oscar and had number one singles, although these were in the days before the Billboard Hot 100 existed. There may be more, but I just wanted to flag up that this is innacurate (the claim is not sourced). Brianwilsonisgod (talk) 02:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

A photo was removed by User:Hullaballoo Wolfowitz with the rationale that it was a "potentially nonfree image in BLP infobox." However, only a few minutes earlier, they had submitted a deletion request for the photo at Commons. They also submitted another deletion request at about the same time for a different image previously used in the infobox.
Because the same editor submitted those requests followed within minutes with a removal of one of the images from the article, it seems that their deletion was potentially not neutral. I am therefore restoring the image pending the status of the images in question by neutral editors. --Light show (talk) 02:42, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Barbra Streisand's records sale
It's impossible for Barbra Streisand's record sales to be 145 million when her album sales are 145 million. It just doesn't make sense. The record sales are a combination of all records that Barbra Streisand has sold. Singles, Videos, etc...Babsfan24 (talk) 20:25, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Here's an example. Mariah Carey sold around 150 albums but her record sales are 200 million. Madonna's album sales are a little over 200 million but her RECORD sales are 300 million. Reducing Barbra to that number discredits her and her achievements.Babsfan24 (talk) 20:16, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Do you not know the difference in RECORD sales and ALBUM sales. If you were to count Barbra Streisand's albums it would be around 145 million-150 million but records sales would have her at 245 million. Barbra Streisand sold 245 million RECORDS worldwide and 145 million ALBUMS. Each artist has their RECORD sales listed and you have Barbra Streisand's RECORD sales listed as her ALBUM sales which deflates her total amount of record sales.

- The article List of best-selling music artists keeps better track of this stuff. Streisand has sold 97.1 million units worldwide, claiming 145 million units sold, according to musicologist Alfred William Cramer who wrote Musicians and Composers of the 20th Century (2009). On page 1444 he says, "Moreover, with more than 145 million albums sold, she is the highest-ranking female artist in the history of the American recording industry." So there's no reason for us to inflate the number to 245 million, as some unreliable publications have chosen to do. Binksternet (talk) 15:30, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Barbra is not a great single seller, see the charts, even in USA, most of her singles were not even Top 10. How can she sold 100 million singles? VHS and DVDs never sold a lot worldwide, even Madonna sold less than 1 million with each of her releases...--88marcus (talk) 22:35, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

It seems as though someone is very biased against Ms. Streisand. It seems like you don't want her to have that many sales, but 145 million is too small a number especially since she sold 140 million albums. Woman In Love sold 10-11 million copies itself, and No More Tears was the best selling female collaboration until 2010. I constantly see 200 million reported in the media, and it has been reported in talk shows and documentaries. Worldwide, Barbra Streisand was the biggest female star in the world in the 70's and if Donna Summer sold 140 million when she was ONLY popular in the 70's, then that number is wrong for Barbra. It's just illogical for her and Donna to be so close in sales.Reggiemcgee (talk) 00:00, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
In fact it seems like everything Barbra Streisand related on the Wikipedia site is used to discredit her in a sense. Every other musician's page uses sales that align with reports, they don't automatically go the lowest possible number. I've seen many Streisand figures (even with individual albums) from credible sources, but whenever I log onto Wikipedia, I see the lowest possible number. It's like this page in particular is edited by someone who doesn't like Streisand. Barbra Streisand's page is so weird. She's one of, if not the, most successful female entertainers of all time, but her page is very dry and bland for a career of over 50 decades and sales that far outran her peers. Whenever I read Mariah, Madonna's, or Celine Dion's page, it shows an accurate representation of who they are and how much they sold. With Barbra Streisand I have to take everything with a grain of salt because it's like someone doesn't want her to be on that level. I see people try to use logic to justify giving her the lowest possible sales, but the logic seems to be charged by something very biased. Reggiemcgee (talk) 03:21, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
Woman in Love didn't sold 10 millions worldwide, Billboard magazine says 2.5 millions worldwide till December 1981. How can this song sold 10 millions?? You're relying on an article that was posted a year after the single was released for accuracy. Wow, you really are biased. It's like you automatically attempt to either rely on United States sales or from sales posted decades ago. Wikipedia listed four certifications for Woman In Love that totals to 2.5 million, but they have her charting at #1 in 13 countries. It's like logic only applies to you when you have to disadvantage Ms. Streisand. This Barbra Streisand page is full of inaccuracies, if I didn't know her I would be so confused. How is Barbra Streisand's best selling single Woman In Love and it sold 2.5 million WORLDWIDE but No More Tears sold 3.0 million in the UNITED STATES alone? Reggiemcgee (talk) 20:52, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
88marcus,how dare you said that Barbra is not a big seller outside the USA? She has 6 #1 album in UK including the best-selling album of 1982 (Memories), (most b female before Madonna, the number cher's puls donna's plus Diana's puls Aretha's) and even only count duet, Barbra feature three times with different partners in The UK's 50 Best selling Duets of All Time (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x311j) , they combine sold over 2 million without sales of her solo singes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x311j). Woman in love and Tell him also sold over 1.5 million and 0.4 million in France, her cer in Australia is top3 in female artist, Barbra is not doubt the best-selling female artist in world and in Europe, Australia before Madonna. Woman Barbra charted better than cher, tina, diana in the 70's and 80's , Donna charts well only 4 years(1977-1980), her albums charted much better than them, Cher and Tina did vere well in the 80's. I f they they sold 100 millions record with less than half successful chart performences as Barbra, it's no way Barbra sold less than 200 million. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skkywill (talk • contribs) 08:19, 5 June 2015 (UTC)
Reliable sources
Since the above discussion is mostly based on synth, and there's an edit war going on, can someone clear up a few issues?
- Why is the 245 figure given by the Washington Post, Katie Kouric, and the Hollywood Reporter being deleted?
- Why is the RIAA given as a source for 145, when it doesn't mention 145 (per source}? Nor are those figures mentioned in their brief bio.
- If the RIAA does mention 145 somewhere, shouldn't both figures be stated as sourced for clarity?--Light show (talk) 17:26, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
The RIAA mentions Barbra Streisand as the best selling female artist in America, however they only mention United States album sales. The Worldwide RECORD sales for Barbra Streisand, that they keep trying to justify as 145 million simply doesn't make sense. 145 million is around the amount of albums she sold, not total records. The Barbra Streisand wiki page is the only page that lists an artists total album sales as their total record sales and that's a major discredit to Ms. Streisand. Talk shows and documentaries use 200+ records, not 145 million records. 74.202.193.44 (talk) 20:44, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

The word "select"
A colleague has apparently never thot about the word "select" long enuf to realize that while fine to sling around in resumes and pop bios, and at award ceremonies, it actually has a meaning in an encyclopedic article, and that meaning goes beyond "small". It has to do with "selecting", not in the manner used by the Selective Service System, but by thoughtful evaluation. To describe that group as "select" on WP one would in practice have to find a reliable source for each of the four mutually independent awarding organizations, stating that it makes no award (at least to an entertainer)
- without checking which of the other three awards the candidate has already received, and
- when appropriate labels the ballot in big letters saying
- "This candidate has previously won [all of the other three awards], so
- you may not vote for them after considering only whether they meet the normal criteria for [our award];
- you first must also consider whether
- awarding them [ours] would unduly cheapen the honor, to future entertainers, that is entailed in having won all four."
- "This candidate has previously won [all of the other three awards], so
If all four orgs have maintained that discipline since the inception of the youngest of the 4, then those entertainers in the intersection of their four respective sets of winners are "select", by having been explicitly more stringently evaluated than those who have won only three.
Pending refs for that, the article remains vague (despite my replacing the word "select") by not saying how "small" the group is. But it is no longer recklessly unfounded, nor almost certainly false.

Encyclopedic relevance of noting an early "crush"
Some early life friendship commentary was deleted without a valid reason. It had a RS. The deleter wrote that because "it didn't lead to anything serious between them," it's not worth including. I disagree. She was 16 and recalled her "crush" during an interview. It was obviously "serious" to her as they were having a steady adolescent relationship. Maybe if her crush was not of someone as notable as Bobby Fischer, it might be trivial. I will restore it pending other opinions. We shouldn't trim down early life friendships or relationships just because they didn't "go all the way".
When she was 16 she had a "crush" on chess champion Bobby Fischer, who was then 15, recalling, "I would have lunch with him every day . . . He was an absolute nut, an eccentric at 15," although she thought he was a "genius." (Playboy interview, 1977)

Actual encyclopedic value appears to be nil, I fear. Collect (talk) 21:32, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Collect is spot on. Per WP:NOTDIARY, not everything that goes on in a person's life is worth noting. My stance would remain the same regardless of whether or not this was about someone like Bobby Fischer. If on the other hand they had something prominent together, I'd say differently. - Their friendship has also been cited in her bio by Christopher Andersen. In any case, when the world's youngest chess champion and famous loner gives up this to have his lunches with young Barbra, it's certainly worth a few lines in this 11,000-word bio. It adds some interesting personal life details, which is lacking in far too many bios.--Light show (talk) 03:07, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
- You honestly are trying too hard to justify keeping trivia. Again, please see WP:NOTDIARY, which states Even when an individual is notable, not all events they are involved in are. For example, news reporting about celebrities and sports figures can be very frequent and cover a lot of trivia, but using all these sources would lead to over-detailed articles that look like a diary. WP:ITSINTERESTING also isn't by itself a very strong reason to keep something in an article. Snuggums (talk / edits) 03:41, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

The Last of the Great Belters
If my memory serves me correctly, on the Judy Garland Show it was Ethel Merman who made the comment ... not Judy Garland herself. I could be mistaken, but if someone has access to a recording of the show, will they confirm this? Tesseract501 (talk) 07:22, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- Since my post, directly above, I obtained a copy of the 1963, Episode 5, of The Judy Garland Show. During a talk between Judy and Barbra, about 40 minutes into the show and after a few numbers, Ethel Merman appeared from a seat in the audience, singing. According to the dialog, it was a surprise visit, and Ethel only appeared for this few-minute segment. Ethel joined them up on stage, saying she was across the hall taping a part on the Red Skelton Show. Judy mentioned that she assumed Ethel was belting on Red's show. Ethel replied that she came over because she heard Judy and Barbra belting. Ethel said Barbra was the new belter. After their apparently impromptu dialogue, these three belted out the song There's No Business Like Show Business, together. Tesseract501 (talk) 05:46, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Howdy folks. As of today's date, the article still references Judy saying Barbra was one of the last great belters. If an editor is still monitoring this, when you have the time, please correct the article according to what I wrote directly above (if my ramblings are too confusing, I can clarify). If you need to verify it first-hand, come on over for Old-Movie Night at my place and I'll run the 1963 episode (and make popcorn too). Cheers! Tesseract501 (talk) 02:56, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Misleading lead
In "having released 53 gold albums, 31 platinum albums, and 14 multi-platinum albums in the United States" A multiplatinum album is also being counted as a platinum album and gold album (its previous certifications). It shouldn't be like that, it seems she has released 98 albums. Cornerstonepicker (talk) 18:50, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
Record sales
Hello, I'm comeback because in the past, there were a edit war about her records/albums sales of 145 or 245 million. In my position, I tried to demostrates as other users (like @88marcus: or @Binksternet:), that the figure of 245 is "wrong". @Light show: posted a message on my talk about my position. At those time, I haven't any time on my real life. Now, I have a little more so I think that I can open this new discuss.
Most of the sources that gives 245 figures are from 2014 to present. Everybody can access to the history on the article and in this 2 November 2014 version We can see that the figures on the article are 245, but the references says 145. Those figures happens in the collective-references when she releases her album Partners. IPS since then puts the records and later wasn't never revert and for the media was taken generally that Barbra sold 245 million records. So, I think strongly that these figures are primary sources. So, it doesn't matter if reliables sources now provides that she sold 245, maybe could be Forbes that provices this information or the same artist, but with the "Wiki-magic" almost every sources copy from Wikipedia, more in the record sales (see a classic example from Michael's Jackson hoaxes). Most of the classic or new artist increases their sales promotional, are few that never do this like Madonna (she released two albums between 2012 and 2016 and her record sales are always clean: 300).
Additional, with the List of best-selling music artists We can see that her certified units are like 97.1 millions. Those figures coverages her figures and all her music major markets, including obviously United States.
My two cents: keep both figures (as the Poland IP posted before), because We are not judges of the information, especially when reliable sources are treated. And this is not WP:SYN or other policy. . Regards, Chrishonduras (talk) 21:17, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
Barbra Streisand's record sales have stated 245 million on Wikipedia for over a year now. What's with the sudden change? The media is obviously starting to shift to that number? 2601:C1:C001:BF2D:595A:E9F5:36C7:858 (talk) 18:16, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
- It's the Woozle effect, with one wrong statement being parroted by others. The best sources give a lower number, for instance 145 million from the UK Telegraph. Binksternet (talk) 06:45, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
Woozle effect in sales jumping from 145 to 240 million
To recap previous arguments, the sources published prior to December 2013 reported sales in range of 100 to 150 million. On December 16, 2013, an IP editor from Louisiana changed 145 million to 240 million. This change was reverted on December 25, 2013.[5] The same Louisiana IP returned on January 18, 2014, and changed it back to 240 million.[6] Five weeks later, an editor restored 145 million.[7] In June 2014, an IP editor from Atlanta changed the sales figure to 245 million,[8] and did it again two months later[9] when this was corrected by an editor.[10] This last change stayed in place for many months until mid-January 2015.[11] Note that none of the references in that time supported 240 or 245 million—they were all lower by at least 100 million, for instance this June 2013 Telegraph article which says 145 million. A month later our friend using IPs from China arrived to call Streisand a "legend" and to start in earnest the bitter edit war which continues today.[12]
I think we are looking at the Woozle effect in action, where writers have taken their sales figures from this very article, to be parroted back into it later, a violation of WP:CIRCULAR. I think we must not use any sales sources published in 2014 or later, unless the source traces the sales figures in a researched manner, using official charts. Binksternet (talk) 23:00, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- Binksternet, may be worth an email to the NY Times asking how they came up with that figure? --NeilN talk to me 23:26, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
- I'm considering it. Binksternet (talk) 00:11, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- Sorry for stumbling into this - when I notice it was NYTimes, I Just assumed it was an updated figure. I never considered the idea the Times would get caught up in a CIRCULAR problem. If you do contact the TImes, Binksternet, and it does turn out they got it from here, make sure you ask them to issue a correction. Krelnik (talk) 12:16, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- I'm considering it. Binksternet (talk) 00:11, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- On October 16, 2014, Katie Couric reported on Yahoo Global News that Streisand had sold 245 million records: "Duet with son highlight for Streisand: 'I had to sing with him'". The new album Partners had been out for just one month; it was going to be certified Gold a few months later. During September and early October 2014 when Couric was researching her article, this biography gave an unsupported sales figure of 245 million.[13] I'm sure Couric tapped Wikipedia for the figure, as she doesn't show her work in arriving at the number. Note that the very successful Partners album sold about 1.5 million units, not 100 million units! Binksternet (talk) 00:33, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
- The same exact problem can be seen in news stories about Streisand hosting The Tonight Show, for instance The Hollywood Reporter from September 15, 2014, and The Washington Post from September 16, 2014. On those dates our biography here had that unsupported 245 million sales figure.[14] It's CIRCULAR or Woozle, not official chart stuff. Binksternet (talk) 00:47, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
(sorry for my english) I think she sold 145 million albums, not records. I believe single sales are in 20–25 millions. All her 60s albums sold at least 1 million copies worldwide, but not much more than that, except for People, My name is Barbra two, each one of them sold 1 million copies only in US, and The Christmas album, that sold 5 million copies in US only, according to RIAA. So, she sold at least 20 million copies only in the 60s. (with 16 albums)
In this reports, they said that each of her albums sold 1 million worldwide:
70s: I think it's fair to consider that her gold usa records (7 albums) sold at least 1 million copies together wit US sales. Four albums sold one million only in US, I assume they sold 1 million copies internationaly too. And the we have her most successful albums 3 sold 2 millions only in USA and their estimates are in 3 milion copies worldwide each. Her second greates hits sold almostt 6 million copies if you consider the certifications in the article page (note that in UK they didn't have the multiplatinum certificate. Barbra and other instruments, Clear day, owl and pussycat not reached even 500 in USA, 1 million worldwide for the three together. A Star is born at least 5 millions (certifications only)... So, we have at least 36 million copies.
80s: Guilty sold at least 9 million copies, Yentl 3,5 millions (see the article), Broadway album at least 7, Emotion, Till I loved you, and One voice 2 millions worldwide, Memories at least 7 million (only including certified) and A collection at least 3 millions. So, we have 36 million copies.
90s: Only considering certifications: Back to broadway 3 million, The concert and Higher ground 4 millions each. a love like ours 2 millions. Her boxset e The concert highlights sold 500,000 in USA only. at least 14 millions.
00s and 2010s: probably 14 millions, considering certifications only and estimates I made myself...
So we have 120 million albums, since a lot of countries didn't have certifications organizations, and even weekly charts, in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s I think add more 20–25 millions to this seems reasonable. Some places like the UK, where she's very successful, only had multi platinum certifications in the 90s... and so that's it. 145 million albums and 20–25 million singles.--88marcus (talk) 03:11, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

- I still supporting my position that her most accurate figures are 145 million records, not albums (and not 245 million records), even if she has several decades in the industry. Her main market is United States (the biggest music market worldwide, yes) and later, inconsistently: UK, FRA, CAN and AUS. But even, if she had records before the certifications began in some of those or other countries, is not enough like we can say 245 million (145 jumping to 245). She is not a million seller in albums and singles and is not consistent in each decade or market. Im sure that she sold more records that 145 million, but we cannot put that is 245 million because is the next available figures. Is very pushing. So, there is one factor. The other one, is like its look clear that is a hoax originated from Wikipedia with the vandalism, the most importat, I supose. Regards Chrishonduras (talk) 01:16, 20 August 2016 (UTC) (and sorry for my english, I hope that is understandable)
I agree with you. If we put 245 million now, in about five years, the media will place she has sold 345 million copies worldwide. 145 million is the most appropriate for now.--88marcus (talk) 03:45, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
- She had 145 million in sales just before the release of the 2014 Partners album which sold about 1.5 million. Combined with the continuing sales of her previous works, the grand total would be about 147 or 148 million today. Not 245 million. Binksternet (talk) 03:51, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
The original claim of 140 million was also parroted from an unofficial book in the 1990's. Barbra is far ahead of her contemporaries of the time Cher, Dolly Parton, Donna Summer, etc. They're around 100 million in album sales. Barbra was the most successful singles seller of the 90's and one of the biggest album sellers of all time even in international markets. It's always claims that stars pre-70's were domestic sellers (short of the Beatles and Elvis) because certifications didn't exist for them. Barbra sold very well internationally after the 60's according to certifications. 245 million is more reasonable than 145 million. She's been stuck at 140 ish since the 90's which doesn't make sense. She is a lot bigger than Frank Sinatra who's been certified for 37 million but somehow he's been justified as selling 150 million records. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.96.15.81 (talk) 13:40, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
- You are basing this on "an unofficial book"? That gives you no leverage in this discussion. Binksternet (talk) 15:36, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm just saying that the 140 million claim was parroted as well in the 90s and now it has reached Wikipedia. Both figures were parroted. If anything there needs to be range instead of a concrete figure in order to avoid an edit war. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1005:B054:35C4:30E7:7985:209D:3C88 (talk) 16:31, 26 August 2016 (UTC) Once more time people want to underestimate Barbra's sales, her total available certified units: 97.3 million , Cher's is 40.4 million, Tina's is 32.6 million , Olivia Newton-John's is 34.5 million , Donna's is Total available certified units: 30.8 million, and their's wiki pages "has sold 100 million records worldwide"? Barbra's chart performance is bteer than thiers combined,so Barbra is 140 million record? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.162.66.216 (talk) 07:54, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

No South Park?
It's a joke that the "television references" section doesn't include a mention of South Park, who aired an entire episode in "spooky vision" (which just meant there was a picture of Babs in each corner). She was also in another episode as mecha-Streisand, a giant robotic dinosaur who had to be stopped by Robert Smith. Clearly this page has been written by a gushing fanboi who would rather only tell half the story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.91.10.30 (talk) 01:09, 17 November 2016 (UTC)
