Bradley Mill Engine
[edit]The article needs updating with details of the Bradley Mill Engine (ex Skipton) which is now also operational at Bancroft since September 2017. I don't have much in the way of good quality refs with citations at the moment though. --Entablature (talk) 14:06, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Loom quantities
[edit]Maybe I'm reading it wrong but the more looms system section seems to be claiming that 810,000 looms were in use nationally in 1915? If so this number seems far too low to me. There were approximately 100,000 in Burnley alone in 1910 Spinning the Web? --Trappedinburnley (talk) 17:30, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes question every figure. Graham p185 quotes Worralls Directory of the Lancashire Textile Industry as 808796 in 1916 but is not clear if that is National or Lancashire alone. It doesn't seem unreasonable that one eighth of them were in Burnley either way. The combination mills in Manchester had cut back. But add your references and doubts. -- Clem Rutter (talk) 18:26, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
I've not been able to find a useful source but I feel (based on the title of Worralls Directory and a bit of mental arithmetic) that the figures are for (pre 1974) Lancashire. I know we were big in weaving but I find it almost impossible to believe that we had 1/8 of the national stock of looms. --Trappedinburnley (talk) 19:47, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
Title
[edit]Is there a reason why this article is called Bancroft Shed and not by its usual name Bancroft Mill? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.30.84.65 (talk) 15:29, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- The primary written source we have is Stanley Graham- He describes a weaving shed on page 13. and on page 4 he explains how these two practically synonymous terms are used. To quote, ... if it started doing preparation, spinning and weaving it was mill,if it concentrated solely on weaving it was named a shed.... This is the convention I followed. Generically, all were mills. Now that memories of working shed have faded I believe that the usage is changing - but we must follow our sources. Other opinions welcome-- Clem Rutter (talk) 16:31, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- As the preservation soc. calls it Bancroft Mill I think this article should. J3Mrs (talk) 15:53, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
