Restructuring & Improvement

[edit]

I have improved the article by restructering the contents to make it more readable.I have also removed a lot of informal tones and stuck with the NPOV. Also added new contents about Academics, Festivals. There were no references to anything. I have added a few. Please add references in the future. Moved the List of Notable BITS Alumni to a new article. Additions/Changes are welcome in that article.

Also, please add some images(in the right places).

Expand a bit on BITS_GOA & BITS_DUBAI. In future, we can move these to separate articles.

Essay?

[edit]

Please Avoid writing essays like: "OASIS indeed is a once in a lifetime experience that no one even remotely connected with it once, would even dream of missing ever again. In fact the Passion is so much that the OASIS 2006 Alumni edition is scheduled on October 28 this year at New York. For a BITSian, OASIS indeed is much more than an isolated area of vegetation in a desert."

Admission procedure

[edit]

I restructured this content. My comments are as follows, in case someone is interested:

  • Artical was written assuming Indian reader (with significant use of "board", "PCM"), so I tried to make it general and understandable to outsider as well.
  • While old admission procedure is important to note, let current admission procedure take precedence.

Apart from that I just changed sentences/tone a bit to more formal. If someone can normalise the spelling of 'normalise/normalisation' etc., that would be good! Ashish G 01:41, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Lead section is too small. These need to be summarized in the lead section - When was the insti started? Who started? Year? Who runs the college now? What is the distinction of the college? What courses do the college run?
  • Avoid one sentence paras. For eg: the entire "Brief history" section can be clubbed under one para.

and NO there were NO notable teachers before; one should note that it wasn't a very good college; MIT representatives, on seeing the condition of the PHysics department, reportedly said that: "it cannot even be called a BAD physics department".

  • What were the reasons behind the merger of the colleges?

They were integrated into the main institute, to get a more coherent management. (i.e don't have duplicated administrative staff). Re-ordering

[edit]

I suggest that the order of points should be like 1. Lead Paragraph 2. History 3. Organizational Structure/Administration 4. Campus Details 5. Academics (Which should include Distance Learning Programme) 6. Reputations and Rankings 7. Student Life 8. Alumni 9. Dubai Campus 10.Goa Campus 11.Hyderabad Campus For the last three points, only brief description should be present on the main page and rest details should go on the respective pages. If these changes are brought, it will be good for the article -Bestharshu 10:14, 6 June 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bestharshu (talkcontribs)

The result of the move request was: not moved. Although looking at the webpage linked, I noticed it gave the copyright to "BITS Pilani". That may be a viable common name for a technical request? -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:20, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page Moving

[edit]
  • I would suggest moving the page from Birla Institute of Technology and Science to Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
  • Looking at the logo of the institute and the website, the correct usage includes the word 'Pilani'.
  • Also, I noticed the official website gives the copyright to "BITS Pilani". But keeping in mind the practice to expand abbreviations, avoiding the ampersand and expanding 'BITS' may be a good decision. However, omitting the word 'Pilani' from the official name does not seem correct.

BITS Pilani was effectively founded by GD Birla, and continues to be headed by his descendants (Kumar Mangalam Birla currently). They run several other Birla institutions. Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:BITS Pilani/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Too many digressions because of multiple campuses & fests. Would be better if a category called 'BITS' be created and existing content rearranged

Restructuring

[edit]

I have significantly restructured the article.

  1. Information on other campuses is now available from their wiki entries. I think think this will encourage more contribution to those articles.
  2. Layout has been made more aesthetic
  3. Please add more sections. When i get time, i will add section on practice school, the college's history etc, but either i write a great article or dont write one at all, so if anybody wants to contribute, PLEASE DO SO!

Consider renaming article

A rename should be considered from the article from the present name to Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani - Pilani Campus, inline with the name of the other campuses. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abhijeetviswa (talkcontribs) 15:27, 1 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edits on admission

[edit]

To start, thanks for at least mentioning a source for the edits, that's helpful. Edits on Wikipedia need reliable sources so readers can review them to verify that what's in our articles isn't just made up by editors, but based on good sources. The source mentioned, [1] I'm not 100% sure about - I think it's a student paper and I need to double-check on that. The most recent edits [2] are still problematic though. First, it's removing information sourced to a really good source. That probably should stay. Second, it appears to be a complete copy-paste from the source, and that's not good. You need to completely rewrite and summarize the material from the source. As written, it's in Wikipedia's voice, and that's another problem. Some of what's there is attributed in the source to a random student, that probably needs to be cut out. I'm going to revert again, please discuss here rather than make edits on the main article. Ravensfire (talk) 20:46, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering if this can be added as a sentence after what's already in the article about pre 2005 admissions. The gist of what's in the sandpaper source is that language makes a difference. Ravensfire (talk) 20:53, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

BITS-Pilani is not private- correct it. See UGC list of private universities and deemed universities.

[edit]

BITS Pilani is a not a private university. It is a deemed university and it gets government plan grant. Though, it is not funded by MHRD like IITs.
