Clarity
[edit]Hi, Could greater clarity be added to the article so that a reader can differentiate from BBC Manchester and BBC North West? I currently understand it as BBC Manchester is the Network Production Centre making programmes for network, while BBC North West is the regional division making news and local programming. Is this correct, and could it be made clear? Rafmarham (talk) 11:12, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
February 2012 Concerns
[edit]I have just added the 'out of date' and 'confusing' tags to the article for the following reasons:
- Firstly, following the move to MediaCityUK and the subsequent ceasation of all operations at New Broadcasting House, this article is very out of date. All departments have moved from NBH to MC and this change needs to be reflected.
- Secondly, there is alot of confusion between 'BBC Manchester' and BBC North West and this will only increase as all the departments from London complete the move. As I understand it BBC Manchester is the Network Production Unit in charge of network programmes whereas BBC North West is the regional TV and radio programming body, answerable to the BBC English Regions production unit and not BBC Manchester.
- As a result of all the above points, the page may need to be relocated to 'BBC Salford' for example
- Picture needs to be changed to MediaCity, there should be some free pictures on flikr.
Hope this improves this page which is desperately needed. Rafmarham (talk) 22:55, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
- It is probably out of date, I haven't updated it for months now. BBC Manchester produces certain programmes like Question of Sport, Dragons Den etc, it is a production unit. BBC North West was based with BBC Manchester at NBH until recently of course, they're not the same though. And renaming it BBC Salford, to me it would seem absurd, as it would make 90% of the page would become redundant as its history has little relevance to Salford. I'd rather a BBC Salford page is created and BBC Manchester is changed to the past. Stevo1000 (talk) 06:02, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've linked BBC Productions Salford to this page. On the BBC careers page, there is a lot of the "Manchester/Salford?" mantra and the BBC don't really seem to have to have a preference for either. The BBC actually says: "With our new offices in Salford Quays, Manchester is fast becoming one of the BBC's busiest and most vibrant centres of production." - I'd concur this page needs quite a lot of work. It is very confusing regarding if it is about BBC "activities" in Manchester or the "BBC Manchester" site. 'Salford' is a city in it's own right. However it is in the administrative county of "Greater Manchester". (Let's not add confusion with the fact that parts of what people may call "Media City" are in fact in Trafford, not Salford or Manchester!). There is value in the details about past BBC activities in the City of Manchester. I'm not sure if adding 'Greater Manchester' to references to 'Media City' is helpful or just pedantic. I'm unsure if renaming to 'BBC Salford' is right - unless the 'historic' information stays under a "BBC Manchester" article, with newer information in a "BBC Salford" article. The BBC themselves don't help to clarify things with interchangeable Salford / Manchester references. Unfortunately I've limited time myself to offer to do any re-write of this article. Perhaps if no other editor has the opportunity to do revise this article in the meantime I will revisit in a few months time.
