Spelling
Why is it spelled here "axolotl"? I have just finished reading the original six books which I believe spells it "axlotl". --WilCooley 17:11, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
- Nope. My 1984, 49th printing copy of Dune Messiah, in the early chapter dealing with the conspiracy (which is, I believe, the first mention of axolotl tanks), the spelling is most definitely with an 'o'. --maru (talk) contribs 18:54, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
The "o" spelling only occurs in the 1984 edition I have read, all others eliminate the "o". Also, the "best results" were NOT obtained from a Bene Gesserit as a tank--those results were disastrous! -Tleilax Master B
Honored Matres
From Hunters of Dune: The origin of the Honored Matres lies partially in axlotl tanks which were rescued and restored from the alterations by wild reverend mothers and Fish Speakers during the Scattering. Their rather vicious and thorough annihilation of the Tleilaxu is tied to this origin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.253.237.174 (talk • contribs) 13:51, September 15, 2006.
- Have a quote or two to back that up? Its made pretty clear in the original canon that the Tleilaxu were annihilated because they shared the secrets of sexual enslavement and programmed the Duncan ghola with this ability, which eventually turned that around on them. That information was obtained by capturing their no-ship and having NFDs make imprints of HMs with all of their secrets. Tleilax Master B 18:15, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

- The IP user is alluding to the Honored Matre origin established in Hunters; according to this new book, the Matres are a combination of Bene Gesserit, Fish Speakers and Tleilaxu women, freed from their roles as axolotl tanks. Though the Matres don't necessarily remember their Tleilaxu origins, they have a longstanding hatred for the Tleilaxu because of it. Of course, the actual mass destruction was indeed initiated because the BT pissed off the Matres, LOL. TAnthony 20:22, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Move
Since it has already been established that axlotl is the correct spelling, shouldn't this article be moved (with a redirect)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Michael riber jorgensen (talk • contribs) 11:27, April 24, 2007.
- It should, however it has occurred to me that this stub could easily be merged back into the Bene Tleilax article. Do we think there will be that much more to add to merit a separate article? TAnthony 19:40, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Spelling
For the record (and as I've noted in a footnote in the article), the word was spelled "axolotl" twice in Dune Messiah, and then 47 times as "axlotl" in three of the next books (7 in God Emperor of Dune, 23 in Heretics of Dune, 17 in Chapterhouse Dune according to SandChigger's calculations.) I've searched my own text files and found that the "axolotl" spelling only appears in Messiah. Anyone suggesting that Frank Herbert intended it to be spelled "axolotl" needs a reliable source for that info before changing it here or in any other article. It seems logical that any "editor error" occurred in Messiah. — TAnthonyTalk 01:47, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
- Incidentally, 'axolotl' also seems to be Touponce's preferred spelling. --Gwern (contribs) 15:52 14 October 2007 (GMT)
